QUESTION FOR NaS FANS

So first off, I am a big Nas fan too. I have every one of his albums. But something has been bothering me a lot recently and I wanted some opinions about it.

Nas has some classic material no doubt. But he also has a boatload of crap. I mean, Nastradamus was one of the worst cds I have ever bought in my life inretrospect, and he has a lot of really average-garbage albums (street disciple, god's son, untitled, etc). I realize that almost every great artist has putout some awful material at one point or another. Jay-Z has vol. 3 and kingdom come, Outkast has idlewild....you get the idea. You may not agree with thoseexamples but you know what I am talking about.

Anyways NT, so why does Nas seem to get a free pass when it comes to making horrible music? I cant figure it out. Sure he has some CLASSIC, best HH ever typematerial. But he also has a whole lot of trash. I feel like if any other rapper had such an inconsistent catalog, they would NEVER be regarded as one of thebest ever. But why does this not seem to apply to Nas? At this point in his career, I feel he has released as much crap music as brilliant music. Is it justme?

Thoughts NT?

Because IMO Nas can make a "wack" joint..But its still better than anything that is being put out by other rappers at that time, So Nas will prevailregardless of whether the joint is good or bad

and i dont think that Nas really put out any wack songs
Nastradamus was ill in my opinion

Godson is not garbage.

I keep my comments to myself, i bet someone is gonna mention wack beats for an excuse.

ARTIST GO OUT THERE ELEMENT SOMETIMES AND IT DOES COME OFF WACK SOMETIMES.. BUT TO KOBE WON STREETS DISCIPLE IS NO WHERE NEAR BETTER THAN BLUE PRINT 2..I'M SORRY BRUH SD WAS NICE AT HIS WORST.

God's Son is honestly one of my favorite albums.
IMO his most complete album, it's really good to me.
Untitled was dope as hell to me too.

Nastradamus doesn't compare to his other albums, it just wasn't as good.
Street's Desciple, ehh. There is alot of filler in there. If he had shortened to just 1 disk, I think it would have been pretty good.

That's the only 2 Nas albums that I have a legit gripe with, and SD isn't even that bad.
All of his other material is great to me.

I disagree with that.
He's just not that good at making mainstream music, so he sticks to what he can do.

i mean every artist now and then puts out some trashy music.... take a look at both of their catalouges (Esco&Hov) Hov puts out some monster albums thatcant be argued with because of the continuous hit singles he has dropped and the production crew that he is surrounded with. Nas does have choice of pickinghis own beats but IMO he is not really that great at doing so. Jay has a great ear for music and sometimes I feel thats the biggest difference between them.Nas does work with a slew of producers that have impacted the game and even has used the same and vice versa that Hov uses. Gods Son is a dope album,Nastradamus has its moments but i dont think its complete trash. if the beat selection on many of his so called "trash" joints were different thisthread wouldnt exist.

also, take a look at the amount of unreleased Nas material out there, he could of easily released the N word tape as an album and it would have been dope. TheLost Tapes is a prime example, being that it was music that was never used for the I Am album which was supposed to be a DBL CD. Nas can easily drop anotherLost Tape joint filled with material that never has been out.

i dont feel that there is a trash album from both of their catalouges but if i had to pick it would be

Jay-Z-BP 2

Nas-Streets Disciple

Streets Theme was pretty good btw

For everyone replying with "Gods son is not garbage," and "Untitled is NOT garbage," i just want to clarify that I never said it wasgarbage. The only album to me that was trash was Nastradomus. I just think they are very average and ordinary, by Nas standards.

The point I was trying to make is I personally feel, that our of 9 albums, only 3 of them were amazing. With that being said, what Im having trouble with isthe fact that someone considered a great artist has only really put out 3 great albums. And its not like he has 3 great albums out of 5. He has 3 great albumsout of 9.

street disciple, god's son, were not bad albums they were actually pretty good imo, i mean i guess its all about what your expecting from NaS and peopledon't get it thats when they label the album as garbage, and often when an artist tries to make music out of their proverbial lane i.e. common and electriccircus it is garbage, but in Nas case this simply is not true... I understand where you are coming from calling them average for "Nas standards"however not every album is going to be prefect, and define amazing because if you only have 3 albums as being amazing and these are his albums

Illmatic
It Was Written
I Am…
Nastradamus
Stillmatic
God's Son
Street's Disciple
Hip Hop Is Dead
Untitled album
The Lost Tapes

I mean i can at least find 5 that I personally classify as amazing, but hey its all perception right?

