Laney XIV or not, that nickname shouldn't be considered for that shoe. Why?
Even if MJ wanted to have more J's inspired by his HS colors, laneys are and will always be known as the retro + 5s. Like the black toe. When someonerefers to a J as black toes, what do you think they are referring to? The I's or XIVs? I would think the I's. That's why I hate reused nicknames.

you argued that the Laney Vs paid homage to the school based off the retro card, but what if that was the retro card for the XIV? would it make a differencethen? and if so are you saying that the retro card makes a difference in the nickname of the shoe?
we dont make nicknames based off the retro card, we make them off of their colorways and what they represent, eg.last shots, spacejam, bred, fire red
i know i dont have the reputation to have my word trusted as much as a moderaters, but i've been lurking long enough to know whats going on..

Laney 5s were called Laneys, right off the bat. It what, took 8 years for those XIV's to be nicknamed, "Laney?"
With that rule, let's call the OG Air Jordan II's, Italy II's. That nickname only took 21 years!

this is getting kinda silly. are the shoes officially called Laney's? NO. are they Laney colors? YES. whats being missed is the fact that nicknames give aadded flair to things. calling them "Laney's" sounds better, more attractive than "the blue and yellow 14's". (that also has blackand gray on them)

I don't recall anyone calling these the Laney XIVs, but now that you mention, it's hard not to believe that these were inspired by MJ's highschoolcolors.

And people are reaching with the Laney Vs. Honestly, at that time every retro had the same retro card of its series with the exception of Laney Vs. They hadthere own specific retro card, those and the Olympic VIIs are the only shoes to get their own retro cards. So from that you can clearly see why they are LaneyVs. Spacejams were made only for the movie and weren't even released with the OGs, Olympic VIs & VIIs clearly made for the Olympics (were worn in theOlympics). City series Xs, all based on the teams which city they were released in. Every other nickname (not including the 07-08 stuff) has to do with thecolorway except those shoes.

They are the laney colours, yes, and in that case your friend was right, but I don't think you two bet they were the same colours, just what the shoes werecalled.
Personally these are one of the best looking jays in my book, and maybe your $50 will go to buying a pair yourself.
