The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

Got a small dent on the back of the screen cover. Right on the edge! Its so tiny but its bugging me. Anyone know if apple is able to replace just the metal cover and how much that would be?

Looking for a shell case for my MB Air, anyone have any recommendations? Do those off brand ones on eBay like this do the job?

I wouldn't do it.

I was given one as a gift when I first bought my MBA. It developed a crack in it after a few months. It was nearly impossible to remove. I thought I was going to break the computer when I was removing it.

Runs fine with an external monitor but screen won't light up, any chance I won't have to replace the actual screen?

Why do you say that? I love my macbook air, but would not mind a 13 MBP with retina. I used to own a 15 MBP.

Finally listened to NT and copped a macbook.

What's best place to get decal stickers?

I've only been able to find stuff on Amazon and eBay and couple other misc sites but selection seems lacking.

Anyone have any idea when the new 15" MacBook Pro will be releasing?

I understand they recently updated the 13", but really need the 15.

Thank you

Probably the day after the next convention in June. I pre-configured 1 online the other day and they quoted a June 9-18 ship date I think. That's right in line with WWDC.

Will be getting the 13 inch MB Pro, don't see the need for Retina. Any tips on what i should ask for? Add-ons/upgrades?

Yo I really cannot be the only one having severe problems with Yosemite.. **** keeps crashing and freezing and im using a 2013 macbook.

**** is annoying as ****

got a late 2012 macbook, runs smooth, no complaints. Theres prob something wrong with your installation

Photo editing? I wouldn't use FCPX at all, go with a program built for it, Lightroom if you've got .raw in your workflow then to photoshop/illustrator if you're in need of more powerful tools.

Ok awesome, yea I have Lightroom and Photoshop on my PC, thought it may be different for Mac.

Any software you do recommend for a first time macbooker?

Everybody has different needs with software, the one thing that I almost always need is Max, which is a freeware audio converter for when I'm batching .Flac to .mp3 or ripping stuff from an actual cd.

http://sbooth.org/Max/

For the most part over the past 10 years I've gone from being a power user and having very specific needs with my software to basically just needing light editing stuff, so I get by mostly with what Apple has to offer. Occasionally something comes out that I have to have and I'll buy it, but off the top of my head a mac comes with a lot of the software you need to get by. If you deal with anything in an office setting, I'd suggest you go ahead and get a subscription to Office:365 for Mac, if you work on your own and never have to send files to people on PC, then you can probably get by with iWork, unless you have power user with specific Excel needs, then iWork will be severely lacking for you.

That's what I mean though. You're gonna drop $3,600 on a maxed out machine to use on photo editing? I do 1080p 3D animation and 5K video work on my $2500 build with no issues, so I just find it hard to recommend maxing out the system if photoshop is the extent of the stress you're putting on the machine.

Just my opinion though. Spend what you want. :pimp:

I probably won't eem use that much editing.

I just want a Mac, but like photography as a hobby. Haven't shot in a while due to not having the time, but my time recently freed up considerably.

I want the best Mac, doe. Which is what I'm asking. Open to suggestions on what the best/max build would be. I'll be using it for school too, though.

In all honesty, you don't need the fastest processor, sure it'll give you a good 6 years of use before you have to buy one, but if you're not moving a lot of .raw files at once, you're better off dumping in a lot of RAM, getting a good bit of SSD storage, and then building out an external array for use at home to store stuff when you don't need it on the go.

What are you shooting photos on? I know that I have a tendency not to delete much of anything so even with the biggest SSD you'll have 1TB of space, if you're anything like me and a digital pack rat, you'll run out of space in a few months. Stuff that I don't need immediate access to I just leave on my personal in home cloud, so I don't delete it for good, but don't carry pictures going back to the mid 2000s either. I have a few externals plugged into a powered USB Hub which then goes into my Airport Extreme, although you can do the same with just about any decent router now.

I'm on my 5th mac in 12 years, the only regrets I've ever had was spending too much late in a cycle and then wanting to buy the new one a little over a year later.

How's re-sell on them say I buy the newest 15" that will be coming out, maxed out everything as far as storage and processor, and plan to sell in about 3 years maybe?

I'm not too worried about the money, I don't mean to sound snobby but I just want the best and don't want to focus on what it costs. Certainly won't pay like $10k for a MacBook, though. That's just silly.

I'm thinking like $4-$5k my budget.

Macs have Insane resale, but idk how things are nowadays being that the newer models everything is soldered together so people cant cop and upgrade items on their own.

Yeah I haven't really paid attention to used mac prices lately, the last used one I got for a case of beer and a ride to the hardware store since I had a wagon.

Ok, so can you please answer my question. You've been great help so far, thank you!

I want the most expensive MacBook Pro, excluding software. Am I able to build it straight through the site or should I go to the store and talk to the representatives?

You can build it on the site. I don't think a team member at my local apple store has ever actually helped me find something.

If you're going to be moving around with your MBP a bit, I'd also highly suggest picking up an extra charger, I like to keep one in my laptop bag and the other at home.
