Don't get overwhelmed with the list of duties listed...they make it sound a lot harder than it seems. Worked in the oil fields with no experience and went to interviews for jobs that had a long list of requirements/duties

Make sure you let them know that you are detail oriented and that you work hard and always follow all safety policies and procedures to ensure the safest work environment for yourself and your co-workers. Labor jobs for large corporations are big on safety in the workplace

Good luck!

Got a job offer today from the firm in nyc. It's contingent on my last reference and a drug screening but ***** WE MADE IT :smokin :smokin :smokin

To all my people going through it, keep your head up and stay active. Going over materials I need for my profession and going to the gym were some of the best things I've done while looking for work. Keeping my body active really helped fight depression.

Good luck to everyone

Congrats, man. They actually call references? I ask because most firms, including the ones I've worked for, never call and if someone calls, usually a 3rd party company, we just give them the date of employment. We don't really say he's a good or bad worker due to liability.

Well the 3 firms Ive gotten offers from have called my references so idk. I think it's a waste of time tbh because why would I list someone that thinks I'm a terrible worker

i left california in october, stable job 5 mins away, had just gotten a raise, salary benefits.

easy work, but they hired some douchebag who just made work suck, and he pretty much pooped on my parade.

anyway, my girl and i had always talked about leaving to south carolina since her fam is there.

we made the move in october, we lived at her parents for like 3 months, she was in another town 2 hrs away working some little part time ish.

she couldnt find anything and mind you she went to college and all that, i didnt look for work because i wasnt in the area we planned to live in. (charleston)

anyway we found a place in february i started to look for work in my field (audio/visual) and could not find anything.

i got so depressed and just started applying to crappy jobs, didnt even get a damn interview for champs,

little did i know but my girl had emailed the local a/v companies and sent em my resume and all that, then out of nowhere i had like 3 places interested,

started doing part time stuff, then out of nowhere a company who i had interviewed me called and said they needed help, they eventually hired me for full time.

the place is literally down the street, im sorry for the long post but i just want the jobless bros out there to know that theres stuff out there you just gotta chase em.

i gave up immediately, i felt like a loser and it sucked, not to mention my girl couldnt find anything and it was kind of taking a toll on us, she was mad that i stopped trying and was so angry, but in the end i ended up getting work within a week of looking, which was insane.

the job i got is very different from what i've done before, its alot of setting up weddings, conferences and pretty much anything.

one day we could do a huge conference then one day we are taking a tv to a hotel,

i will be salary after 90 days also will get bonuses, and commision for the stuff i get rented out, not to mention benefits.

started in february.

You'll just be a warehouse worker , load and unload trucks and stack pallets with the forklift. I had an interview with Union pacfic for the track repair side and everything is cool but it's a little diffrent lol. Work one week off one week , but you gotta travel

Did you follow up at all? Or just wait for a response. I'm in that boat right now.

Yep.

- Interviewed
- Followed up 5 days later, told I would have a decision in a few days
- Didn't hear anything, emailed again early the following week, no response
- Called last Friday, no answer. Left a voicemail
-Got a call back from the recruiter saying there were delays and that I had the job.

You in downtown Charleston? I lived down there for a little over a year and a lot of folks I knew seemed to face the same problems you were having.
i live in west ashley which is less than 10 mins away from downtown, i could never live there, i HATE driving down there for work.

the drivers suck and then the idiots from the college are always on their phone just wandering into the street.
Shorty has some star qualities right there man

yeah man shes great, im very quick to put myself down but she  picks me right up, always believes in me and never gave up on me.

she is what i've always wanted, someone to treat me like a king and is devoted to our partnership and only being successful together.

we have no drama, no jealousy, shes not constantly taking pics of herself.

Got ya, I'm familiar with the area.  I was going to suggest applying to jobs in Mt. Pleasant, as it is continuously growing, but sounds like you're all set now.

I'll try to make this as short as possible...

Need some input for my sister, she's a social worker and does a lot with hospice patients. The reason she decided to take this job and leave her previous one was that it offered about 10k more and she felt she could have a positive impact with personal/emotional ties since our grandmother was on hospice. Every time I speak with her she's emotionally drained, she takes home tons of work, co workers and boss offer little support (she was recently thrown under the bus for something), and has less time to enjoy for herself. She recently got engaged and wants to keep the job in order to save for the wedding, but I can tell the job is wearing on her and I hate to see her not enjoy her job like she previously did. My question is, what was the breaking point for anyone who was in a similar situation? I've been in the hunt for an engineering job for a while and the only advice I can give her is to be thankful for a job while striving to eventually be where you want to be. I feel like she is under tremendous stress and I would appreciate any relevant input that I can maybe pass on to her. TIA

*edit* sorry fambs for such a long post

No advice on her situation but tell her to apply for the VA. The pay pretty well for social workers.

Been working at GNC for about 6 weeks and just got promoted to store manager. Didn't plan on making a career out of this being that I'm in the mental health field, but can't pass on salary + benefits. Ideally would like to collect a few checks and get a counseling job where I can get supervision hours toward my license.

Anyone ever have a situation like this happen to them?

I interviewed for a job a few weeks ago, think I did really well on the interview HR even told me so, all the feedback was great to the point where they asked me for my references. The thing is that they wanted a reference from a current coworker and my current manager to be two of the three. Now if they're going to ask for those specific references and essentially put me in a position where I make it known that I'm entertaining the idea of leaving my current job you'd think I'd have this wrapped up.

But come to find out, my references came back so-so, which to be honest is ridiculous, I'm not a bad or average employee by any stretch of the imagination, I've kept every performance review I've gotten as evidence of that, I've been publicly recognized for my performance in front of the company etc etc. I even just accepted a promotion the week before this situation came about which I think is what rubbed them the wrong way.

The question I have is, can a bad reference really make that much of a difference? I'm like two steps away from calling people out on them cause its not cool that they did that honestly, I would never do that to someone even if I thought they were the worst. I would praise them to death.

I called last week Friday which is when I found out about the whole reference thing, HR told me, and they also mentioned that the hiring manager didnt want to see any more resumes because he really liked me (he said he was reading an email that he received from him) and that they would get back to me on Monday. They didnt call, so now I'm just in an overall funk about it. This job was gonna be everything I wanted and to have it potentially be mine over this would set me off.

This is very unprofessional on the part of your references, especially since you reached out to them beforehand and specifically asked them to be references.

There's nothing you can do at this point, but you should try reaching out to your references/getting more references. It's clear someone's trying to sandbag you. Maybe you're too good to let go?

PS - I've never had to provide references from my current job. Do companies actually know that that's not usually the typical protocol or makes any sense at all?
