The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

^ I mean, it doesn't seem like you really need it when you already have a perfectly good PC. Doesn't look like you can shed quite an amount of money for one either, so you pretty much answered your own question.

i can afford it, just trying to justify buying one

If you have the extra money laying around, then go for it. If you're not happy with it, you can always sell it

I'm another life long PC user that's making the switch to the Apple ecosystem. Ordering the 27 inch 2.7 ghz iMac with 2 TB hd, magic track pad, and the wireless keyboard. I originally planned to get the high end 27 inch; however, I think this one will suffice for my computing needs, especially after I increase the RAM.

I'm an objective guy and I go by facts and functionality, not emotion and frilly %%+. I'm in school for an advertising degree. I have always owned a PC but have never been averse to Apple and Macs. I must say that I can't stand the stans that say their life is so much better because they have a Mac and that I'm less of a person for not owning one (heard it before). I own an iPad and have enjoyed my iPods throughout the years.

My question:
I am going to need to upgrade to a new computer by probably next fall and I am looking at all my options, Macs and PCs alike. Can you guys provide me functional reasons for why I should purchase an MPB. %%+ like "It just works" and "It's just better" aren't anything without good reasons behind them. If "it just works" explain to me why it just works and why I should spend a pretty significant amount of $$ for a MPB when I can get comparable machines for less.

I'm not here to argue or flame, just want some real, practical answers and reasons why you gentlemen (and ladies) own Macs.

Thanks in advance.

I've been following that thread and maybe I'll just copy and paste my question there, but I was hoping to get somewhat of an in-depth response.

Design
I think we can all agree that Apple laptops have the best design.

Everything from the backlit keyboard, aluminum casing, simplicity, and display are pretty desirable.

Longevity
From my personal experience I've been using the same laptop since 2006, and they hold their value fairly well, compared to other laptops.

Flexibility
If you really need windows, you can install it with bootcamp or parallels. Giving you the best of both worlds, 2 computers in 1.

So OTHER than price, why wouldn't you get a Macbook?

ok, i use a Mac, but i have a PC as well. HP Laptop and self built computer that ive had for a while.
In my opinion, Mac OS X is really light years ahead of Windows , as far as stability and ease of use. The OS is designed to make sense to how we as people think. from the dock, to the gestured(some are ridiculous, but some are VERY useful, expose and two finger scrolling mostly)

If you were getting a desktop, the purchase would be a little harder to recommend because of the price disparity and the way that you can upgrade and self maintain a desktop PC. but with laptops it all depends on the quality of the product that leaves the manufacturer. not much you can do about a poorly built laptop computer. Apple computers are very good hardware wise. They are made to be used a ton. you hear stories of people keeping their computers for years, because of the attention to detail Apple pays to their products.

having the Apple store is also a blessing, because if anything goes wrong, theres usually a place in driving distance you can get to , and have your machine serviced. my hp computer broke down over time, and i take care of my gadgets. also, with the new Unibody design Apple is using, these things are built to last. theres nothing better than needing to use your computer in a crunch and never have to worry about if its gonna give you any problems. the only downside i would say is gaming, but no laptop can run games anyway , pc or mac. not well enough for serious gaming anyway. again, you can still install Windows if need be(work and school applications), but the hardware is an investement thats well worth it and retains a ton of value. if you have the money, get a Mac, you wont regret it.

For me it's the "it just works" argument that sold me on macs.  When people say I that I think it refers mostly to the synergy between the hardware and software.  With windows machines you have an infinite amount of configurations of hardware and drivers have to written for every one of those devices.  Not only so they work properly but also so that they don't conflict with other devices.  On the mac side you have a tightly controlled system so the number of challenges is reduced greatly.  The hardware isn't any better and with windows 7 I think the OS' are almost on par.  So when people say "it just works" and comment on the user experience I feel they are talking about this synergy.  It's the same with the iOS devices.  Just to clarify I'm very computer literate. I was building machines back in the windows 3.1 days.  I made the switch partly because apple made the move to intel chips and also my work in the audio field got more computer intensive so a mac was somewhat of a necessity.

You need to migrate your original iTunes Library from your old CPU to your Mac. You could do that through home sharing or copy your original iTunes music folder and replacing the folder on your new CPU. That's the only way to sync your phone to your new CPU with the same data.

does anyone know of any good zip opening programs? i have a zip file that im having a VERY hard time opening.

Finally did the SSD/ optibay upgrade the other day. It is WAYYY faster. Battery life has gotten shorter but that's the sacrifice you make with two drives. I'll probably just get a larger SSD if it becomes a major problem for me. Anyone that really needs the speed increase should definitely look for an SSD.
