With the overuse of auto-tune, lack of creativity, etc., 2008 has been a VERY bad year for hip-hop. IMO, the two dudes (Kanye and Common) who you would expectto come with the heat towards the end of the year, both had sub-par efforts on their albums. These are the two guys who you would look at as being individualswho are on another level than their peers and would come through with work that is head and shoulders above everyone else. Is the direction of both Common andKanye a sign of things to come in hip-hop? Maybe things will change in 2009, but I feel like many artists got lazy with their craft (except for Nas'). You got some hungry cats out there like Cudi and Wale (who may or may not carry that torch), as well as some vets like Em and Dre who "might" bedropping new material...is there any reason to believe things will be different in the new year?

I don't understand what you mean by lack of creativity. It took balls to do albums like ye and common just made. Personally I think they're craftingnew styles and sub-genres of hip hop..

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm failing to see where the creativity was in U.M.C. Maybe on the last track "Everywhere," butthe album was rather "ordinary" for Common and lacked depth and the lyricism that we expect from him.

i dont think their efforts were sub-par..

2009 will be interesting.. im looking forward to newer artists though.. it seems that with the state of the record industry no one wants to push/develop newtalent and they're staying with well known artists..

only cd that stands out to me that im looking forward to is relapse.. F Detox .. im tired of waiting for that bs

I beg to differ, but to each his own. If that's how you see it then there's not much I can say to make you think otherwise.

I definitely feel that it wasn't a strong year, but there was plenty of good music that came out to keep the game alive and afloat, fromboth the new and upcomers to the established presences. There were plenty of albums that came and which I enjoyed:

Elzhi's The Preface
Nas' Untitled
Black Milk's Tronic
Q-Tip's The Renaissance
The Roots' Rising Down
88-Keys' The Death of Adam
The Game's LAX
Murs' Murs for President
Tip's Paper Trail
Wale's The Mixtape About Nothing
Termanology's Politics As Usual
Mickey Factz's The Leak Vol. 1: The Understanding & The Leak Vol. 2: The Inspiration
Bun's II Trill

I know there's plenty that I missed, but I was just trying to show that the bad music will almost always cover the good music with mud, not allowing themto shine through so to speak. I also don't think that one year can dictate how much success the next year will have, but we'll see.

Honestly, I'm a little embarrassed to say this but I've only heard the title song. I assumed most of the album sounded like that.

Good post. I particularly agree with what you said about the bad music covering up some of the good. I REALLY enjoyed Rising Down and Wale'sTMAN.

I was just disappointed in what Kanye and Common put out, because I expect better from them.

Add Evidence The Layover EP
to that list.

No doubt, I dig what you saying. You always expect the biggest names to uphold some sort of standard because that's what got them there inthe first place.

I haven't peeped that yet but I'll take your word for it since The Weatherman LP was straight. Probably give it a listen sometime this week..

I didnt like Common's album at all.

Actually, Make My Day is nice.

More becuase of Cee Lo though..

F what the next dude say, 2008 was a amazing year for music
808's, UMC, Sooner or later, the new fall out boy, the new GCH, all great albums, IMO there was little to no fail with any on the album I got this year.

I'm looking forward to Eminem's album and I still have hope for 50's Before I Self Destruct.

I thought 808 was okay...for what it was, Kanye for the most part succeeded.

Untitled was the best album though, IMO...

it makes me feel good to look in here and see hiphop heads discussing hiphop. i personally enjoyed both umc and 808s. common said himself when he was out herein the bay(on 106.1) that he wanted to do something different and make a recodr that they could play in the club and thats what he did. he went in the studiowith the neptunes and did work. let artists do them sometimes. i think both ye and common have earned that right. good looks yall on tha termanology shoutouts.
