NikeTalk Essentials: Mariah Carey (completed pg. 6)

Okay. I had to flip it to a different genre. Just had to.

For those that don't know, here it is:

In an attempt to get all of the users of the music forum involved in a single thread, I thought of all these "Essential" type compliations that my parents buy for artists like Billy Joel and Elton John. They are basically "Best of" 2 disc albums for the given artist.

We'll keep a thread open for about a week before moving on to the next artist. We'll attempt to reach consensus as to what the top 20 songs by each artist/group. I'm thinking of making the single artist total only 15 songs as opposed to 20 for a group that will typically have solo artist songs included as well.

After the end of each thread, we will start a thread with an archive of each "Essential" tracklisting. That way, we can always refer to that thread should people say, "What are good song by 'Artist X'?" If some people want to contribute an "album cover" that would add some legitimacy to the archive thread.

We'll see how this works. Obviously we'll have to make some adjustments while we go though this and only allow one "Essential" thread in the forum at a time. I will also take suggestions as to what the next artist thread should be.

Also, when making justifications on what should or should not be included, try to word out your justifications as opposed to "Because I like it more." Why do you like it more? What about it makes it better (or worse) than another song?

My only suggestion that should be and will be on the list is "Hero".

Why?

Just listen to the song. Check out Mariah's range. She demonstrates her ability to span numerous octives of sound.

It's the once song that makes me say, "Damn, she's one of the best. Ever."

defintely not the best choice for the 3rd 'essentials' post IMO

could of went a different direction R&B wise. I dont even consider Carey and r&b artist.

If you have an issue with the Essentials choice, stay out of thread.

If you can't stay out of the thread, I can keep you out myself. You're not going to like every artist I choose to make an essentials list for.

Mariah Carey is the most prolific female vocalist of our generation.

If you're too young to understand that (and it's obvious that some of you are mad young) then this thread isn't for you.

And I realized that I mixed up "Hero" and "Without You". "Without You" is the song that should be included. Her range on that song is ridiculous.

I was actually going to do Whitney before Mariah. But the fact that the majority of Whitey's classics were put out before a lot of these kids were born made me think otherwise.

I mean, the Wu-Tang Essentials thread essentially went wood because not many people were familiar with their catalog. If Wu-Tag precedes some of these kids, think what classic Whitney is. It'd be a thread with you and me. That's it.
