since there has been an increasing amount of computer questions lately, and my previous post in the archives was deleted i decided that i would once again help those in need and post programs that i've used and have also received good reviews from sites like www.cnet.com and www.pcworld.com.

let's start with windows fixes that can help maintain and fix your computer.

slow startup? reduce the amount of programs running at startup on your computer. go to the start menu and select run. then type "msconfig". once there, go to startup and uncheck all the programs you don't need.

secondly, computer slowdown can be caused by an overload of data on your computer. go to the start menu> control panel> add/remove programs. delete the programs that you do not need or use.
third, go back to the control panel> performance & maintenance> free up space you hard disk. run it and proceed to check anything that applies.
after doing that, go back into performance & maintenance then select "rearrange items on hard disk..." (run it overnight since defragging your computer can take awhile.

some of the programs listed below can be found all in the same place in the is Google Pack. check there first before going to all of the sites listed below or you can simply read the review on them and see which ones you want.

Firefox- GREAT web browser with lots of customization. it's much safer than internet explorer and comes with tabbed browsing. you don't know what you're missing with I.E. until you've used Firefox.

ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAMS
although none of these will eliminate all spyware by itself, using all of them in conjunction will eliminate virtually any traces of it on your computer. be sure to update these programs often so that they are up to date with the latest spyware threats.

spyware are programs that run in the background of your computer that allow people to see what you are doing. they can also significantly slow down your computer.

Ad-Aware- perhaps the best of the bunch. run this one first.

Spybot- Search & Destroy

Microsoft AntiSpyware- updates itself automatically while also giving you the option of deleting your tracks for any online enabled program on your computer. BEWARE: it requires an authenticated version of windows to install.

ANTIVIRUS
viruses are most commonly transfered through .exe files, usually sent in emails or instant messages. DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS WITHOUT RUNNING A VIRUS SCAN OF IT FIRST.

AVG Antivius (Free Edition)- very good free antivirus, but as with most free things, there are drawbacks. it is not nearly as comprehensive as the paid versions, but it works quite well at detecting most viruses and eliminating them.

Microsoft One Care- GREAT program that also updates itself automatically everyday and runs at night while you sleep. it runs in the background while monitoring what programs are trying to access the internet and whether or not they are authorized to do so. it will also run a diagnostic test of your system and will tune it up every 4 weeks. in addition, it has the capability to back up your files onto cd as long as your computer is capable of doing so. as with the Microsoft Antivirus, you are required to have a valid version of windows installed on your computer.

Panda Active Scan- online virus scanner. it won't delete viruses found, but it will help you to find out if there is anything attacking your computer so you can take the proper steps to eliminate them.

COMMUNICATION
obviously, most people use AIM in the states and MSN in the rest of the world, but here's two useful programs to supplement those.

Trillian- very good IM programs that integrates AIM, MSN Messenger, ICQ and Yahoo Messenger. very clean interface with good customization. you can put the person's name on the list instead of their IM name as well as put active groups into tabs. in addition, you can have more than one name signed on at a time for each type of service. BEWARE: if you sign on with more than one name, the contacts will become merged together and can be a pain to separate again.

Google Talk- able to open this program with your gmail account or download to your computer and use if you aren't using your browser. very simplistic program that takes up minimal space for those working with slow computers. it also (like most IM programs now) comes with the ability to talk from one computer to another.

Skype- common program used now to talk to people all over the world. very good sound quality with the ability to conference call and video conference.

SAFETY AND SECURITY
a firewall is one of the best things you can do to secure your system. a hardware firewall is the best you can have such as a router, but since not everyone can have one or has access, a software firewall is the next best thing. windows has a built in firewall, but it does not let the user know what is happening on their system.

Zone Alarm- active firewall that keeps the user well informs about what is coming in and out of their computer.

il System wiper- eliminates your internet history as well as history of various programs on your computer.

Eraser- writes over data up to 32x with random data to ensure that most forensics programs cannot view data you've eliminated.

PRODUCTIVITY

Open Office- free alternative to MS Office. offers many of the features that office does. my favorite of which is the ability to convert a caps locked section back to normal text since i know we've all run into that situation once or twice.

