Im in my senior year at high school and am in some engineering classes right now, although im not completely positive i want to be one.
Some of it intrigues me while some stuff pulls me away from it.

Just seeing if there are any engineers on here who like what they do. What kind of engineer are you?
Any advice on what KIND of engineer to be or not to be would also be appreciated.

Thanks for any help.

Say no to biomedical on the undergraduate level. I think by far electrical still has the best job market right now. Mechanical, industrial, and chemical alsohave some jobs available.

Overall though...the job market in 2009 sucks...

lol @ Enigneers

There are many types of engineers. Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electircal, etc. Just depends on what specifically interests you.

im computer science major with concentration in software engineering, basically i design software, the way an architect designs buildings

My teacher was actually telling us how many jobs are opening with engineering.
He said its becoming one of the most needed jobs as of right now.

I know there are many MANY diffrent kinds of engineers.
Just trying to figure out what looks fun so i dont hate my job and of course has decent pay with it.

I'm an architect major and software boggles my mind. How do you design something that physically doesn't exist?

And the job market for homegrown engineers is great. America as a country is very poor in math so as a result we import most of engineers from other countries.Great field to be in if you can handle it. If you're not sure about it I would forget it though, you really have to want to do it.

It's true. I live in Huntsville, AL and it is supposedly one of the few cities that isn't really feeling the effects of this so calledrecession. They are tons of engineers everywhere, I go to one of the better engineer schools, we are one of the fastest growing city in the south, and we aresupposed to be getting around 50k more residents in the next 3-5 years. A good majority will be engineers

Yea thats exactly why im trying to decide quick. If i do decide to do it i gotta go all in for it.
I started taking the classes junior year so i think im set up well to go in for the occupation.
Im in Pre-calculus now if that matters.

Yea depending on where you are, the job market is different. Overall however, it sucks. Just check Monster or any other job search site and see for yourself.

computer/electrical engineering have the most job opportunities right now...if you don't know what discipline of engineering you want to do but definitelywant to be an engineer, usually the first year of college consists of different types of engineering classes. So you can definitely go from there.

I studied computer engineering btw.

I was thinking more electrical. No computer, and no mechanical for me, thats for sure.
Good to hear electrical is open.

lol@ Electircal.

i was an electrical engineer undergrad, and if you don't have your stuff together, and aren't focused it really isn't for you. Its atleast an hourextra of study from other majors.

I didnt even know what an engineer was in my last year of High School, but here i am and i love it.

I can definitely recommend engineering and my advice is to go into a form of engineering based on your favorite subject. Chemistry is my favorite subject soI'm in Engineering Chemistry which is unlike chemical engineering as it is more theoretical based.

Pretty much anything you can major in for sciences you can do for engineering

I'm an EE, job title is Electrical Construction Engineer...

My job is growing on me, especially since I had a love for construction work before I started my gig...

Not so much of the complex math involved in what I do now, but prepare to battle programming, calculus, differential equations, and a lot of electrical theoryin your studies...

Engineering is a broad field, so have a plan of what kind of work you want to do in the future and progress towards that while your in college...

I'm majoring in aerospace engineering. Classes are tough, you will need a solid math and physics background, and be prepared to accept the fact that yourbest may actually not be enough (Thanks Georgia Tech). However, it's the passion that motivates you so just keep it up and you will reap the benefits. Asfor the job markets, there should be many more opportunities in the near future due to a large number of aerospace engineers that are planning to retire.

What are the things that intrigue you about engineering, and what are the things that pull you away from it?

Overall, there are going to be jobs available in the engineering department. Find what engineering is related to what "intrigues" you based on thematerial, and go from there. When you focus on that major in college, see how you like it for the first few classes you take, and if you enjoy it, pursue it.If not, find another major.

I'm an Aerospace Engineering major, 4th year now. That's how a lot of my buddies did it, and for the most part they have found the engineering thatmost interests them.

Well the thing that draws me away from it i guess is my own conscious.
I dont know if im "smart" enough i guess you could say.
Im not dumb though, it just seems like if you want to be an engineer you need to be super advanced with math and all these programs and stuff like that.
I have a C in pre Calc. but i get the idea i need an A to be an engineer.

In the Engineering classes im taking im just up to par on whats going on with whats being taught. While theres those other kids who are always way ahead ofeverything. Thats what makes me say those kids are gonna be the engineers because i cant do what they do.

The main thing i need to know is if Engineering is more hard work or more brains. Will a C in pre calc get me to where i wanna be. Things like that.

You have to try different things and eventually you will realize which one you like best. I've been in engineering classes since my sophomore year in HighSchool (I'm now a senior), I've been told by many I am very talented, but for the most part I don't really like it.

What I like to do is design houses, when I'm working on other things I'm bored and not truly motivated. If you don't like it don't do it, thereare too many people that have jobs they hate.

I'm a junior in HS and went to an intro to engineering camp this past summer. Not really sure if I want to pursue a career with some form of engineering ora medical field.

This doesn't make any sense. It's all subjective...
Of course it is, i used it to drive the point home of how difficult a major it is. Stop thinking so hard.

i wanted to be an engineer last year

but i actually went and saw what i had to be doing in classes

and now im a senior and im thinking of accounting

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering but work in the biomedical realm. I'd say Electrical Engineering is a good field but its imperative you knowwhich one of the subfields you want to be involved in so you can gain as much internship experience as possible. Within EE you have the subfields of SYSTEMS,COMMUNICATIONS, POWER GENERATION, SEMICONDUCTOR DEVELOPMENT (which equires tons of Chemistry and Physics) as well as Biomedical (though this subfield can fallunder mechanical as well).
