History

The Nike Zoom KD 3 was designed by Leo Chang. (Chang was responsible for the previous two Kevin Durant signature models and would go on to create the next 4 models for Kevin Durant)

The shoe was Kevin Durant's first low cut signature sneaker. It features Nike's low-profile Zoom cushioning in the forefoot, which can be seen on the bottom of the sneaker. The upper is made up of Nike's lightweight and sturdy flywire technology, which is exposed at the outer forefoot. The outer part of the upper contains a large Nike swoosh engraved in mesh material (other models have a patent leather material). There is a strap near the arch used for additional arch support. The heel tab is mesh. The tongue is made up of mostly mesh until the very top where it is made of leather. It features Kevin Durant's "kd" logo with a hole inside the "d" used to help pull the tongue, similar to the holes on the Nike Air Jordan VI.

Many intricate details can be found on the sneaker that represent aspects of Durant's life. His hometown "Seat Pleasant" is inscribed on the midsole. There are keys of a piano inscribed on the sole, showing Durant's love for music. On the heel, "videogame controller buttons" are found with the letters K and D; plus numbers 3 and 5, which represent Durant's love for videogames. Near the toe you can find 3 stars on the midsole, plus a heart logo underneath it. When you pull out the strap for the arch support, you can find a message stating "Designed and engineered to the exact specifications of Kevin Durant."

One of Durant's main requests is for his sneakers to be "affordable." The shoe retailed for $88, which was a lot cheaper compared to his fellow Nike athletes' sneakers at that time (Kobe's signature went for $130, LeBron for $160).

The KD3 was also featured for the first time on Nike ID, where customers were free to create their own colorways, like the "Creamsicle" colorway  (All-orange, blue swoosh), which wasn't released for the KD 3 model.

There were many colorways released for the KD 3. There were the usual home and away colorways featuring the Oklahoma City Thunder's colors. There were "team based" colorways that covered a wide spectrum of colors for basketball players to choose from. There was a special colorway in a maroon, yellow, white, and gum sole; which was inspired by Kevin Durant's hometown/favorite NFL team: Washington ********. This pair was made famous by Kevin Durant's infamous appearance at the legendary Rucker Park, where he hit a string of 3 point shots to put a premature end to the game.

The Christmas pair featured an all yellow reflective upper and blue swoosh. There were the special edition colorways celebrating Durant's All-Star appearance and scoring title. The All-Star pair boasted an all red upper with white and black accents. The scoring title pair was an entirely new, stripped down version of the KD 3. There was no more exposed flywire or mesh seen on the upper. The pair had a clear sole. Two versions of the scoring title exists. One was a publicly released white model with an orange swoosh with a blue design which contained small references significant to Kevin Durant's career and life (Similar to the Nike Zoom Kobe IV finals pair which had Kobe's statistics scattered throughout the shoe). This version was released in a special clear case and shoebox. The other was an unreleased black pair with a yellow swoosh.

Advertising for the Nike KD 3 was an Internet viral campaign featuring homemade Youtube videos from a teenager named Mathias Murphy, a Kevin Durant super fan who was jubilant to find his hero had moved just next door to him. Most of the videos were of Mathias' awkward and creepy interactions with his new neighbor/hero, Kevin Durant. Some of the videos were astonishingly creepy, as Mathias would secretly record every thing Kevin Durant would do around his house. The Youtube channel, appropriately named "kd35sneighbor," weren't officially linked to Nike, confusing viewers to thinking that the obsessed, stalker Mathias character actually existed. The whereabouts of Mathias are currently unknown, and the Youtube videos no longer exist.

Nice review. Only thing I will correct is the fact that Nike KD 3 only has 1 Zoom Air unit. That Zoom Unit is placed in the forefoot.

Check out my review on them. I go into complete detail.
