So I tore my meniscus monday night playin basketball and missed all my classes wednesday. (I only have MWF classes) I have a doctors note and everything. Iemailed all my professors Tuesday evening to tell them I wouldn't be in class and that I'd bring my assignments (if any were due) on Friday. All myprofessors wished me luck in the snow and attatched exactly what we'd be covering in class EXCEPT my stat professor. This is the email he sent:

Looks like you've used up all your excuses for the semester. The knee I can understand. Stuff happens. Of course, youhad a week to work on this and you choose to wait until the day before it was due.

The rest of this is just really lame and tells me you don't pay attention in class very much. I'll talked aboutneeding Minitab for these assignments several times. Were you listening?

OK. You can bring the homework to class Friday. The password for the quiz will be_______. Also due Friday by the start ofclass. I was going to go over the quiz in class today. Now I can't.

I expect this to be the last time we have a conversation like this. In fact, I am certain of it.

Good Luck.

We use a PC only based program for homework, and apparently quizzes. I had to wait until Mondays class to take notes on things I needed for both and hurt myknee that night. I was in the hospital for the majority of Tuesday and didn't put it high on my priority list to hobble into the lab and do them both. Isthis email justified?

CLIFF NOTES*

  • Hurt knee Monday
  • Missed classes Wednesday
  • Prof sends me this rude email
  • I have a doctors note excusing me until Friday
UPDATE***
Ok so I talked to the professor today after class, he said that his email was like that because of the hundreds of kids he gets alwayslooking for a handout and he assumed I was one of them. When I came in with my brace and crutches he seemed kind of shocked. So I was like "I'm sorryfor the tone of the last email I sent, I was really frustrated at the time and your email just kinda added to it. I've never been one to look for specialtreatment and I REALLY appreciate you keeping the quiz open for me" He said it was no problem at all, and to "keep up the great work" as hehanded me back my homework with a 15/15.

This may not have been the way to handle it, but it somehow worked out. He now knows my name, knows I pay attention in his class, and knows I'm not aslacker. Guess I caught a break

not if it was a singular instance...but sounds like you already had issues with him before.

either that... or he's just a grump.

and he can still review for the quiz.. he doesn't have to wait for you.

Well it's only been a couple weeks into class and I have all the extra credit points he's allowed, and have a perfect score on the firsthomework/quiz so I don't think it's me slacking or anything. He seemed like a cool dude in class, who knows.

I think he meant he didn't wanna go over it because of the possibility for me to get the answers from someone else

come on now, this is college fam, professors dont really care about why you didnt do the homework or why you werent in class.

you just have to handle your business, why would you expect your professors to care anyways

I just hit him back with a little polite/e-thug so either he responds or we see how he feels Friday.

I waited until the last day because you went over things that
I needed to know for the homework/quiz on Monday. Yes, I
should have completed it on Tuesday but I just took a one day
vacation to ReadyCare...I see where that's lame.

I understand that under the homework assignments it says "you
will need minitab" I just didn't and still don't see that
under the quizzes. But I'll also chalk that up the my lack of
listening in class, like you said.

I appreciate you re-opening the quiz for me, but you gotta
understand that I couldn't very well hobble into the lab and
complete these things on minitab because I was in ReadyCare
for the majority of the night, and to my understanding that's
what the Dr.'s note was for.

Naw it's not like that, I'm a senior...I know. I just also know that if I don't give them a heads up they're gonna think I'mjust dippin class and not gettin my stuff done ya know? I'd rather send em a quick email letting them know WHY I'm not getting it done since it's apretty decent excuse I think

That may be true, but I don't wanna get bullied by an Assistant Professor for something that was out of my control. I was more than polite in my firstemails and even said "if you can't re-open the quiz I'll just take a 0 on it even though I have a doctors note"

May be wishful thinking but professor or not, you should give the amount of respect you expect to get in return. If this affects my grade, I have all theemails on file to take to the math department.

but the thing is he can affect on your grade, you have no effect on him. But i guess you could blow a miniature issue into a big deal by showingthe emails to the math department. your choice tho

like someone said...this is college...they don't care...some do...most probably don't...if you were willing to take a zero why get smart after healready agreed to re-up for you? he may have gotten smart but he was gonna still let you take it so just bite the bullet...

Shouldn't have responded the way you did...A simple "thanks" would be enough....be the better man...

He really can't though, the quizzes are online and the grades are automatic. The homework is the same 5 questions everyone gets so he kind ofHAS to grade fairly. I never said I was gonna take em to the department, but if he starts messing with me because I stood my ground...it could be a problem

man just move on. whether he was tryna bully you or whatever he kinda has the upper hand. i'm not saying let him just talk crazy to ya but yougotta learn to pick ya battles and this shouldn't be one of em.

well....that was a dumb reply.

your give respect/get respect may be great for you...but they don't apply when there is a difference in power levels.

Touche. Probably didn't respond the right way, but I looked him up on ratemyprof.com before that and it kinda got me heated that he's made a lot ofrude remarks and made a lot of students feel stupid. Just didn't wanna be in the same boat without saying my peace. I plan on talkin to him after class andsee where he was coming from and let him know where I was coming from.

I feel better regardless of what you guys think might have been the right way to handle it, but your opinions made it clear that I do need to speak with him.

You may feel better now, but we'll see how you feel about your grade at the end of the semester.
