Your thoughts on the melting pot of America?

The best thing my high school did was get rid of honors Language Arts courses. Everyone thrown in together, including the elective LA courses. You could do some extra work outside of class to get that little "H" on your transcript, but in the classroom, the whole school was equal. It was far more successful than any diversity assemblies, days of respect, love thy neighbor, etc. garbage that was forced on the entire student body.

huh?

A salad bowl they say.
We don't lose ourselves in a salad bowl, at least that's what my teacher last year said.
Yeah, I don't like the "melting pot" metaphor because that would mean that we're all the same. In a salad there's multiple components like the lettuce, other veggies, croutons etc., without everything fusing together.
Yeah.
Melting Pot: Together but conforming, losing our sense of self.
Salad Bowl: Together but still retaining our identity.

But somewhere along the line this became another tendency that was deemed "racist" in society. I hate how there's this sentiment that because races generally don't associate with each other it's a bad thing. It's just natural human instinct to associate with things that are familiar. I have nothing against minorities at all, I just don't have anything in common with them, I wasn't raised around them, so why should I be forced to make friends with them. As long as I'm not actively suppressing their ability to interact in society, then who gives a f?
Wait what? Your kidding right?

Wait.. your kidding right?
Natural human instinct trumps whatever idealistic vision of society you may have.

I was just relating something my high school did to integrate the classrooms. You said that the white and black kids were on different floors inyour school. I was giving an example of what my school did to combat that in one subject.

so wait, you say you have nothing in common with someone that you have never met ?
roll.gif

that's very interesting and by your logic just because you were not raised in the same environment, that makes it ok to not at least have some interest inunderstanding the culture. lol I wonder what you will do if/when your city's "ethnic minority" becomes the majority.

i bet you'd be surprised what you have in common with alot of people...you probably don't even know what you do/don't have in common cuz you weren't raised around them or tried to kick it with other people...
word...some of the coolest people i have met have nothing culturally in common with me...i know...mind blowing

I think people like the idea of a melting pot more so than the reality of things. America is still 80% white. Let's be real here.

Nah, dog. I'm pretty positive that in a few years, Latinos are going to be the majority. I know for SURE that America isn't 80% white.

^ Statistically, whites will be minorities in 30 years. I think whites are the color of capital and leadership to degree. Reality is if your black and not inschool, or paid your not making friends like T.V portrays it.

the way you generalize races having things in common with one another makes me absolutely nauseous.. how can you say you dont have anything incommon with an entire race?!?!

who is forcing you to be friends with anybody anyways, its def a choice, but they way you are portraying youself makes you seem wicked racist..

I know it's a wikipedia link but it's source is the US Census website (I even downloaded the excel spreadsheet to check the numbers myself beforehand).

This thread is NOT an attack on white people.

NO. Its everyone.

Asian, Brown, Black, Latinos, White. Everyone.

Sheltered? Absolutely not. My parents sent me to a school in the inner city where minorities were the majority. I made tons of friends there. And in the end, Ireally just didn't have anything in common with them. You idiots have this fantastical vision of society that is incredibly unrealistic. People associatewith other people they are familiar with. It doesn't mean they don't want to associate with different people, but human nature dictates who weassociate with. I've made plenty of friends with minorities in my life, but I really just don't have much to offer in terms of a true lastingfriendship. It's not because I don't want to, but my job doesn't have a whole lot of minorities, at least where I work. I live in a predominantlywhite part of town, yet you will hold all that against me, I'm sure, because I'm not willing to venture outside my comfort zone. I've gone farenough outside my "comfort" zone to not let you ******s on a message board assume I'm some closet racist.

you guys are unable to accept basic truths of human nature and that's sad. Everything is racist to you guys. And that is a horrible way to go through lifebecause you're just looking for excuses.

name calling isnt necessary to get your point across sir...now no one is gonna disregard anything decent you could have said...calm down...

^You're kind of saying that all minorities have the same interests which isn't true. Maybe you just haven't met any minorities YET that you canshare interests with. It seems like you've given up on it and are absolutely certain that you have nothing in common with minorities.

If it means anything, I hang out with nothing but Filipinos/Asians.
I'm black, if that matters.

Lets move the shift away
Asians seem to blatantly clique whenever they go. Flipino sets are as hard as they come.
Brown people love their segregation, they delve deeper by countries
I am not singling out these groups, as they are just the ones the come to mind.

About relating to college. Why not step outside your 'comfort zone' and be open to friendship outside your race? Making Asian clubs, latino clubs, americano clubs don't make sense to me. I still don't know why schools support it financially and socially. You'll never see another race step intothe clubs knowing that its segregated into a specific group of people!!!! I really dislike this notion.

It's America, our past generations strive to come to this place for the ability to have such freedom, but ya'll just take it away when you go off onyour tangents.

Another thing to realize about this aspect, you'll see some people blatantly hate their race because of this. I'm not fond of them as well see thatthis is not a double standard. You shall give respect to not only other races but your own race as well.

I had this breezy say on facebook "Stop inviting me to asian parties, ill never go and never will" Damn I wanted to snuff her right there, you cansee the hate she has boiled for herself as an asian.

I had another girl say, "I try to avoid large groups of asian people"

Actually it is like 70-80% white. Nice try though.

Those clubs aren't bad things.
I'm a member of Filipino Club, Hispanic Culture Club, and Polynesian Club.
I use it as a way to learn about other cultures.
The clubs at my school want people from all walks of life joining the club. They don't say "our kind only" though some members tend to think thatway.

I'll admit, I'm usually one of the few other people in these clubs, but when people see me and others steppingout then they want to do it as well.

Wow it's kind of odd to hear some of the things said on race cause I'm not like that at all nor any of my friends. My best friend is Chinese and my gfis Indian and I'm Puerto rican. My "comfort zone" is the human race. I really don't see individual races like some of you.
