The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

have you guys seen a difference in battery life since upgrading?  seems like my battery life don't last as long since upgrading

MacBook pro (2011) was using the computer, then just froze, wouldn't do nothing...so I held the power button down to shut down...

When I turned it back on, nothing happened and a folder with a ? Would just flash on the screen and then just shut down after a while

WTF HAPPENED MAN!!!!!

^ I have a early 2011 model and i have a similar problem... usually when i watch a video it crashes or sometimes when i put it in sleep mode i cant turn it back on... what happens is i got a grey screen after i login with my password and cant get passed that... if i restart for 30-40 minutes it works again but its been happening a lot so i think its messed up... i chatted with apple care and they said i might need a new harddrive... i might just take it to apple care and see if they can fix it... bad timing since im trying to cop the infrareds on friday :smh:

The ? sounds like your drive is going bad.

Problems with it crashing when you watch a video is a bigger problem, you may be experiencing the first incidences of your GPU going bad, it's a fault with the early 2011 MBP and if you have it under applecare still, get it in for service now.

Mine was out of applecare and it ate my logic board, I can't even power it up anymore, and it's a pricey fix, basically costing you the price of buying a MBA.

I had a warranty through square trade but it ended in august i didnt even know until now... can apple fix it if i drop it off at the store for the flat rate price? I heard its like 3 bills or something... if not is it even worth it to fix or should i just buy a new comp? im not really trying to spend money on a new comp since my mbp is only 3 years old :smh:

Flat rate/depot repair is $310. They won't even offer it if your MacBook is trashed. Sounds like Radeongate has reached you. The logic board will have to be replaced. They might waive your repair fees like they did mine. I never had Apple Care.

^ So do i just take my mbp to the apple store and they fix it free? what did you do to fix your mbp... besides the cost the only thing im worried about is losing my data which consists of pr0n, pictures, documents and spreadsheets... i guess if i get it to work ill transfer it over to an external hard drive which i can buy at walmart then return it after using it

Its either the hard drive or the hard drive cable/ribbon.

Most likely the ribbon though so your data will be fine. The part cost about $15 but im not sure how much apple will charge for the labor. i dont even know if apple will replace that small part for you.

There are times when apple dont even know how to diagnose the problem (apple employees working at apple. not the actual technicians.)

Lol make a reservation at the genius bar. You can do it on the Apple Store app. Nothing was missing on mine when I got it back. You should have an external hard drive on hand at all times for routine backups anyway. You never know what could happen. The next time it quits it might not come back on.

2011 MBP here and had the same issue. I noticed that this is a common issue with the graphics card. On mine it overheated and the whole board needed to be replaced. Luckily i had apple care and they replaced the whole board. There are threads on fourms with peope having the same issue come up again and again even after they paid for it to be replaced. :smh: :smh:

Apple needs to recall this and offer to fix any the faulty machines for free.

I had a similar issue with my 2011 MacBook Pro. It crashed on me while watching Netflix one day and I could not get it to boot from the HDD or Optical drive. Ended up selling it as-is a couple days ago for $400. Used that money towards the purchase of a new 21.5" iMac.

Anyone know of a good way to clean the macbook screen? Got an air during the summer and the screens been collecting some dirt and what not since then. Any recommendations or should I just go with water and lint free cloth wipe?

I have some Monster screen cleaner and a lint free cloth. Works really good. I forget how much it costed, but knowing Monster it was probably too much . You can probably use any cheap screen cleaner and a good lint-free cloth.

Can someone link me to the rechargeable battery for the early 15inch MBP. I swear i saw it up like a month ago on apples site but now it disappeared

Switching from PC to Mac I had to buy that stupid ethernet usb cord to transfer all my info to my new Mac. Taking the cord straight back after work today.

Probably going to have a bit of a learning curve so I may pop in with some questions, but so far I'm liking the switch.
