So I was engaged in a conversation with some friends, and the discussion lead to talk about my designer belt.
Its NT so I'll keep things short, I was called 'materialistic'.
I replied with "I like material items, but am not materialistic person". (I was slightly offended, but it could have been because I was a littleintoxicated)

So NT, is it possible to like material items and not be materialistic?

Thanks for your time.

i need a new one btw

If I were to judge by your avy then yes I would think you were.

But it is possible to like to have things and not be "materialistic" in the negative sense. Do you appreciate the things you have, or the ability tohave them, do you "give back" so that others can also enjoy lifes gifts? Are the things you have actually important to you, or are they just a perk? Do you judge yourself, or others by the things they posses? If so then yes you are a materialistic person.

Absolutely.

You should only be called materialistic if you value material things more than the important stuff in life (family, friends, intellectualism,..etc) .

I mean....who doesn't like nice stuff?

This went well.

Lurkin, you know what's up, LOL

Thank you NT.

-EDIT, Grizzly, I think that was along the lines of what I was talking about. (No I do not value those items over family/friends)
Fanatic15 - Great points, and no I do not judge people by what they possess, that's why I dont think I'm materialistic.

I'm just saying Shallow and materialistic are related. for example if you will only date someone w/ money or who dresses a certain way that would make youboth shallow and materialistic. One doesn't negate the other in simpler terms.

If people are seeing you in this way, and that's not how you want to be perceived, then you might want to reevaluate some things.

One of the signs of a materialistic person is the exhibition of labels or distinct identifying qualities (Burberry check, red/green Gucci, etc.) with no senseof style or regard for modesty. Basically don't be a label !!@$*. Yes, some designers are nice, but you can abuse them. And usually the people who flashthem the most are the ones who can't afford it. It's a false status symbol and a desperate cry for attention. And those high end labels know thiscustomer exists so they keep making it, while the people who truly know what quality and style is will buy stuff from those same labels that doesn't havelogos plastered all over it.

It was actually only the first time this has happened, which got me thinking. I don't particularly flaunt the stuff, I own, my shirt wants tucked into mypants to 'show off' (as I would rather not make myself as a target, for whatever reason)
It was actually brought up by my friend.

But I see what you are getting at, and I respect you for the honesty. I'm trying to get my life 'on track' for future in devours, and this is agood way to start.

gotcha

Just because he likes nice things makes him materialistic?

IMO a materialistic person approaches life in somewhat of a hedonistic way. Basically this person just thinks about clothes etc. every part of the day andtries to pursue many pleasures.

I've been called materialistic because I like Jordan and other known brands. Excuse me for like the way Jordans look. I would love to buy other brands butthey don't make anything that really appeals to me. The new T-macs are hot though and may be purchased in the future.