Word Web- dictionary right on your computer. useful to people who aren't sure about a word or simply don't have internet access at a given time. very useful in minor crunches.

Google Earth- view a satellite map of anywhere in the world. useful for visual directions, or simply finding where the nearest gas station

Great post

As far as msconfig, doesn't it only come natively on XP and Win98 (not sure about before that). For Win2k user, you can download it for free, though.

Also, CRC, have you used the new beta of Windows Defender? Opinions on it vs MS antispyware?

Great post and Info

my 2 cents

AVG is outstanding, you just have to constantly update it. Also you can't have another A-V program running on you computer or it will lower the effectiveness of the other. You can have as many Anti-Spy programs as you like though. AVG is much, much better than McAffee or Norton(trash). Honestly I think it the best. Check around the Web it gets great reviews from other users.

Don't use the following

Anti -Spy
McAffee- This is a totally useless program. You computer could be crawling with it it won't find a thing. It will find tons of usefull and nearly vital programs which you will be in trouble if you kill. It takes longer than a Virus scan to run and it won't find a singel bad program, or tracking bug. It updates constanly with no change unless to find another needed program doing a legit and important task you would be a fool to delete.

Cleaner
McAffe -One of the dumbest programs you could ever use. It only deletes things you need much like there spy crap. Now it will delete your History and Recycle bin for you as if you couldn't do that yourself in 10 seconds. McAffee should stick to Virus Scans.
Tell me I can no longer fly.........I want you to. - MJ,97

i'll add a couple things i use (useful for windows xp):

tweak ui: it's made available by microsoft and lets you change all those little things you always wanted to (like getting recycle bin off the desktop).

hmmm, actually, that's about it. if anyone wants tips for reformatting and partitioning and all that, i can answer some questions since i just went through that proces...

use gmail and firefox for email and internet.

I'll add to the post...

Couple of apps I use not already mentioned:

CCcleaner.gif

CCleaner

Great to free up memory and increase performance

Quote:
CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!
Quote:
Trend Micro Anti-Spyware for the Web is a free online tool that checks computers for spyware, and helps remove any infections found. When the detection process is complete, the tool will display a report describing the result including which if any, spyware were detected, and prompt you before the removal process.

diskeeper.gif

Diskeeper 10 Defragmenter

Your system should come with a defragmenter, but this one is great & very detailed.

Quote:
Disk fragmentation causes crashes, slowdowns, freeze-ups and even total system failures. The number one reason for performance bottlenecks is fragmentation. Even the best hardware will eventually slow down unless the drive is defragmented daily.

Panda Platinum Antivirus 2006

My AV. I like the fact that it updates itself several times daily; pretty much catches everything that could be caught.

Quote:
The new Panda Platinum 2006 Internet Security offers the most effective protection against viruses, spyware, hackers, phishing, spam and other Internet threats , so you enjoy the Internet with peace of mind. To guarantee your security, it offers a double layer of protection against unknown viruses and intruders through its TruPrevent Technologies.

Whenever a new virus or threat appears, traditional antivirus programs and security solutions take hours to update, leaving your computer temporarily vulnerable.Latest generation viruses and other threats take advantage of this gap to infect thousands of computers, whether they have antivirus protection or not, as happened with Sasser and MyDoom.

The solution is TruPreventTM Technologies: they intelligently analyze the behavior of files and programs, blocking those that try to damage your PC.As a result, they provide a double layer of protection, in addition to the antivirus protection, even before it has been updated.

Motorola PhoneTools

I use Motorola Phone Tools to organize my Razr, specifically picture management and custom ringtones. With PhoneTools, I get to make high quality ringtones (64 kbps) from my music library and I even put full songs on my phone (since it doesn't have iTunes). Only works for Motorola users.

Quote:
Motorola PhoneTools and your Motorola handset turn your PC into a true virtual office. Access the Internet, send and receive text messages, read e-mails and manage your calendar or phonebook from just about anywhere. Improved multimedia center functionality even lets you edit and enhance images, video files and audio files and save them to a compatible handset.

Mobile17.com

Mobile 17 is a free service that allows you to send ringtones, pictures, videos, or .gifs to your phone, depending on your phones capabilities. You can pay to get the multimedia instantly, but the free version makes you wait in line to receive your data (I recommend waiting - the wait is never as long as listed).

