The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

It hasn't happened recently but within my first week of owning the MBP. I've had 3 kernel panics, and they have all been completely random

Scratch that, had two yesterday and one more this morning. No idea where to even start troubleshooting.

You just bought it, right? If so, don't even waste your time trying to troubleshoot....TAKE IT BACK ASAP. I can honestly say that I've never had a kernel panic in 2 years of owning a MBP. Maybe you just got a lemon...it happens.

Apple is pretty generous with returns/exchanges, so take advantage. Yeah, it'll be a hassle. But when you get a properly functioning machine, imagine the peace of mind you'll have.

Also, did you buy AppleCare? If not, I'd suggest investing in it. Well worth the $$ should something come up later down the road.

Make a genius appointment. If you don't have an Apple store close by then you'll have to call and send it in. Most of the time kernel panics are the result of bad memory. I would imagine they would swap it out in store in a matter of minutes.

Would that fall under my 1 year warranty?

And naw I didn't get Applecare. kinda seems like a rip off to me

I upgraded to 10.8.1 for the "supposed battery fix" and I swear my battery life got worse. The battery percentage drops a few % when I'm gone for a few minutes. >: Apple

:x Need that quick fix...

Apple needs to get it done so we can be back in business

I don't know to put those but here we go. I've had my MBP since 2010. Still running amazing but it's not as crisp as it was on day one. I feel like it's "dirty" and needs to be cleaned up a bit. Just a lot of unnecessary things that are slowing it down I guess. What would be the best (and easiest) way to make it run smooth again?

Maybe not the best way, but I would put all the files you want on an external, then format you HDD and do a clean install of your OS. And add more RAM

Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure that'll fall under your 1-yr.  How long have you had it?  I think you have 14 days to exchange it with no questions asked, so if you fall within that timeframe that could be an option.

And yeah, Applecare is pricey when you add it to the purchase price and tax from a mac.  But you're also covered for 3 years, as opposed to 1.  Personally, I'm not tech savvy enough to get too in depth with troubleshooting.  So being able to bring in my MBP and have it serviced locally is a nice "perk", albeit a paid one.  And while I haven't had any issues with my computer, from past experiences w/ an iPad, I can say that their service is pretty good.

Anyone update to mountain lion from snow leopard. I'm still running snow leopard and i've been thinking of upgrading to ML. Any negatives to it, i was gonna upgrade to Lion back when it released but heard negative things about it. I've also heard MS Office 2008 is spotty with ML. Read people having issues with it yet some haven't, what gives? Thanks.

Stick with Snow Leopard. I wish I never upgraded to Lion and now ML since my battery life on my MBP took a big hit. I installed a brand new battery since my old one had almost 1000 cycles. My battery on ML never lasts more than a couple hours. :smh: @ Apple. A lot of people are having this problem right now.

Thanks, these are things i'm looking for. I have the first unibody macbook that came out in late 2008 and it's still running flawlessly. Battery still gives me several hours of life when i'm not plugged in. Looks like i'll skip this until Apple has a fix for it. Thanks.

Just made an appoint to go to Bridgestreet tomorrow. When I was in the process of shutting it down I got another "Please restart your computer" message. So hopefully they'll be able to tell what's going on.
But I got it like 3 or 4 weeks ago. If it's as simple as new memory then great. I'd rather not have to get a new machine completely. It took forever just to transfer everything to the MBP in the first place.

^ Gotcha.  I'm sure it sucks to have your first experience w/ a Mac start like this, but they'll take care of you at Bridgestreet man.  I'm far from an Apple fanboy, but I can say that their service is great and they definitely work to make sure you're satisfied.

Hopefully they can pinpoint the issue and you'll be back up and running without too much hassle though.

edit:  Forgot to mention it, but don't get to Bridgestreet early thinking you'll be seen sooner.  It doesn't happen lol.  I made the mistake of getting there 45 minutes early for an appointment b/c I had time to kill.  And I waited all of those 45 minutes browsing NT on a 27" iMac.

I got a couple questions for you guys.

Are any of you guys running the latest OS Mountain Lion on a EARLY 2011 MBP? 15" to be exact.

How are you guys liking it? I'm currently running 10.7.4 Lion (upgraded from Snow leopard 10.6 originally)

Is it a major improvement? The transition from 10.6 to 10.7 was terrible imo. so I don't want to upgrade unless it will actually be better.

any key features you miss by upgrading?

If you're already on 10.7 I don't see any reason not to upgrade, it just adds better iCloud support and a couple other useful features like notification center. Some people have mentioned getting worse battery life but I haven't noticed any issues on my rMBP

just picked up an airport extreme and the speeds are amazing! range is pretty far as well....happy i cop my old router was on its death bed

Running ML at a Core2Duo from Mid 2009. Runs perfectly. A bit faster than Lion for sure. Go for the upgrade folks.

Started the DL a couple hours ago after I got pretty much the same advice from multiple people.

Also - checked my battery health and its getting bad. Any tips/advice/suggestions on the purchase of a new battery? Apple Store? Ebay? Amazon?

*Was searching around in the mac battery thread and it looks like I'm not in great shape:

I was about the ask the same question. I just noticed that my macbook battery is bloated.

Should I buy one off of Amazon or just go with a legit battery from Apple?

I ordered a refurb and it came in yesterday.  Speeds put the Linksys and Netgear routers I previously used to SHAME.  Probably also helps that I got an updated modem yesterday from my ISP.  But so far, so good.

The ecosystem is almost complete--just waiting on an iMac announcement so I can get these kids to stop using the MBP for homework.

Nice brah, I~m going to cop a 27 in imac in a a yr or 2, my 15 09 mbp runs like butter so I got no complaints. I might cop a MB Air though when that time comes for on the go. I like my ipad but the Air can do much more.

^ Son, the Air is calling me.  I'm on a 13" 2010 MBP that still runs great, but I've been contemplating throwing it up on eBay to put towards an Air.  Also been contemplating selling my iPad, since I can get $650ish for that still.

Not sure what to do though, because having an Air and iPad is slightly redundant.  But I also love the iPad for random times like laying in bed, walking around the crib, dropping deuces, etc.

Not sure I can will myself to get rid of it since I've noticed I do use it more than the MBP when I'm at home.

Yea I'm on the fence, I mean the air is OD light so I guess it won't be bad in bed, but it's clutch on the toilet even though I could use my phone. I use my 15in Mbp like at my desk so it's pretty much like a desktop lol

I plan on going to grad school in the near future too so air is clutch for that even though I can do same on iPad.

Idk mane I'm on the fence lol I'm not dropped the 3k for them anytime soon so oh well

how much do you think a 08 unibody mb in good condition could go for? 4gb 250gb SL battery will need a replacement soon though.

thinking about letting mine go
