For those of you just looking for some fast, decent cash, look into bar-backing positions at your local bars/lounges/clubs.

I moved out to NYC three months ago and I work at a trendy hipster type restaurant and lounge and make about $500 in 3 nights of work.

It's just setting up the bar (juices/ limes/beers, etc.) keeping the place neat during your shift, then breaking down and cleaning the bar. I also think you've got an easier "in" than being a server at a restaurant since you really can get put on like that by the bartender. A lot of bartenders in this city bounce from gig to gig, but if I ever were to leave my spot now, I have about 10 bartender connects who I can call up right now and get a quick position at other establishments. It's tiring and really isn't all that much fun (I'd rather bartend) but for quick cash it gets the job done and it's a night job so it doesn't really interrupt your other pursuits other than leaving you fatigued into the next day.

no shade, no offense...but unless you copped a felony, how can you not get a gig w/in a 3-4 year period?  Are you actually applying? resume sucks? I'd be more than willing to help any NTer who sends me a resume to help improve it, or give advise to any who are a little lost in life...my PM is open, pause.

Still have my heart set on moving to a big city e.g. Houston, Atlanta, L.A., Charlotte, or a different region/coast. What's the minimum salary you would consider taking for an out of state job (no relocation assistance)? My guess is 40K would justify the move.

Depends on what you do and the cost of living difference imo

Depends on the city how much I want to live will depend on how I will take. But I thinking 50k depending on my profession. If it is a city after grad school I am thinking of a much higher number

$40k would be really rough in Los Angeles. My first job after college was around $50k and it wasn't much after taxes, especially since I claim single and zero.

The same amount would fair much better in rising cities with high paying jobs like Houston and ATL.

This is why I'm looking at leaving LA even if it's for a short while. Homes in average areas can hit $500k easily and these are 1200-1500 sq ft places.

Folks who make low $100k range is just living comfortably, not even in the lavish zone.

Well, I'm in the mental health/ education field so 40K isn't asking for much imo. A non-profit in Atlanta reached out to me but it's 25-30K base salary + commission. Did 2 Skype interviews with a mental health agency in Santa Clara County, Cali but the salary was no higher than 40K starting. I may be better exploring my college alumni network and see if I can land some jobs/cobtacts in my desired locations or try landing a university job that pays 45-50K.

Depends on what you do and the cost of living difference imo

Like you should get your worth when it comes to work but at the same time don't ignore bills and experience that can come with a non ideal job

been lurking this thread for a long time, finally have something now so I'll share:

graduated in 2012 with at B.A in Finance and one internship under my belt.

Wasted my grace period chasing govt jobs and getting denied, even tho I was told by a current govt employee that govt
was showing preference for veterans and people with previous govt experience, I had neither but I was stubborn and thought I would get it anyway.
Once that grace period was over I realized it was crunch time because Sallie doesn't play, then had no success applying for private sector jobs.

filled out about 70 apps but due to my unemployment I was getting passed over & overlooked, even for jobs I was def qualified for, I later learned companies didn't want to hire people with large unemployment gaps, they think your not productive |I even if you've been diligently searching, they'll take more recent grads or people who are currently employed in some capacity over you, and the longer the gap the more people you have to compete with >: pissed me off
ended up being unemployed for 1 year and 5 months :smh:

Found a temp agency by accident, they got me a 30 day temp as an office assistant at an Insurance Company.
the manager there liked me work ethic so he extended my temp to 3 months and bumped me up to doing Underwriting Assistant duties.
the last Friday of my temp, I planned to ask for an offer, manager surprised me that Tuesday by saying he wanted to give me an offer :smokin

Signed off on it today, Junior Underwriter $45k + benefits and annual bonus and many other perks.
Wanted more but Its a start so I'll take it, plus there's a lot of room to grow and advance with them so Ill make the most of it

feels good man 8) been waiting a long time

I'd suggest looking for good temp agencies if you're having trouble getting your foot in the door, especially if you have a long block of unemployment like I did
the temps saved my life lol  now to save and get out my parents crib again, tasted freedom before, will be glad when I have it again

I just left Houston for Pa. for govt. job that pays for less than the job in Houston. I absolutely hated that job in Houston. I hated working 8-5 mon-friday w/ a mandatory hour lunch. The whole day is shot by the time I got off. No sick leave. It was a terrible situation.

The first day on my govt. job supervisor told me the earliest I could come in to the office was 6, the latest was 9 and I had to do a minimum of 40 hrs a week and 30min lunch. For the holidays I'm working 10hr (6 to 4:30) days and taking an extra day off a week (usually a monday or friday). After the holidays I will work 5 days a week from 6-2:30, at my last job I was barely getting back from lunch at 2:30. Not too mention I can apply my military service towards retirement and it allowed me to get a little extra leave per pay period.

Oil/Gas/Healthcare is what makes up Houston. I worked oil/gas before, made a ton of money and HATED IT!!!! I started with a bunch of guys that were vets, they are in the same position they were in 07, still begging to go to school. The harder you work the more money everyone else seems to make. I have no desire to obtain any specialized degrees so Healthcare was out the window.

My situation got sweater, after driving all the way up here, the 2nd day on the job I get another govt. offer in DC paying more than my Houston job, w/ guaranteed 10k pay increases for the next 2 years and they are going to train me on how to do the job.

I knew government and thats what I set my eyes on and went for it.

In my opinion don't chase the money, chase what will make you happy.

Yeah, man govt is really looking at vets. They have priority w/ the feds, right now.

Both my homies were finance majors and they both used recruiters to get their jobs.

I'm happy, that your happy.

does anyone have any experience with contract / freelance work?

i'm leaving my company at the end of the month and they offered to bring me in as a contractor temporarily to finish off some of my projects

Depends on the industry. I do satellite installation as a contractor and we're constantly getting screwed over. We have to provide our own equipment and pay our own taxes.

appreciate it man, I did have recruiter, met him twice at career fairs at my school

exchanged contact info, and got the info for a higher up, applied for the job thru my schools page on Nacelink, emailed both right after then got the generic govt response to apply on USAJobs.gov, applied for a lot on there, just didn't work out for me

to those that did have success with them and any other jobs, make the most of it,
to those still looking, keep at it, stay hungry stay persistent even when it gets depressing or frustrating, you day will come.

Thoughts on facial hair and job interviews? I'm bearded up and going to trim it down to a 2 for an interview this week so I don't have to start at square 1 :smh:

Honestly I'd shave the whole thing off, the beard will come back, the opportunity may not.
