As far as the topic, L gets a world of props from me, but I would'nt put him in my top 10.

all them harlem dudes kinda sound the same anyway....

but what do I know, I'm from the south...

anyway, I stand corrected.

Mann.. i thought L was an overall respected dude but after reading a couple of the comments i guess i was wrong

He was a respected dude , I`m pretty sure most of the cats commenting in this thread weren't out of their baby cribs or elementary school when L was out .

L was always an underground cat , he ran with DITC , an underground crew and was on heavy rotation on college radio and the mixtape scene . His album was onlyrecognized by "heads" . It wasn't until he passed that his freestyles got praise from the more mainstream listener ,when DJ`s started throwingthem out there more often . Ebonics was his biggest record back then , and before that it was MVP (summer smooth mix ).

'Lifestylez of da poor and dangerous' is one dope album, but I don't believe he's the GOAT. He had some funny lines though.

how can a freaking punchline rapper be the goat, yea i know he can do more than that but this is his thing, he is good but not goat...

arguably the goat punchline artist

but nah man. like, i liked the him, actually, i really liked the him. however, i couldnt crown him the greatest, no way.

i wish he was alive though, can you imagine if coc were together still? ahh i hate 'what if's'

Don't get me wrong Big L is crazy nice but...

As previously mentioned, Big L's whole flow and delivery is derived from his mentor Lord Finesse. Even though lyrically he was nicer, I believe thisdisqualifies him from being the G.O.A.T. Who that leaves in the running besides Pac and Big is debatable.

so i say great, but not GOAT.

He is GOAT and my personal favorite rapper, I could care less what anyone else thinks.

RIP Lamont Coleman

people don't understand this question in the slightest...saying Big L is higher on the greatest all time list than Jay/Nas is like saying HookMitchell>MJ

it's just stupid. Big L was probably the most talented emcee to ever touch a mic, imo it's between him, BIG, and Pun but regardless, ranking L ahead of other all time greats is doing a disservice to those other legends. Would things have been different if he had lived? Probably but hedidn't so it's a mute point.

talent≠greatness, i really dont think NT will ever understand that concept

Yeah, Jay-Z was desperately trying to fill his time slot making random noises and struggling, it was pathetic. My man L spit nicer off the top than most peoplehave made songs. Then again, L bodies everyone. On any joint i've seen him on he comes out with the illest verse. It's just something about him, youcan just sense his talent. Also, if you liked that, peep Harlem's Finest a Freestyle History vol 1 and 2.

Having Big L as your personal favorite rapper of all time is perfectly acceptable but to assert that he was the GOAT and make no case to back the claim upother than "He was sick with the punchlines," "He out-rapped Jay-Z back when Jay was pretty average," "He was so raw," etc. isjust preposterous.

I would be willing to bet that dudes who are so in love with L were NOT up on him when he was alive because at that time he wasn't even considered the bestMC in DITC! He was maybe third or fourth behind O.C., Lord Finesse, and possibly even AG. Dude certainly wasn't even a contender for King Of NY (that wasBIG, Nas, Raekwon, etc.), much less the GOAT. He was always considered nice but that's about where it stopped- and where it should continue to stop.

while i usually laugh when people bring up rappers as GOAT and their names arent Jay-z or Nas or BIG , i cant really argue with you.

i can defintely see why hes you GOAT. while i wont agree, hes absolutely HipHop hall of fame

Dude was incredible.

Unfortunately, his career got cut VERY, VERY short.

I'd be hardpressed to call Jay the Goat if her got bodied after RD...

One of the most vastly overrated rappers ever....................EVER!! Big L was greatly talented, but if your looking for deep or well thought out lyrics, you might as well find another rapper to look at.

Big L might be the greatest freestyle rapper ever, but because he's that type of rapper his rhymes are never really deep compared to Nas or Jay.
100% Truth.

basically my exact words from that 15 page "Jay is overrated" thread

He Was nice but not GOAT He was good at what he did at that was deliver punchlines and he was a alright storyteller. He might have been tearing stuff up if hiscareer wasn't cut short cause he was gonna sign to the ROC

"alright"? Gonna have to disagree with you there. "Casualties of a Dice Game" and "The Heist" are definitely morethan average story tracks.

Big L is one of my personal favorites. I think he did the punchline thing better than a lot of cats are doing today and it's clear where a lot of catsstyle comes from (Freck Billy wishes he was Big L

). He had a lot ofpotential tho. He's like the Len Bias of rap.
