Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

Thoughts on facial hair and job interviews? I'm bearded up and going to trim it down to a 2 for an interview this week so I don't have to start at square 1 :smh:
Honestly I'd shave the whole thing off, the beard will come back, the opportunity may not.

I agree. The culture is changing to be more open to them but some people are still about the old ways so better safe than sorry

I'm going to be interviewed by 3 women. Some females are :x while others are :wow: about beards. I'll go down to a 1 .

Maybe I'm terrible with money or have a ton of bills but I'm making about 32.15 hourly and find myself dipping into my savings all the time. SMFH.

Had a job interview today that just didn't make sense. I have no experience in indoor air quality anywhere on my resume yet 4 people are asking me about something I have no experience with. I mean didn't you read my damn resume.

Hours are 6-2:00pm which was insane to me. I'm trying to avoid the early mornings, been doing it two years. I'm assuming they would have low balled me anyway man. #$@$ this working for somebody man, it's a joke.

On the flip side I already have a gig getting a weekly paycheck so it's whatever. I wasted vacation time tho.. NEVER LEAVE A JOB UNTIL YOU HAVE A NEW ONE.

so currently I have been trying to move to a bigger company ( hopefully F500) to a more senior level and increase pay. I had an interview with them before the thanksgiving break and they told me they started the interview process the same day. i know it gets busy during the holiday break but it has been exactly 15 days since the interview and i have emailed the recruiter twice whether she had any updates. still no updates and I really want this job man. Have you guys ever been in a similar position as me and things turned out good for you?

Yes I've been in a similar position and more often than not it's not a good one to be in.

This time of year is weird because of all the people they let go and how the budget is being worked out. That could be the cause of the delay but who knows

Yo team,

Need some feedback if anyone is willing to offer.

I got a job making $40k a year... which is roughly $18/hour.  I was basically not given a pay raise for my 1 year because of my lack of communication and maybe some office politics type bs.  There's more to the story then just what I wrote.

Anyway, how do I go about finding another job... what strategies are you employed bros using?  I was thinking about contacting a temp agency and just asking for direct hire positions.

I've sent my resume out this week but haven't heard back yet.

I am in a similar position. How many sick days and PTOs do you have saved up? How's your schedule? Are you able to come and leave? So far, I have my resume up on a few job boards and linkedin and I have been getting hit up my recruiters through that. However, most of the stuff is :x. I have just been looking through linkedin, simplyhired and indeed and I apply to any positions that interests me. If I have a phone interview, I normally just go to my car and do it. If I have an in-person, I normally take a half day or take a sick day. Don't quit before you get an offer!!!!!!!! If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me bro.

I have a good amount of sick days and I've actually went to several interviews/testing this last month but nothing materialized... I thought it's easier to get hired when you're already hired... at least that's what they say.  BUT man my interviewing skills are beyond terrible.

I was considering quitting after I heard I wasn't getting a raise... I put a lot of effort into my work.. I don't complain at all.. I've taken all assignments thrown my way without a word.  I was about 2 seconds away from telling my manager to piss off before leaving work but I will need to think it through this weekend.  I'm dreading tomorrow.. but you're right man I need to hold tight until I find another job...

Btw, It's not even the pay tbh... it's the amount of favoritism and bs that goes on behind closed doors.  I'll rather get a lower paying job with a fair company... if you look up my company on glassdoor we have a 2 star rating.

Anyway, sry about the rant.  Thumbs up because we're both walking the same path.

Don't stop trying man. Keep looking and something will come up! Pretty keen to find out what company you're working at now though since you mentioned the 2 star rating

Hey NT I know a lot of people are speaking about changing jobs/career paths and advice so I thought I would share my story. Last year I was living in New Haven CT doing alcohol abuse research. It was a good job but something I wasn’t passionate about. I left the position and moved across the country to Chicago to work with gang members. I arrived in Chicago in September and started volunteering with an organization in Little Village i had contacted via email during the summer. In addition I was volunteering as a research assistant for a PhD candidate transcribing his data. I had also contacted him via email during the summer.

