Dad- He grew around the era when rap was starting to become nationwide (early 80s) so he likes it some what and helistened to OG rappers (Kurtis Blow, Big Daddy Kane, Juice Crew, KRS-ONE, etc). In today's rap, he likes the more conscious rappers (Common, Talib, MosDef, etc.). But he definitely doesn't listen to rap as much as me (he's more into R&B) and I think he doesn't understand the concept ofpunchlines (metaphors). Sometimes he's like, "How can you listen to this negative *@@#?", then of course I try to explain how I appreciated thepunchlines and lyricism being put together in the verses and he hits me with the
and walks away.
Mom- My mom listened to a little rap in the 80s (she came to America from the Philipines in 1981) but she alwaysfavored Smooth (Ballad) Rock and R&B. The only thing I use to catch her listening to when I was growning up was Tupac (from my dad), some of the OG rappersI listed above, and LL Cool J
. And as for today, she dislikesmost hip hop artist (surprisingly, I can't really blame her). But I sometimes try to put her on current artists and she usually hits me with, "Timo(my nickname), why can't they just sing it, and why do they always rap about guns, drugs, girls, and cars." Although, she also appreciates concsiousrappers (and R&B collabos of course), I doubt she would ever get the concept of a punchline either.
Anyways, post some of your parents views on rap music.
