Child support totaling almost $45,000 is no easy task to manage. DMB, I've heard the Mark Brunell story and it's sad as much as surprising. There are numerous reasons for so many pro athletes ending up broke, starting primarily with mismanagement of long-term finances. Some other reasons under that umbrella is overspending, exploitation from their inner circle (agents, PR, etc.), leeching entourages (Mike Vick), fathering children out of wedlock (child support payments), and bad investments (Amar'e and his real estate ventures). Honestly there should be stronger efforts to help current players with financial knowledge and sound planning for the future. Courses should be provided, even for upcoming high school athletes who will soon be experiencing vast wealth quickly. I think partly the root of the problem is that no one truly cares about the athletes, like in T.O.'s case. Owners, PR firms, agents, etc. are largely only in it to enhance their reputation and bank accounts. I can't name that many individuals who actually consider the long-term well-being of their clients. Dude if average guys on the street who bag multiple females can avoid getting them pregnant he can to. Come on those "jersey chasers" didn't get themselves pregnant. I would understand one pregnancy but 4? Come on that's on him. It's no accident that guys like Sanchez, Jeter, A-Rod, etc. haven't ended up with multiple children. They were bagging while bagging all those women. Hell even Tiger with all his skanks didn't get any of them pregnant. The bad investments I can understand because people took advantage of him but the pregnancies sorry that's all on him.

Kemp has 7 kids by 6 different women. Darren McFadden is another high-profile athlete who had fathered at least 4 children with 4 different women, as of 2008. I think we do. Beyond what is probably normal Look, these dudes at some point have to learn from history. I'm just talking in general here because for all I know maybe T.O. wanted to have four kids and he spends all his waking hours being there for them...I don't know. But how many times are we going to read from the same script? You feel bad for some of these athletes because each is an isolated case and who are we to judge what they have done because we've never been a target. But these guys DO have seminars to teach them what to expect, they do have teams providing personnel to help them with things, and they do have eyes and ears and brains to learn hey this kind of stuff has been going on now for decades. Who is out fault here? I don't know. We don't have to know. We just know that this story comes up constantly. The kids out of wedlock thing has always been fascinating to me because of the amount of pro athletes that seem to have them and how many times we read "Player X also has five kids living in five different states." We read about it almost daily/weekly in all sports. And why does it come up where we read about it? Because the players are in court because of them, or getting bent over on payments because of them. Ten years from now this isn't going to change, twenty years from now this isn't going to change. The only real way a change could happen collectively is if teams starting giving them their money on smaller payment plans (NFLPA would sue) or deferring a large sums of money for later (NFLPA would sue) or teams having a hand in players' choices for agents and handlers (NFLPA would sue). The players and players' handlers will not stand to be told what to do with their money. So as it stands now you have what you have. Young dudes who came from nothing getting mega-paid and wanting it all......and spending it all or giving it away.....and trusting sleezeball adults in suits. And then something happens (or multiple things happen) and we ask "how did this happen" and, again, the cycle continues. Long rant.....but agreed, this is why T.O. isn't unique at all. SneakerHeathen in particular didn't seem to know or recognize the other common cases with the very specific athletes I listed. Second, I never said the public/media hasn't vilified Henry, Cromartie, etc. so I have no idea where you got that premise from. Let me reiterate so you don't have trouble grasping the context this time, my comments about vilification were directed at two specific members on this board. Lastly, I'm almost certain I'm more in-touch with the sports business world than you. Ry, good post. My point wasn't that seminars and counseling weren't available to the players, my belief is that they aren't being pushed or stressed enough due to the fact owners, agents, etc. are primarily concerned with their own agendas and not the long-term well-being of the players they represent and profit from. The agents basically don't. It has to be a guy like Dungy or (pick former players) who say enough is enough and we are starting a program to really educate. And not just educate during a "rookie symposium" that is over in a weekend but rather a yearly thing with follow-ups and other things. The problem though when you are dealing with players is they enter the league at 22 and often aren't listening. I also sincerely doubt the NFLPA is going to want a big brother organization monitoring player activities and intruding in their personal lives. Hell, they won't agree to their players giving any of their personal time to attend events in the offseason. The agents especially are in the back pockets of almost everyone involved in the NFL and media and can control many things that best suits their own interests. I am not vilifying T.O. I am just pointing out the fact that those situations are avoidable. 4, 7, 9, 11 kids? Come on that is just reckless negligence. Use condoms or pull out. That's a weak defense, don't act like you don't know better. I'm finding it hard to believe you even knew the cases of Henry and Cromartie until I brought it up. DaJoka, I suspect your ill sentiment towards T.O. is predicated around his sour departure from Philadelphia. I'm also guessing you're still upset about the dissension Owens allegedly created in the Eagles locker room fighting with Hugh Douglas and publicly calling out Donovan McNabb. It's easy to remember all the negative points but don't you dare forget the inspiring performance he provided in the Super Bowl against New England, on a recently healed broken leg no less. Epox, of course we all take responsibility for our actions and ideally everyone practices safe sex. However, the deeper issue I'm attempting to lead you guys to is the lack of role models many pro athletes suffer from. Many star families come from broken homes, a fact that must be taken into consideration when assessing their actions. Who's figuratively there to stop them from going raw on the numerous, persistent "jersey chasers"? From a younger age, who's there to teach them about sex education and contraceptives? Owners and agents are enablers. In general, they don't care about a player's sexual habits or otherwise as long as the end product is success on the field and ultimately wins. Ry, thank you for your points about the NFLPA, something I hadn't taken into consideration as strongly before you mentioned it. It's a very complicated and subjective matter when determining and discussing "what's best overall for the players." What the players want short-term and what's best for them long-term may differ. I like to save the best for last, Mister Negative, it's not about accomplishments but rather inside access and extensive knowledge unavailable to the casual sports fan. There's elements about the corporate sports structure that are part of my profession that you wouldn't be able to grasp. I am not absolving blame from Owens in the least, all human beings are accountable for their own respective actions. However, you completely fail to recognize or accept that there are mitigating factors in various situations throughout life. Once again, Travis Henry, Antonio Cromartie, Shawn Kemp, and Darren McFadden are inextricably linked to T.O. as star athletes who fathered multiple children out of wedlock with an assortment of different women. I never said the media didn't vilify these particular individuals in the public eye, my use of the term vilification was directed only at two specific members of this board (SneakerHeathen and epox12). The larger point that you're constantly missing in this debate is the very same sentiment RyGuy and I shared a conversation about in the posts above. That point being long-term financial uncertainty and failing to practice safe sex are both epidemic plagues on successful American athletes currently. As many of you have stated, these two issues can and should be prevented with additional guidance and tutelage from gentlemen like Tony Dungy. Counseling and seminars should be mandatory. Some might say, what if the players don't listen? That's their prerogative but the effort should be made regardless. Mister Negative, I find it likely that you're just a normal guy, in which case you will never understand the complex relationship between high profile athletes and "jersey chasers." You will never understand the way women fawn, seduce, and manipulate star players and extremely successful businessmen (celebrities as a whole) alike.
