Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

No doubt, you have to go with what you have. I was more so mentioning it for people in the market for interview attire.

Its not like I had a choice in the matter, they asked for specific people and I gave them said people.

I dunno, but let it be a lesson. Be good with people, but also develop your strong suita with the right people. Your strongest one being your immediate supervisor and possible co-worker. Of course every HR dept functions differently.

What‘s worst is that HR screens a lot of applicants, before it even reaches to the dept. head, creating lost opportnities.

Kerp trying.

Let this story serve as inspiration to those still out there looking, especially my fellow young men of color.

Walked in there. 3 people interviewing me, but the director did most of the talking. I held a convo with the director for like a good 3 mins before I realized that this WAS the interview, and I was doing fantastically.

Long story short, all this lady kept saying was how eloquent and articulate I was. How intelligent I seem. I'm less than 3 weeks away from a college degree. I'm educated. Through my speaking, I spun my brief internship into one of the greatest learning experiences of my life--which it was.

She said she wanted to squeeze every last drop of intelligence out of me that she could. She said she's pretty sure she'd like to hire me. The only thing is that she's trying to figure out where to place me with my intelligence. That word again. Intelligence. She said it a lot.

Ask questions. She asked if I had any questions for them and I asked them 5 or 6 very challenging questions. She said nobody asks her questions when she interviews them.

Wear a black suit. Stand tall. Walk tall. Speak eloquently. That means speak with some intelligence. You're not an idiot. You're not what they're out here trying to portray you as.

So prove it.
Congrats fam. When you get this gig (here's to hoping), the first thing you should cop is a navy suit. Trust me on this.

That being said, I'll just leave this here:

All signs are pointing to no. Its been two weeks since I've heard anything.
That's whack. Did you at least indicate to them that you got way better performance reviews than what was represented by the references?

And what did they even say specifically?

Nah I didnt, whole thing came at me so fast I didn't even have time to respond.

They said that my references came back somewhat poor and that the reason they havent gotten back to me is because the hiring manager is on the fence because he wanted someone who's done a particular set of work before which I havent done, but he didnt want to see any more new resumes an that I was the top choice at the moment.

I trust the word of that HR guy, when he first called me and asked me my story he had a very similar one, was trying to move out of state to the same place I'm trying to move to, from the same place where I currently am, but wasnt getting a lot of looks until this company came along, so I really felt like he was in my corner a bit, but now I cant even get a call back from the guy.

That's whack man. I'm assuming you've been following up and they're curving

Hit them again after some time has passed, if not just to inquire if the position has been filled.

Now you know for next time that you got snakes in your corner

make sure to preface any work-related references with performance reviews from now on

You have to actually learn from the situation, think what you did wrong, instead of trying to point at others.  I am confused about your story though.  You got promoted, you were recognized, and yet your references came out negative?  This tells me you have a terrible relationship within your particular environment and a suffocating one between you and your supervisor.  Look on the bright side and grow from this.  Learn to develop relationships that will help you.

References are more of a final confirmation move by HR.  HR will spend the time doing the reference calls if you were a potential candidate.

Also, to avoid putting too much mental stress on yourself, apply to as many places as you can.  This gives you experience and spreads out the anxiety/emphasis you mentally place on a particular position.  Give yourself options.

Thats correct, I got promoted the week before I asked people for references and made it apparent that I wanted to leave the company.

He feels slighted by it for some reason and IDK why.

When I began my recent job its becoming real to me why my dad always said he hated working for someone else and became an entrepreneur. My manager tells me to do this, that, etc... f that.

Stack money until you have enough to do your own thing.

I'm sure 90% of folks don't like their jobs. I understand where you're coming from though.

Sorry to hear that man. In general, it's a conflict of interest to have your current employer act as a reference. Add in the fact that people have their own motivations and it makes the situation tougher than it should be.

since flatbush brought up the intelligence thing, ill say this. in my experience, most of these fields are classist and racist so it puts a lot of added pressure on people to attempt to fit into a company's work culture. almost every new person ive met in a non academic setting has tested my intelligence to the point where i just hate talking to new people mostly. while some people will say that its up to us to break their perception, i will say that nothing is more relieving than just being yourself. yes present yourself in a respectful manner, yes walk in there like youre the **** and they should give you 50 mil or youll quit, yes use diction to your advantage to show familiarity with the field, but do not accept condescension, do not be afraid to show them your individuality, and let them ******* know they will flourish because you are different.

i dont know if that interview dialogue upset you but stuff like that gets under my skin. hopefully you wont run into issues like that if you do decide to work with them. good work with the questions though, it breaks up the monotony of the interview process for them and yourself.

When I read this it set off a huge red flag. This is a blatant conflict if interest and I've never heard of it being done. I know he said they loved him but I really have to question if it's true.

They who, my current employer or the interviewers?
