I've been making mixtapes for all my friends for years, and always know all the local dude with all the new music.

I just counted I have over 8,000 cds and 45gigs

and have a very wellrounded selection/appreciation of different types of hiphop music.

I decided to try my hand at djing I just recently graduated from college and I think this would be an excellent side job to help pay off some studentloans

Any dj's know how hard it is to get in the game? Whats the best djing software to download?? Acceptable rates to start off charging? I'm I would haveto start off doing some shows for free or the low to get known.

Any tips? All helpful!

I didn't see you mention any equipment. That's the first thing you're gonna have to invest in. Decide if you want CD turntables or the regularjoints. You're also going to need a mixer, speakers, etc. DJing is not a cheap thing to get involved with. But the money you spend makes it self back overtime. Work on your craft before jumping out there. DJing parties are not easy. You have to learn how to read your crowd. Starting out you may want to dosomething like house parties for friends and families. That will build your references as well. Software wise, Serato Scratch Live is the "standard"I guess you can say. Again, another hefty priced item, but well worth it. I don't know how I survived without it. Your first step though, is startinvesting in the equipment you need first. And check out some DJ mixing tutorials and stuff on YouTube to really get involved into the craft of being a DJ.

what u really need:

2 technic 1200's
with serato live
and a good laptop

and a good amp n speaker setup n ur good....

but start up small like lil house parties and like dcshoechick said ..be able to read your crowd and
just do your own thing, do not let other people tell you how/what to do

if your good, people will eventually spread the word and doors will open left to right

Start off doin sets (college house parties) and work your way up if your good your buzz will spread quickly established relationships with club promoters andradio jockeys. Its kinda easy to come up in the Dj game just understand your audience play what THEY want to hear not what you think is good. I seen my dude Locome up from a nobody to doin sets at University of Alabama to gettin a stack a night at clubs in less than a year.

As far as what to charge u might want to do favors and do it for free and get your name out there for a couple of months and once your in demand charge what uwant. You throw mix cds together and sell them in the mean time for gas money ya feel me

You should atl east get a feel of the basics one way or another if you really can do such a thing. You might as well start with a decent set of tables, atleast get a used set of Technics 1200s and a pretty good beginner mixer such as a Vestax 05 pro. . At least that way, you can decide whether its really foryou. I knew so many people who went all out on equipment, yet they didn't end up liking the whole gig or couldn't even do the basics even when theytried/practice. Being a club DJ is such a high goal. You need to pretty much work your way up. See if you can hang doing small gigs such as small parties orso. People tend to think ahead of themselves when they haven't even mixed a song their whole damn life.

You lost already , who goes on niketalk and asks how to be a DJ ?

Then some dude replies " get a mean +%% drop " ...

I swear yall dudes need to get out ya cribs and live , respect the art ... You want a side gig , become a waiter .

I'm about to make my own thread for this but yeah if you're serious about the DJ thing check out this site.

BTW it's owned by Funkmaster Flex....So yeah check it out.

don't charge artists for things that should be free... like promotion. everyone want a buck in this game its sick.

Do most DJ's still buy there own speakers???

I thought most clubs had their own sound system??

wow you work for franchise or something???

anyways...don't go out and buy a laptop or scratch live.

please..for the love of god and respect of all other DJs who paid their dues...start out on vinyl, learn how to beatmatch w/ turntables and a mixer, then comeback

Yes, but we can't practice at clubs now can we? Most of us start in the bedroom, where you need your own speakers to practice.

Oh, and I agree with the RawSheed. I highly recommend starting off WITHOUT Serato or other digital DJing tools. Trust me, its a lot better if you start off bybuying records and practicing how to beat match and scratch. The reason is because with Serato, you can easily look at the waveforms on your laptop and thatmakes it quite a bit easier to beatmatch. The thing about mixing is that you're supposed to use your ears and not your eyes, and with Serato, you'dprobably be tempted to look at the waveforms. I know I would have occasionally looked at the waveforms, and I'm glad I started out with just records. Heck,I've been spinning for over a year now and I still haven't invested in Serato.

Also, I recommend buying reasonably good quality equipment. Don't buy cheap equipment because they will break quicker and once you get better, you'deventually want to invest in some good equipment. Plus, even if you find out that DJing isn't for you, you could still sell them for a good priceespecially Technics 1200's which can easily last a good 10 years if you take care of them. Now, I'm not saying buy a Rane TTM56 mixer, because thatwill cost A LOT. Maybe the Vestax PMC-05 Pro II? Its a pretty solid mixer for scratching and mixing Hip Hop and R&B.

Just take your time with this art form. No need to rush things.

How do you have 8,000 CD's and 45 gigs?

I have 1,200 and I'm up in the 80-90 gigs. I mean I have a bunch of singles but even if i made a 15 track CD with all my singles it wouldnt add up to 8,000

MACS are to expensive :[

I use a Dell. I just made sure it had a least the minimum specs needed for Serato. And Serato is like the only program I have on it. I don't clog up mylaptop with programs and junk in order to keep things running smoothly. I've never had a problem with my Dell while DJing. Mac users get on me, butI've been doing fine, thank goodness.

And I forgot to mention the same thing others have mentioned...learn first without Serato if you're just getting into DJing. Serato has been good for thoseof us that started on vinyl, but bad for all the newbies coming. I say it's bad because they are not learning the basics of DJing. Newbies who start off onSerato have that habit of looking at the waves to beat match, count beats, etc. Learn the basics before getting on Serato. I have a friend that teaches kidshow to DJ, and he doesn't let them touch Serato until they have come along far enough using "regular" records. I tell everyone that wants to getinto DJing to do the same.

And yeah, I don't see how posting all that info for Franchise Record Pool is helping out dude. lol

You need to learn how to spin WITHOUT Serato 1st. That's the problem with the game now. Cats thinking all they need is a laptop and some tables or cds andeverything is a go. Learn how to spin with your ears then move on to Serato. Brand yourself as DJ and the doors will definitely open for you. Network with anyand all DJs in your area. Network with promoters as well as club owners. Create a set of goals for yourself and pretty much take it from there. Good luck.

I've been making my own mixtapes fo me and my boys for before we go to the club. I usually do house/dance/electro mixes and occasionally hip hop andreggae. I would like to be an actual party dj but I honestly feel a bit intimidated by all the equipment (and the price). my peoples that I give copies toalways love my mixes and their friends always ask me or them for copies.
I convert the songs into a wav format and mix the songs together by using the basic windows audio player that comes with windows xp. I have a good amount ofmusic (especially dance and house) and also sound bites like scratches, sirens, horns, etc. it usually takes me some hours to make an 80 minute mix because ihave to listen to the songs and know when to break them up and mix them together to lead on to the next song by just using a basic windows audio player.

with what I do with windows audio, is it similar to mixing with actual equipment, or are they 2 completely different things??