WinRAR

WinZip

WinRAR and WinZip are compression applications that allow you to pack large amounts of files into one folder, which is great for emailing information, saving data to storage devices, etc. If you receive a file in .rar or .zip form, you need one of these apps to open it. Most e-pirates should already have these.

Quote:
WinRAR is a powerful compression tool with many integrated additional functions to help you organize your compressed archives

WinRAR puts you ahead of the crowd when it comes to compression. By consistently creating smaller archives, WinRAR is often faster than the competition. This will save you disc space, transmission costs AND valuable working time as well.

WinRAR is also ideal, if you are sending data through the web. Its 128 bit password encryption and its authenticated signature technology will give you the peace of mind you have been looking for

Quote:
WinZip, the original and most popular compression utility for Windows, is a powerful and easy-to-use tool that quickly zips and unzips your files to conserve disk space and greatly reduce e-mail transmission time. WinZip 10.0 is available as Standard or Pro.

Very good post. Already download CCleaner and going to give it a try.

Question

Quote:
third, go back to the control panel> performance & maintenance> free up space you hard disk. run it and proceed to check anything that applies.

I couldn't find Performance & Maintenance under Control Panel. I'm running XP if that matters.

^
Switch to "Category View" and it should be there.
It's just a shortcut to the disk defragmenter and disc cleanup.

For people who want to speed up their computer at the expense of graphics, right click my computer- advanced- performance- settings. You can uncheck what you like. Me personally, i have everything unchecked.

Also, there are services that are uneeded that you can disable, (or set to manual instead of automatic)
Run(in start menu) "services.msc". To the right there are the list of services. WARNING- SOME SERVICES ARE NEEDED BY XP TO OPERATE!!!!!!!!!! USE AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION!!!!!!!!!!!!.
This is a website that will help guide you on what to disable. I did it last week and it works like a charm.

Last but not least tweakxp
Go crazy
its a little more advanced (ie regestry tweaks) but no hard at all once you get the hang of it. The thing i love about XP is that there are some many ways to get great performance out of it.

What is the best anti-virus software out there to buy?

A lot of Anti-virus goes to personal opinion.

I find that Norton is a resource hog (takes up system resources). I have also found that it canbe very hard to install, uninstall, and upgrade. Part of that may be my overwhelming bias against Symantec products though.

I use Trend Micro, I always have, and it has always worked, and worked well. I use their products at work, so I am familiar with the way they work, which also leads to bias.

As far as Nod32, Macafee, Panda, and all the rest, I can't speak on them.

The main thing with AV software is to help protect your computer, but even so it only helps, it is not a cure all. CRC listed free AV products above that from what I've seen do a great job. That may change, it may not, but there is no reason to pay for something, when the free version does just as well. Unless you just want to spend money, get a free one and use your 49.99 of whatever a year for other things.

A couple of other things,

Diskeeper is basically just a more full featured version of the defragmenter that comes with windows. The same people wrote both of them, the one that comes with your sytem was just written to Bill's specs. Diskeeper works faster, and has a few more features, but the average person doesn't need to pay for it.

Be careful when doing things like tweaking your registry, disabling services, etc. This can really screw up your PC. An ounce of prevention is worth a puond of cure.

Of all the antivirus programs ive been through, Kaspersky is the best.

That plus your occasional online scan from other av's, spybot and adaware, never had a virus in my life. All it takes to keep your pc clean is minimum effort, people dont understand that.
don't even remember saying that .....

What about for a mac?

Browsers:
Firefox. Same thing as the PC version.

Camino. Similar to Firefox, but even better. Mac only.

OmniWeb. Very cool browser. Mac only.

Opera. Good free browser.

Chat/IM:

Adium. Freeware, supports ICQ/AIM/MSN/Yahoo and more

Proteus. My preferred program. Now free, supports the same things as Adium, but I like the interface a bit more.

Misc.:
Quicksilver. Hard to describe, but its incredible. Redefines how you think about opening and interacting with documents and programs.

Delicious Monster. Very cool program for cataloging books, CDs, DVDs, video games. If you have an iSight, you can scan the barcodes and it will automatically pull info from Amazon. Wicked awesome.
