The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

First post...

I have a 2008* macbook pro. running on 10.5.8

I can barely install anything/ run any applications

possible for me to update it to the nearest 10.6? also my cd drive is broken -__-

my iphone is also updated on iOS 8 yet not of the 3rd party apps work.

You should be able to, if you know someone with an external disc drive you should be able to use it to do the install OR you can create a bootable USB stick with the disk image.

I forget which version it was, but one (I think Lion or maybe Mountain Lion, the first one that came out via the app store only) was available from the Apple Store on a USB stick. You should be able to install up to those on a 2008, since at the very least they're running Core2Duo if it's a MBP.

Having stupid WiFi issues and it seems to be a known problem, going back to maverick this weekend. WiFi dips in and out and it's annoying as hell.

Trying to hook up my MacBook Pro to my HDTV. Which cable do I need? Wally World didn't have anything.

What year MBP? If it has Display Port you'll need to get an mini-displayport to HDMI out and a TOSLINK to mini TOSLINK cable for the audio.

If it's recent enough to have a Thunderbolt, you just need a Thunderbolt to HDMI and it will carry your video and audio.

Monoprice should be able to fill any of your cable needs.

Yeah you're going to have to go with a dual cable solution to get audio to the tv. Check MonoPrice to get the right cables. They sell some that say they carry audio, but back in 2010, if I'm remembering right the MBP didn't carry audio over the display port.

so messages from my iPhone still pop up when i'm in the app and in a convo. what. the. ****.

i have tried over and over to turn this feature off. it keeps appearing no matter what. why the **** would apple do that? i don't want my convos read by whoever i let use my computer. again, it doesn't matter if you're signed in or not. it pops up and if they click not now on the password screen they bypass signing in and can read convos. the **** outta here.

Airdroid works great for me.

I have a mid 2013 mac air and after the yosemite update, it hasn't been the same smh

Slower scrolling like its glitchy.

Sometimes opening or closing an app takes 2 or 3 seconds longer than it should

watching like a youtube video on NT enlarged and then when its done and i minimize the video, the NT screen is blacked out and i have to refresh the page.

Anyone having these problems?

The only scrolling lag I've experienced is when I use Adobe Reader. Pretty annoying, but everything else has been smooth for me with Yosemite. I have had wi-fi dropped twice though.

Start up and shut down speeds are noticeably faster though.

aye reading mixed reviews on the yosemite upgrade. Some are better after the upgrade some are worse off after the upgrade. Still can't decide if I want to upgrade now or just wait for the first service pack yosemite update.

He's entirely right.
Plug in some speakers, but the video would work fine with any HDMI. Walmart has some belkins for about 10/15 shipped.

Sorry for the 2x post.

Going for an celluar upgrade in January.

I currently have a GS3. I've always loved apple but the 4/4s was just too simple for me. But now the androids are a complete mess. I'm now stuck with the dilemna of getting the 5s or aimming for the 32gb 6.

But we got dudes saying the 6 is so 2012... this is better blah blah blah... those who had the 5s and now the 6, do you say there has been a big jump in any aspect.

and is there a 6S or 6C soon?

There is no 32GB 6. The only options are 6 & 6+ this time. I prefer my 6 to the 5 & 5C that I had.

How do I convert my Windows files to Mac files?

I'm not even sure what you mean here, if you're talking about media files as long as you have the software to open it, it'll work. Actual programs won't for the most part unless you're running parallels or boot camp, or it's something that has been setup to run using wine skin.

If you're trying to get access to stuff that's on an NTFS formatted disk http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ try this although there's other solutions out there, but they involve getting into the terminal and editing settings by hand.

Thank you and yes, specifically Media files. Music and movies. So, my Macbook should open it right up? How about iTunes? How is that suppose to work? I had iTunes for my Windows. How would I put my library on my Mac iTunes?

If you're going to keep using the old computer (I have a tendency of doing this since I've got a LOT of music files) just share the drive with media on your home network and point iTunes to that for the music.

If you want to have stuff locally on your drive, transfer the files either by logging in via your home network or the use the sneaker network and pull stuff off either a USB thumb drive or plugging in an external. If you go the external route you may run into some difficulties since Macs like things formatted in HFS+ and Windows computers tend to use NTFS. You can get drivers to work in either direction, but (and it's been about 8 years since the last time I had to do this, so it may have gotten a lot easier) it's a bigger pain than just logging in via SMB and transferring stuff over the home network.

Sometimes my chrome freezes on yosemite and have to wait a minute to work. Also after upgrading, my wifi would drop, but hasn't been doing that lately so might be my router.

Went back to maverick over the weekend. Had WiFi issues with Yosemite. I like the look of Yosemite better though.
