This is what I thought but I'm sure that theres some code of conduct that I'm not aware of for people to be getting this up in arms about it its just how it has always been since centuries ago. The captain goes down with the ship, or at least until every1 is safe and accounted for. Back then it used to be about honor and pride. But also these captains get paid big money, so it's basically their jobs to not abandon before every1 else.

You all act like you would do this and that, but at the end of the day, I don't know anybody with something to live for that's not going to do everything in their power to live. As the captain of the ship, it was his responsibility to get as many people as he could off the ship. It's not like his life was in jeopardy either; like others have mentioned, there were people waiting on the ship for HOURS after he abandoned the ship. True it was his fault but I dont think he could did much as far as saving them all...or many. And yea some ppl were trapped in parts of the ship... but again wasnt much he could do. Some were said to be near rafts but was scared because of the waters being shark infested. Some were said to be near help but wasnt getting off ship because they couldnt swim. Not much he could do for the scared and afraid to swim to safety... not much could be done for those who couldnt swim. So i guess he said cant save em all, cant save half, maybe can save few but doing so means death... So he opted for live.
