TUSTIN - A former athletic trainer at Tustin High School has been arrested on suspicion she had a sexual relationship with an athlete at the school for about a year, authorities said today.

School officials became aware of the relationship Friday after they found images on the student's phone believed to be sent by the 23-year-old trainer, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Hope Jacoby, of San Juan Capistrano, was taken into custody by deputies at the school Friday, the last day of classes before the winter break.

Investigators believe Jacoby had sex with the male athlete on several occasions, including at her San Juan Capistrano home and her car, Amormino said. The case is still under investigation.

Jacoby worked at the school for about a year and worked with several athletes in different sports, Amormino said. Shortly after she began working at the school, police allege, the relationship began. Investigators believe there may be additional victims.

Authorities would not say what sport the male student participated in because it might divulge his identity, but he was described as being 14 to 17 years old.

Jacoby was employed with ACIC Physical Therapy, an Irvine-based company which the Tustin Unified School District contracted, said Mark Eliot, spokesman for the district.

Before she was hired in September 2007, Jacoby was submitted to fingerprinting and a background check like other district employees, which she passed, Eliot said.

Attempts to reach the company for comment were unsuccessful.

"I'm sorry, I don't know anything about that and there's no one here who can help you," said an unidentified employee at the company's Irvine office who then hung up the phone.

In late November, Jacoby submitted a letter of resignation to the district, stating that Friday would be her last day because she intended to further her education, Eliot said. Before the day was over, she was booked at Women's Central Jail in Santa Ana.

She was released Saturday after posting $100,000 bail, Amormino said.

Amormino said authorities became aware of the relationship after a student saw text message images on the victim's phone. Investigators believe those images were sent by Jacoby.

Amormino would not comment on what the images were.

After the student talked to school administrators about the images Friday, the male athlete and Jacoby were interviewed by school officials, Eliot said. Deputies were called to the school when officials found there may have been an illegal relationship.

"That's when they found everything," Eliot said. "The school took immediate action."

Investigators believe Jacoby had sex with the minor at her home and several locations in the Orange and Tustin area, including inside her car while it was parked near an elementary school, Amormino said.
