You need to develop an effective cover letter....besides complementing your resume it allows you to sell yourself to the employer who is looking at not only a heap of candidates but candidates who perennially have every asset you think is why they should hire you. you cover letter should max out at 5 paragrahs (1.5) intro/personal philosphy. educational experience, work experience, tangential skills that speak to the position, closeout. The resumes without a cover letter are the last ones I look at because the format will be the same and there's nothing to parse out the candidate.
To touch on this I was shocked by how many people I knew that were trying to find new jobs that did not have cover letters. You can really use the same one over and over. They're a total miss or make thing from what I know, a bad one can ruin you, and a good one only slightly helps/doesnt at all, but I've heard too many stories from people who hold HR positions that while they dont read the cover letter if they see a submission without one they skip it.
I made a generic draft of the cover letter that I use for my apps and gave it to all my boys, IDK if it'll help but it I'll post it anyways.