I treated my volunteer time as a real job I was there 40 hours a week doing anything the organization asked or needed. Through these two volunteer positions I was referred to two additional organizations on the South and West side doing violence prevention. One of them was a part time job and the other I started volunteering at.

So for the months of October to December I had 4 different jobs, transcribing, getting 5 paid hours in Little Village, 15 paid hours on the West Side and volunteering on the South side. Between the four I was working about 50-60 hours a week and getting paid for 20. But I was learning so much, being out of my comfort zone in a new city and learning about their unique urban gang paradigm. During this time I wasn't really filling out applications online because I knew what I wanted to do and I wasn't going to take a position I didn't want. In addition I was enjoying myself so much it didn't feel like I was working at all. Last Friday the organization in Little Village told me they created a full time position for me…my dream job. The organization on the South Side liked my work so much I will be working as a consultant for them on the side. And the doctoral student wants me to help make his dissertation a book.

Before I moved to Chicago I had saved about four months worth of rent. I was lucky to get a place close to public transportation, as I don’t have a car. But to everyone who is looking to transition or move to a new city I say do it. It is better to have a short life spent doing what you live then a long life spent in a miserable way. And if you like what your doing you can become a expert/master of it and charge a good fee for your services. Rarely will you find the right moment for change, most of the time you just have to jump in head first. Our most memorable life moments are the ones we were most uncomfortable.

This Steve Job's quote helped me to keep pushing. If I can be of help to any of you guys let me know.

'Don’t let the noise of other's opinions drowned out your inner voice and most important have the courage to follow your hear and intuition they some how already know what you truly want to become everything else is secondary. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it".

So after moving to Pa from Tx for a government position, I was offered a higher position in Va and I got my start date Monday. Perfect end to what I thought was going to be a bad year.

The best advice anyone can give you is that networking is Crucial in furthering your career. I didn't learn that til I was in my mid 20's actually. As soon as I started networking more, my career pretty much took off. And what I mean in the networking sense is joining young professional organizations in your city. Here in Charlotte, there are tons of them. Yea, it's another way to get faded off of draft beer on a Thursday happy hour, but the diverse people that you meet can be Essential to getting your resume and skillset noticed by them, that can then be forwarded to their Director, etc etc.

Did you ever felt a sense of nervousness when attending these networking meetings? How did you get over it?

No, not really. Typically i was always with a buddy of mine when i would attend. At the time, we were in the early parts of our careers, both lived in Uptown Charlotte so we would meet up after work and walk down to wherever venue the networking event was being held. I'm a social guy so it was easy to start up convos with people that i just met, etc. I would always meet someone who knew someone in a high ranking Director's position and that's where the networking started. Charlotte is a Huge banking city, #2 only behind NYC in the US, so there's a Ton of opportunities here to carve your career path. I actually left Wells Fargo earlier this year for my mid-career dream job working for a healthcare consulting company.

So the best thing to do is find out what the networking events are being held in your city, facebook is a good start. Grab your lady or a friend and take advantage of the opportunity as im sure all of the events are free.

Nice! The grind is real man. I turned down a second interview with this gig in Rockville. I've been doing to DC commute for 2 years man and I've reached my breaking point. It's either you wake up crazy early or you're in the worst traffic in the world. No money in the world is worth that. Make it happen in VA!!

I've held down this job at verizon for almost a year and I've gotten very good. So good that the district manager has been considering me for a manager spot on the near future. I thought about it, but I want a job with weekends off and I don't have to be on my feet all day and making at least 40k.

I'm going to be in my grind with the job hunt in 2k15. I've got to land a solid job.

No disrespect at all, because i'm sure your happy to even have a job during this tough time as would a lot of people.

But Verizon pays less than $40k? I thought they would've made more.

Anyone here have experience with door to door sales jobs. I have an interview coming up for an account executive position at an energy company. They basically go from business to business to get clients to sign up for their energy plan. Pay is 100% commission. I've been searching for full time employment for about a year now and this is looking like a last resort for me.
