been lurking this thread for a long time, finally have something now so I'll share:
graduated in 2012 with at B.A in Finance and one internship under my belt.
Wasted my grace period chasing govt jobs and getting denied, even tho I was told by a current govt employee that govt
was showing preference for veterans and people with previous govt experience, I had neither but I was stubborn and thought I would get it anyway.
Once that grace period was over I realized it was crunch time because Sallie doesn't play, then had no success applying for private sector jobs.
filled out about 70 apps but due to my unemployment I was getting passed over & overlooked, even for jobs I was def qualified for, I later learned companies didn't want to hire people with large unemployment gaps, they think your not productive even if you've been diligently searching, they'll take more recent grads or people who are currently employed in some capacity over you, and the longer the gap the more people you have to compete with pissed me off
ended up being unemployed for 1 year and 5 months
Found a temp agency by accident, they got me a 30 day temp as an office assistant at an Insurance Company.
the manager there liked me work ethic so he extended my temp to 3 months and bumped me up to doing Underwriting Assistant duties.
the last Friday of my temp, I planned to ask for an offer, manager surprised me that Tuesday by saying he wanted to give me an offer
Signed off on it today, Junior Underwriter $45k + benefits and annual bonus and many other perks.
Wanted more but Its a start so I'll take it, plus there's a lot of room to grow and advance with them so Ill make the most of it
feels good man been waiting a long time
I'd suggest looking for good temp agencies if you're having trouble getting your foot in the door, especially if you have a long block of unemployment like I did
the temps saved my life lol now to save and get out my parents crib again, tasted freedom before, will be glad when I have it again
Good stuff man.
