The College Basketball Post

UNC, UK, KU, Duke, UCLA, Zona. Give me winning there over IU. :D

Is IU even the best program to win at in the B10 anymore? OSU better too, no?

UCLA fanbase is meh, expectations exceed the reality of the program. Zona is a great job but not nearly the legacy of the other programs. And OSU is a football school so no.

IU was decent last year and they were literally everywhere on TV, media and press, win there and your a god especially considering how far the program has fallen.

What's the reality of UCLA's program? No bashing, genuinely interested to hear what other people think the program should expect to have.

They are a full generation removed from being on top of college basketball and they are on the west coast.

I figured the west coast thing was bias people carried without knowing they had. Don't know how I feel about the first bit. You mean from having won the whole thing?

Team was in a natty game, multiple FFs in the past 10 years. If UCLA's reality doesn't match the perception, then what is IU?

(pray for us).

UCLA is really insulated on the west coast. The fan base is just the immediate SoCal area these days. So they aren't a national brand like Duke, UK or UNC, which is due to location and media bias for sure.

Honestly UCLA is starting to look more like a football school.

IMO UCLA and Indiana are in somewhat similar situations. One-time big dogs with some historical significance. Occasionally field a competitive team that doesn't seem to be able to finish strong in the NCAA tourney even though they are projected to win. Produces some high draft picks.

The differences are that Indiana has a rabid fan base who are constantly screaming that they are relevant. Because of being around several relevant programs due to LOCATION they are heard by more folks, which makes them seem like they are in the mix.

I feel this is one of the reasons that UK is not going to schedule IU anymore. It's like the rich person who lost everything they had and are still being invited to the big social events. As long as they are still being invited they feel like they belong. Cut them off and they just disappear.

Biggest difference is that UCLA went out and got themselves a real coach who is ultra-competitive and wants to win more than anything. He will flourish by keeping the local talent. Howland's grindy, defensive style is not fun to watch or play, unless that's the only way you know how to play.

You guys are going to be tough over the next few years as long as Alford stays.

tharpe is pure buns

i like what i seen out of Frankamp also Wayne Selden did not live up to what i thought he would be.
Agreed...

IF Selden will work his ***** off during the offseason, he absolutely no questions asked has to come back...if he's not going to work hard this offseason, then go to the NBA and get paid while you can, because his stock will only get worse.

Alford will stay because our dumb AD gave him a stupidly large buyout clause that will stop other schools from trying to poach him, IU included.

UCLA needs a signature win to put itself back into the national picture in a serious way. Beating Florida would do that, but obviously their chances to do so are slim.

Marquette and Wake reached out to Shaka.

got shot down within seconds.

Didn't Shaka reject UCLA? why the hell would he go to Marquette or Wake

he's coaching the Cavs next year. come on down shaka

But he is a coach that will keep you in the mix. IU did the same thing and they screwed themselves...lol.

~~Jerry Meyer ‏@jerrymeyer247 Hearing from multiple sources that Shaka Smart to Marquette is after all very likely to happen and happen soon.

~~Jim Ganzer ‏@theIWB · 24m I am predicting Shaka Smart will be the new coach at Marquette. #mubb

The advantage Pitino has always had is his ability to identify and develop talent. Nobody at a top tier basketball program consistently finds these guys that become impact players.

My secret wish is that Cal can figure this out and get one of these players at least every other year so we always have that glue guy that keeps us right with new guys coming in every year.

I think Cal is starting to do that. I think Hawkings is an example and so is Ulis coming in next season.

Also, I can see Poythress being that guy if he stays next season.

Why would he do that? Who wants to coach in that conference?
Lets him make $$$ before bolting to carolina when Roy hangs it up

No clue why he would take that job after holding out for so long. I mean Buzz just left Marquette for VT and Shaka has a chance to go to the ACC and bring Wake back but he'd choose Marquette? Not understanding the logic behind that

Big East Bike :pimp:

IU will eventually be back cause it is the major program in a basketball crazy state that has money to support the program, its just that a lot of booster's are asshat's.

Horrible idea? You can win anywhere nowadays, its clear looking at the tourney. The gap in talent between elite schools and mid-majors isn't as wide a gulf as it once was. Why go from one mid-major to another? Why not have an easy, no-stress situation where you can still win instead of going into a place where you will be the 5th best program in a conference and have people calling for your heads even after success. Ben Howland went to three back-to-back final 4's and lost his job not too long after.

Plus, Shaka is from Wisconsin and he is returning home. Marquette also has one of the biggest basketball budgets of any program in the country I believe. The conference may be a mid-major but the school definitely does not operate like one.
