Do you help the poor?

I was having this discussion with my boy, and he was saying there is no reason to help the poor, it isn't logical.

My left-leaning self went into this big discussion on how we should help the poor. He brought up this idea of a life boat: Say the human race is 100 people andthere is a lifeboat that can carry 50. Does it make sense that we all drown on the lifeboat?

I don't mean to vent, but it bothered me that I actually found merit in his argument. If you step back and analyze rationally it doesn't make sense tohelp those who can't help themselves.

The other thread made me think of this discussion, People are a cancer, no matter how much you feed them. They will never be satisfied.

It is really bothering me that I agree with him now

Thoughts?

If I just got paid or somethin', I'd give some change to a poor person...other than that, I don't. I mean damn, I'm strugglin' too.

More times than not, if I help a homeless/poor person, I know their story before doing so. Or, at least, I try to. I do it way more often than I should.

I got into a conversation with some guy on the lightrail. He was pretty hilarious, so I tossed him a $5. He probably spent it on more alcohol, but I look uponit as paying them for a service.

I don't promote giving blindly to the poor. But if someone entertains me with a story, or at least cracks a few good jokes, it's whatever. I'm surethey appreciate getting talked to like a human a lot more than getting spat at and becoming victims of hail storms on a sunny day like they usually do.

Yes.

If I have any spare cash or change, I'll give it to them.

I also do a homeless ministry with my bible study group and we give out food and water to them.

It's a great feeling for me, helping out the less fortunate regardless if they are deserving or not. It's great to serve.

if you work and pay taxes, you are helping. part of your tax money is going to programs, that help the lower class. i.e financial aid, welfare, ebt.
which i personally am all for. for the record, i would consider myself lower class financially if that matters.

btw your friends analogy doesnt really hold weight, but bill o'reilly would love it

edit: giving a bum change is cool, but i think the op is talking about a nationwide or global scale...tax money could be spent better imo,
more job training for the homeless would be a good start

I give some change out every now and again, but times are hard for everybody. I'm just trying to feed my baby, put gas in my car, pay my rent, pay fordaycare, help my wife through dental school... All burdens they don't have to bear or have government assistance to help deal with. Some have legitimatereasons, but other made poor decisions that lead them to where they are. Bottom line, I JUST DON'T WANT TO END UP IN THEIR SITUATION. If I gave a dollar toeverybody who asked, I would have given away my electric bill or water bill. I will give food to a food drive or kid's toy drive though.

I occasionally give them a few bucks if I feel the need. About two weeks ago I saw this homeless guy limping with a sign. On his sign it said that he washomeless and got robbed a couple years ago and stabbed in his leg, and he limps because he couldnt get treatment for it. I felt horrible for this guy so I gavehim like $5

But nah seriously I used to give money when I first got to Pittsburgh, now I don't. If they are in need of money that bad for "food" I'll buyem somethin to eat. I went and bought this dude that was an ex war vet that was homeless two hotdogs and two fruit punch drinks this past summer. 1/2 of emuse the money for the same reason their homeless in the first place liquor or drugs.

The "poor" in Pittsburgh be a trip though. This one cat was sittin in front of a GNC askin for money when he had on some fresh white on whites

I'm like "My mans, I'm in college U should be givin MEmoney"

Only poor kids. Many (probably most) poor adults don't even try to better their situation, and the kids are usually a victim of this.

I hate the ones who stands around waiting, and then runs up to you and beg. Then when you give him some change, he got the nerve to say "That's all?

". Funny thing is, that happened to me at a gas station inthe summer. I asked for my change back since it "wasn't enough", and he goes.. "Oh nah man, it's cool.. I'll keep it".

I help the real unfortunate ones, the ones who got their stuff taken away by them from a wife/girlfriend, whatever. You know?

Not trying to get into this any further, because it'd be a long paragraph and i don't want to sit here typing all night.

depends on which poor we are talking about. Theirs the poor and trying and then theres the poor that gave up I could care less about the gave up. I tutor kidsat the library

depends.. since I see them on a daily if there homeless or crackheads.

I was at popeyes the other day some lady come up askin for change and I blew her off pretty rudely cus thats how you handle em around here or they pester youto death. My out of town friend didn't know what to do so he hits her with the change. when we come out she had went and got a bag of chips and vienaasausges. Since she did the right thing with the money (homeless) I gave her a dollar and a cig. I'll help the homeless cus sometimes people just hit a badspot in life and its hard to recover. I won't give a crackhead money (yes you can tell the difference) cus they probably put themselves in the positionthere in due to the addiction.

When I can see that they are really poor, yeah. But if I think I may be supporting their habit, nope.

ill give change to a person depending on the situation, you cant fall for the cheap trick " i aint got no job". dont bs me.

I help, but not in the general donate money to the bums down the street that will use the bread to buy beer.

I volunteer in charities and fund raisers. I also give clothes and unused stuff.
