Employers & College Admissions checking Myspace/Facebook pages?

I've heard about this existing on the news and via word of mouth, but have never heard of it actually being used. Has anybody dealt with this? Or, doesanybody work for a company where they do this? Or, work in a company's HR department and actually go around checking them?

I imagine a large majority of young people have one or the other (or both). However, I think most of them keep their pages private. That is, only their friendscan view the contents.

I'm not particularly worried about this for myself because I keep mine locked down and private, but I was just curious about how likely it is for anemployer/college admission group to view your page. Also, do you worry about what Googling your name may bring up? I noticed NT threads coming up in somesearches

even if you make it private there are ways around that. especially on facebook where people can tag you in their pictures and you pop up. this new trend has meparanoid though for real, i want to be a lawyer and maybe one day go into politics and i swear im scared some stupid picture from junior year of college willpop up. i dont take pictures a lot myself but any time i say that around friends they are always like we got a really good one of such and such and i just smh.

I saw a report on this on the news one time, 60 minutes maybe

I deleted a few things and stopped adding random stuff

I deleted my Facebook 2 days ago so im good, after a while u start to realize that these social network cites have alot of information on you. It got toodisturbing for me

I've heard of it but it seems like much ado about nothing. You can't find my myspace by using my government name as is the case with most people, andusing email address won't work either since like most people, I have a personal email address and a business one I use for applications and that sort ofthing.

Try setting it to where users can't see photos that you've been tagged in. It will prevent people from being able to go through all the tagged photosof you (the "tagged by others" album). However, they can go through the user who tagged you's profile and look at pictures there... Notfull-proof, but it's a decent, and simple, measure to take.

Myspace is pretty private, as long as you have it set to private.

It makes you wonder if employers/admissions see a private page if they think that you're hiding stuff? Perhaps it would be better to leave the page open, but make albums with questionable material set to private?

Folks shouldn't be posting their stupid business on pages like Myspace anyways. It's common sense. It's like adding current/daily updates to yourbackground check. I assume jobs would start doing that so I keep such available information normal. It's a good thing I don't post irrelevant crap likethat anyways. The internet is a social tool these days. I won't be surprised if it becomes second nature for such companies to add this on their agendawhen it comes to "background checking"

In high school last year this got A LOT of people in trouble. Football players/Cheerleaders in particular.
Dumb people would put up self incriminating pictures. This cheerleader wore the mascot uniform to a Halloween party and since it's school property it was abig deal.
They called us into the office one by one and showed us the pictures on myspace. I only stayed in the principals office for literally 5 minutes cause Idon't drink but everyone else stayed for at least an hour.
Needless to say we lost the district game cause all our players were suspended from the game.

I had 2 interceptions though.

It really is that easy
Example: If you are not 21 try not having a drink in your hand for the profile pic
If you have a girl, don't have a picture of you making out with 3 females....

Social networks should increase your chances of landing a job, not decrease them.

Real talk. Point blank, straight to the damn point. Justlike how I see freakin little high schoolers posting weapons or paraphernalia on their MySpaces/Facebooks. Why? That's just like throwing up a sign,"Hey I'm cool and doing illegal activities. Law enforcement, come right over anytime....!"

exactly, why would you have illegal stuff availiable to see to anyone anyway??

if you're dumb enough to leave your profile public, use the same e-mail on your resume that is linked to your myspace/facebook, and have pictures of youpuking on your best friend while nose first in coke then yes you deserve to be discrimintaed against in employment oppourtunities

Like I sad in another thread my accounts on social networks either have fakes names or are private, and I'm not tagged on anyone's pictures and even ifI was you'd have to know who I was affiliated with to see them.

Anything public on the internet should be fair game. Don't put things on the net you don't want people to know.