ANY big time artist gets this treatment. There will always be people in their fan base who takes their work for more than what it is or defend their weakmaterial.
Jay-Z has vol. 3 and kingdom come, Outkast has idlewild

And that's the thing, look at threads on here that are made and there's still people that will say "It's a dope album", "It'sfar from wack", etc. for those albums you mentioned. Can you blame them? If it's their favorite artist the is more than likely to happen.

Aside from Nastradamus, when has Nas ever made "horrible" music? Seriously. I'm not being biased at all. Again GS is above being just an averagealbum.
That's the only 2 Nas albums that I have a legit gripe with, and SD isn't even that bad.
All of his other material is great to me.

If I had to pick two albums of his to have a gripe with it would be I Am and Nastradamus. I thought I Am was a good album, nothing more, nothing less.
On the flipside, Jay's bad albums are literally intolerable. Under no conditions can I sit down and listen to an album filled with pop garbage like "Pop 4 Roc"
That's an overstatement. "Intolerable"? Vol. 3 and BP2 are some of his weakest albums, but they're not "intolerable".

And Nas only having 3 great albums?

i think I'm one of the few people that think nastradamus wasn't a bad album actuality it was pretty Good with the exception of like 4 songs. my leastfavorite is streets disciple it just doesn't flow like an album. plus he has so much unreleased material that only real fans have heard so they hold himhigher. when most people haven't heard these songs so they base just of the catalogue

Again, I reiterated the fact that I NEVER said they were garbage. I said Nastradamus was a garbage album, and will stand by it. I said Gods Son and Untitledwere average. Thanks for offering nothing to this thread. Thumbs up.

*sigh*

nastradamus was garbage because.....

Nastradamus is Nas' fourth studio album released under Columbia Records, and his first album to be released under his new imprint Ill Will Records. The LP was released to the public in November 1999 and was originally intended to be a release of the bootlegged second disc of I Am..., but it was instead decided, seven months after the release date of I Am..., to record an entirely new LP. It debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 selling 232,000 copies in its first week.

The resulting Nastradamus album has therefore been almost unanimously regarded as Nas' worst LP, receiving his weakest ratings from many publications such as Allmusic and The Source. Many believe the record wasn't as good because it was rushed to be released only a few months after I Am.... Others, however, took issue with the flossy/jiggy style production on the album, a complaint mollified for some by the Nastradoomus MF Doom mashup bootleg created by Max Bedroom. However, despite the criticism leveled at the album, it still managed to receive a Platinum certification by the RIAA.

I am the double album was bootlegged-

they split that album in 2, added a couple of new songs on the first disc and released it as one CD.

they scrapped the second disc at the VERY LAST MINUTE and nas rushed to make new songs....horrible idea that still plagues him to this day.

most of the second disc's song were released as what we know today as THE LOST TAPES..which is crack in plastic digital media form.

everyone puts out good/bad songs. It's the balance between them that counts. Meaning he has way more dope songs than garbage....Nastradamus and Godson isNOT garbage.

Amazing Lp's
Illmatic
It Was Written
Stillmatic
Lost Tapes

Very Good Lp's
God Son
HipHop Is Dead

Good Lp's
I Am
Streets Disciple

Below Average
Nastradamus (its actually much better than most give it credit for imo)

Haven't heard Untitled yet (yea I'm on bull $@#*)

Please name me more than 2 people who have catalogs like this. In fact there is only 1 artist who has this amount of quality on their resume. Add to the factthat his catalog is actually the most dissected of any rapper I've ever seen and the statement that he gets away with putting out mediocre material justdoesn't sound right.
