The Official Mac Thread (Docs, Themes, Apps, Etc.)

Two questions:

1) I have an older MBP (bought at the end of 2008). My CD/DVD drive/player stopped working completely, anyone ever experience this?

2) A while back I bought an HDMI to DVI video cable for MBP-HDTV connection. But only the picture plays on my big screen, the audio plays off my laptop and not on the TV.
Did you try going to System Preferences>sound> and selecting a different output audio?

How do I reset a MacBook Pro to original factory settings so it would be like I'm barely turning it on for the first time after I reboot?
Oh yeah I don't have the original discs btw lol and it's from '09

Are you trying to sell it?  You could buy Snow Leopard and boot from that after erasing the drive.  If not, just buy Mountain Lion, backup your drive, then do the following...

1. Press Command, Option and R keys while your computer is starting.

2. Open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and erase the drive.

Nah, I'm not trying to sell lol. I alread have Mountain Lion installed(with office 2011 and along with bootcamp for windows 7, came like that) but I just want to wipe it clean and get a fresh start with it. Is Mountain Lion available only via itunes? and I'd lose office if i did reset right?

I just rebooted my air when I got it a few weeks ago. When you reset it, its gonna ask for your apple ID and password and you have to have bought ML through your account. If not then you need to use somebody else' macbook because they have the app store on it, sign in and buy it through there and you can't use the app store at apple stores for some reason because it doesn't let you sign in. If you already have it though and its through your apple account then you're all good. I'm pretty sure you would lose your office because its going to factory settings which doesn't include office.

Yeah the thing is though, I don't know how exactly mountain lion got on there(not that I'm complaining; I'm not as familiar with Mac OS though :smh:) I'm sure it was installed but how? anyways, I haven't ever logged on with my apple ID on my macbook (ml was already there when I got it.) How do you install ml from one macbook onto another?

EDIT: wait, so once I purchase ml with my apple ID, I can install ml on any mac that I'm signed onto with?

Another question: has anybody changed the administrator password using a single user mode?
And how would I reset/clean/restore an 09 imac without the original OS discs?

i need some help, how can i connect my old windows desktop to a 27' imac, so that i can toggle between both? pm me or post please

This might be the wrong thread as I swear there was another Mac thread, but oh well.

Does anyone have the retina display? The 15" is amazing but that price rag is not. I'm thinking about going for the 13"

Is anyone else having a problem with their mail app constantly asking for their yahoo email password? Mine has been doing that for months and I decided to delete the outgoing and incoming servers and now I can't even get mail to load any of my messages....

Yup happens to me I just hit ok.

Is there an app or program where I can stream my MBP to my google tv? I sold my Apple TV but not like it matter I have a core 2 duo so air play doesn't work

Need help troubleshooting.

I'm running OS X10.6.8 if that info is needed.

When using NT, if I click on any pictures that people have uploaded to the NT database as well as whenever I'm in the B/S forum and want to go from page 1 to page 2 the pinwheel thing comes up and just keeps spinning. If I have any other tabs open and I click them the websites are just blank white and they all have to be force re-loaded or I have to quit Safari and start fresh again

Any help would be appreciated to fix this problem.

Copped a 2010 macbook today, for a deal I suppose. But im running 10.6.8 snow leopard, I don't see lion in the app store but I wana update this to Mountain Lion. Any info on what I could do? I know you typically have to upgrade each software up.

if memory serves, i believe you can jump from 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion. Just make sure your hardware meets the requirements (it should)

for the apple nerds

got an old 20" G4 iMac for free the other day. using it as a digital picture frame, and also got the original sims on it, can't think of any other uses

Nice, I was able to update it directly to ML. no complaints now, plus the dude sold me this mac with apple care on it, I got a free charger from apple. life is good.

How is Pages and Keynote compared to Word and Powerpoint? I've never used Pages but am thinking of buying it along with keynote. Are these two good alternatives for Word and PP? Also, would I be able to save files as a word doc or powerpoint doc and would it save them correctly? I've used google docs and did a powerpoint and saved it as a powerpoint but it ended up saving weird and the work was everywhere and not how I did it.

^I've used the Microsoft Suite all throughout school. I got a MacBook in college and tried their respective counterparts like Pages and Keynote. While they were useful in their own ways, it's a lot different. I just figured since I was used to the PC programs, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And as far as the compatibility issues, it's almost always gonna be off a little, which is why I found the Office Suite for Macs and continued using it, both because I already knew it and because it was the usual norm in school, decreasing compatibility issues.

Oh, and the original reason I came in here:

I'm planning to upgrade my 2008 MacBook finally. I kinda want an Air cause I use public transit a lot and any weight I can shave off, the better.

I'm gonna be using CS6 heavy, so the faster, the better. How much RAM can I upgrade to? And what's the biggest hard drive since its all flash? Oh, and when are the upgrades coming up? Should I just tough it out til the next revamp?

Help me out, I know there are some real Mac heads on here!
