I decided i'm going to move to LA. I been on a month + long road trip and i've been in LA 3 weeks now. I fell in love w/ everything the city has tooffer except the housing costs.

I went looking for an apartment in santa monica and almost puked...my 2,600 sg ft crib outside of dallas cost around the same as a 500 sq ft studio in santamonica...@!@?

Where are other good areas to move?

... You comin out the pockets no matter where you stay in Cali.Depends tho ... I know houses are pretty cheap out in Lancaster / Palmdale but thats a 45 min commute to the city ...

So why would you want to downsize that drastically if you have/had a 2600+ sq foot house to a 500 sq. foot pad in Cali? I understand you like the scene outthere, but what's wrong w. Dallas?

seriously. your spot rite now is 5x bigger than the one you want to move in.

how the hell you doin all this but you talkin bout your house is foreclosed, your unemployed, and something about your 745??

Don't sound like you did any research before moving and for a place like Santa monica that should be high.
Don't compare the rent to what you had before, it not going to help.
Did you move for work? Or you just want to be here?

It's not long term. I'm single, no kids so I feel I might as well do everything I want to do before I have more responsibility. I've been to LAa few times, but I can't experience everything in a weekend or on a vacation.

I'm only going to live once, and I always wanted to live near a beach. Dallas is cool, but i've been there 4.5 years and I'm kind of bored w/ it.It's a very corporate city while LA is more laid back. Plus, I have a broadcast journalism degree that I've never used and it would be cool to actuallywork in my field. I can make good money out here as a videographer and final editor.

I bounced back....sold some of my Louis Vuitton collection, got my car fixed, still no job but I got enough $$ to last me until the end of June.

While other unemployed ppl are sitting around stressing, I decided to enjoy life before I get back in the rat race of being a slave @ work again. All I need isgas money and a mcdonalds and i'm good. I know ppl in every major city, so i'm visiting friends and chillin.

if youre willing to grind it out initially, then go for it, you only live once.

off topic: i remember a young couple that my parents rented an apt to and it was funny because they were saying how SF was so great. in my head im like, yourepaying some expensive rent for a small one bedroom, no parking, no washer/dryer, no backyard, etc. they had well paying jobs where they were from and acomfortable situation. but i guess when you come from the middle of nowhere in midwest to a big city, whether it be NY, LA, Chi, Sf, etc. anything would bebetter, lol

I live in Santa Monica and my rent for my good sized one bedroom is 1400

I could live like a king anywhere else other than Cali/NY on that monthly rent

Add Miami to that list too with high rent 1200 for a small +*% room when in TX 1200 can get you a 2br 2 story apt

You just have to know the right people at the right time. As to moving in LA, I suggest you move to the outskirts of LA and just commute to LA. The city is funno doubt, but its no fun when you live there. There's just a lot of things you have to get used to that you probably have never encountered back in Dallas.my .02

KOREA TOWN. mid-city. downtown LA. HOLLYWOOD. SILVERLAKE. ECHO PARK. thing is, you can find a cheap palce, you just have to look really hard and have lots oftime. plus it would not hurt if you have good credit and that explain your situation for example; say that you moved from dallas and you barely are gettingthrough and that you go to school. oh, and of course don't say that you plan on partying it up !

might as well chalk downtown chi onto that list too. if all you got is 1,400 expendable cash you can't even live like a court jester much lessa king.

Nice to see you doing good, and I guess if you really like it go for it just be wary. I have no suggestions.

I was also thinking about moving out there. How much money would you guys think I need to save berfore moving to LA?

I'm not sure about Downtown L.A. A friend of mine lives in one of those high rise apartments where they're trying to eliminate the needfor tenants to drive, the joint is small as hell and it's nearly 2k a month. Also gas prices here aren't the cheapest and you have to drive everywheresince the city was built and expanded base on private transportation.
