Down These Mean Streets by Piri Thomas (story of a black Puerto Rican growing up in NY, dude had a wild and crazy experience)
The Alienist(early 1900s detective book which shows the early incorporation of psychology into police work)
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Klay (making it to a movie atm. Book about cousins or friends who worked on comics in the 1930s and 1940, can'tremember, which one left Europe to try to get his younger brother out of Europe during WWII)
Black Boy by Richard Wright (read it for a class this year, really liked how he gave a visual of what it was like growing up and being poor and black in thesouth in the late 1800s. I'm not black, but it gives me a better visual than history books have of how bad it really was.)
