Jobless and Frustrated NTers check in VOL. WE NOT-WORKIN!!!

wavycrocket wavycrocket My previous job has a voice automated system but certain jobs are person-to-person. I think it depends on the company. But going into finances for hiring is a bit overboard. Or am I being naive???

Yes they're checking all of that. My last background check comprised of the following.

-Salary history for the last three jobs I had.
-Dates of employment verification for said jobs, even though they were all with the same company.
-Address history for the last ten years including college.
-College transcript submission.
-High school GPA submission and verification with the high school (I graduated high school in 2007 and this check happened in May 2015)
-SAT scores
-Credit check/look into your financials.

Any misrepresentation of that information or lack of inclusion was a cause for withdrawal of the offer.

Not saying every background check will be that extensive but at minimum I've always had income and credit checks done.

Hmm...I doubt they'll be looking at your credit score and stuff on a backround check. More like previous salaries, address history etc I guess. Thats interesting though. I work in Marketing, and I never had a problem with a background check....for multiple jobs. I've stretched out time spent at a job a few months too. But idk.

I'm really trying to make the switch to HR. Wanna be behind the scenes of the hiring process, and the job seems kind of chill from the outside looking in.

^^ they have to ask your permission. When you apply the section regarding the fair credit reporting act basically states you must agree with the check to be considered for the position. Most employers are doing employment verification, background check & credit check. More serious positions will ask you for college transcripts etc. as Anti stated.

As far as stretching the dates it really depends on the company. A company I just interviewed for has a rep for not hiring if your employment dates are even off by a week.

antidope antidope But where is the legal authority? I did not sign any disclosure. Getting my own debt history is not that easy, how and where are employers getting access?
Oh I signed a waiver for them to look all that stuff up.

$tatus $ymbol $tatus $ymbol , Same. I knew this company was not bluffing about any of what they said. If they found wrong info that was going to be it for me.

I would like to start reaching out to recruiters on LinkedIn after applying for jobs, but the thing is that I'm not sure of what to say to them. Anyone with tips or possibly a email template?

in my experience, they just give BS scripted responses. the same goes for finding the contact's e-mail. Someone told me it's more effective to call on the phone.

I might finally have something lined up after all these months. Hopefully I end the month being employed.

Also, I met up with a couple of ex co workers this past weekend. They told me the lady that fired me got fired herself back in early November. For those that don't remember she was the new manager in my department who never liked me and wanted to implement a new system in our department.

karma is a biach

damn son I remember that. Good luck I wanna have something lined up by the end of this month

Aside from background checks (ie. criminal history) are employers really checking for financial history as well?!?! Feel free to comment.

If you work in financial services they will check that for certain positions. It's a way for them to gauge your integrity. I mean you have access to accounts with millions of dollars if not billions sometimes.

had a skype interview today for 12:30...12:38 gets here I hit the guy with the email asking what's up...dude is like oh can you reschedule for later in the week? Rubbed me the wrong way about his company's professionalism.

I have a live online writing skills assessment tomorrow night for a position within the Federal Court System. Any tips?

A bit off-topic, but my brother is a college freshman and is slacking heavy.

He's a finance major like I was, but won't listen when I give him advice and tell him to network hard (he's at a disadvantage having a 3.5 GPA at a state school). I'd like to connect him with a few homies / prior bosses I worked with, but I know deep down he'll embarrass himself (and to an extent, me).

It's disappointing honestly. This is the kid who basically slacked off writing his college entrance essays until the due date and essentially played the victim card so I could write them for him.

3.5? I would say he's crushing it. I didn't have a 3.5 freshman year. Honestly in my opinion my grades are an embarrassment and have hindered my life many a tim

True Story one of my current bosses legit asked me what my GPA was and followed by saying that I must have F'ed up some where for it to be that bad.

Honestly don't know how I even got a job here with it being this crap.

He'll be fine, do some extra curricular activities and hit up the career services center from today.

I feel you though I give my little brother a hard time about his grades too and he's 13. They just don't want to hear it but it's for their betterment

I mean not all GPAs are equal. I can't knock dude for being concerned about his brothers future.

Dude has a 3.5 GPA and your stressing? Cmon fam
He wants to do banking (M&A), which is one of the toughest gigs to get out of college.

3.5 at a Top 30 school with a robust alumni network? No problem.

3.5 at a no name state college? Damn near impossible.

I've been through the grind and want to help him so he doesn't make the same mistakes I made (e.g. not taking anything seriously until it was too late).

Serious question. Why a college degree important? It shows commitment? It measures the ability of an individual to learn?

There's always exceptions of course but for example .. I know a senior person in Golfstream that never been to college and he knows more than a person that graduate with honors. I don't mean general knowledge but technical application and the job at hand.

I know another in Mass Mutual in a similar situation where he is making HR decisions on recent graduates.

These dudes can't tell you the difference between Aristotle and Plato, but can run circles on what matters.

keko jones keko jones I was having this conversation today with a friend who feels college wasn't worth the steep price tag ... My say on it is that college in relation to job recruiting is that your education is a synopsis of the information and skills you may have. But if you have a specialized skill and are able to convey that skill to a recruiter then college might not be the best route. I doubt an employer that realizes you are the "perfect" fit to a job wouldn't give you a position based on college credits or credentials. Although the formal education system we know as college in the US is somewhat built to supply the labor force. It's probably the most effective tool recruiters have in filtering candidates and matching jobs with employees. I think college helps the social developmental process. But keeping it job related, it's what you make of it. College isn't for everybody but if put to good use, it can be a powerful tool.
