The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

I'm thinking of buying a mbp and I'm in college. Should I buy the 2012 13" lower end model for $999 or wait for retina version? I assume 13" retina would be $1499 and up. I also don't know how long I'll have to wait till it comes out.

What college are you attending? Sorry, for the asking, but the reason is that for anyone not using graphic intense programs such as final cut/adobe PS, illustrator etc. or doing heavy gaming. I would recommend to consider the MB Air as an option. Speed is more then enough for internet, MS Office etc., but the fact that it's so much lighter and thinner is crazy. I got a MBP, but ended up switching majors and although I love it, I want to replace it for an Air, because of the better mobility, while being able to perform ordinary tasks just as effectively.

If you want to wait out on the retina display, which should be released Q4 this year, I'd check what GPU it'll have, I think the 15' one's, which usually have more powerful GPU's have a "hard" time rendering pictures, which is a mind blowing 12 megapixels per frame.

(great avy btw, hotness; and can not wait for the new season.)

^ I'm attending CSU East Bay for business. I do need a laptop that can handle photoshop in the future when I get back into photography. I don't do any gaming either. I'm trying to hold out and wait to see the news about the 13" retina version.

Ok so I purchased a macbook pro about 3 years ago for school. I see now that it's way to powerful for my uses for it, insurance is almost up on it and I'm thinking of flipping it and getting an Air. I'll mostly be using it for music, web browsing, and writing papers so can anyone recommend a certain model to go with? Thanks in advance.

Well, depends what your preferences are. For me the 11" is way too small, and the problem with the SSD is that it's capacity is still relatively low and the high end model is a bit steep. I'm waiting out a bit, hoping that along with the MBP's, the Airs' SSD will get an upgrade, thus the low end 13" will come with 256 GB, which is ok with an external HD, but 128 GB? That's just too little.

@dream5hift - they should be dropping soon, probably after the iPad mini event, but I'd suppose before the beginning of christmas, so shipments can go out, by mid december, landing numerous MBP's under Christmas trees.

good news, rumors say it'll launch alongside the iPad mini on the 23rd of October.

Guys I have a $100 Gift Card to the iTunes/Mac App Store. Can anyone recommend programs/items that are worth purchasing?
Thanks.
PO

The mac app store kinda sucks. There's nothing I really wanted or needed
I did buy the Moutian Lion update, and a app called BetterSnapTool

Idk if you've ever used Windows 7 or not but one of the most useful features within it is aero snap, it's when you can drag a window to the side and it'll resize the window to take up half the screen. So if you're working two things you can have them both shown at the same time. BettererSnapTool is the only way I found on OS X to do that

Has anyone ever bought a re-chargerable replacement battery for a Mac Book off of Amazon? How was it compared to the one that already comes with the Mac Book?

Anyone know where/how I can update to Mountain Lion for free? My Macbook is really old and I need to upgrade my OS.

This. I'm running 10.5.8

I just got the iphone5 and cant even put music on my phone

:smh:

take it to the apple store. i was still running leopard on my macbook and i couldn't activate my iPhone 5, so they upgraded me to snow leopard for free. then i upgraded to mountain lion (it's only $20).

Thinking about getting the new 13" BP with retina display. Is flash memory up-gradable in macbooks or will I be stuck with the 156 gigs that comes with it?

flash memory is upgradable.

You sure? I thought everything on the Retina models were all one piece like the 15 inch retina and MBA?
Because those are sold with the specs being non upgradable.

I know the stuff in the new iMac is upgradable though

I want the new iMac soo bad. I have a early 2008 version that has been doing great. I'm also going to be looking into the MB air.

Get that iMac, all day bro. Its worth it so much more than the MB Air. I would suggest waiting to cop an Air because they might upgrade those next year.

I'm not for sure about them being upgraded, but I know you would enjoy that new slim iMac more than anything. That joint is TOO sick.

But to keep it completely honest, you could cop both the Air and the new iMac for cheaper than a 15 inch Retina
