Moving to LA....Cost of housing unappreciation!

Because it is Dallas,

.

There is a reason why it cost more to live in Southern California, urban areas, than in any other place in the US (except New York and San Francisco). Majorcities have a lot to offer, and if it wasn't for the Cowboys, Dallas wouldn't even be on the map.

I know houses are pretty cheap out in Lancaster / Palmdale but thats a 45 min commute to the city ...
He is better off staying in Dallas,

.

I've never been tempted to leave the city for the outskirts, like many do. Sure there are bigger houses in the 909/951, but I woudn't want to live outthere. The only time I go out there is to snowboard (Mt High, Big Bear). Otherwise, no reason to go out to the boonies.

Sometimes, you see the cars people are pushing in car threads and it makes you think, then again they show their driveway and you can clearly see they live ina cookie cutter cul de sac somwhere in The Boonies, USA. $##@ that, I would rather pedal to work, in my slightly smaller house.

As to moving in LA, I suggest you move to the outskirts of LA and just commute to LA. The city is fun no doubt, but its no fun when you live there. There's just a lot of things you have to get used to that you probably have never encountered back in Dallas. my .02
It depends on what you mean by "outskirts", the commute East is brutal, don't know how people deal with that commute daily.

Personally, I wouldn't go further east than the San Gabriel Valley, otherwise your looking at a 1 hour plus commute from Downtown.

Koreatown isn't too bad, check out the South Bay (Torrance, Bellflower, Carson, etc.), Southeast (South Gate, Downey), San Gabriel Valley (Arcadia), theEast (Alhambra, Monterey Park) or Dodger Stadium area (Silver Lake, Echo Park) which are heavily underrated and you can find low cost living with reasonablecommutes to Downtown LA. In terms of rent (not mortgage), if you want cheap don't look into the Westside (Santa Monica, any beach city) or Pasadena.

If ya'll think Echo Park is bad, you guys are soft Angelenos,

I wanna move to silver lake but my moms just called it a gay town. Thing is the crime rate is pretty cool there, plus it's right up the street from sunset.
It is, but who the +$@% cares, it is a nice area with a lot of shops, cafes and restaurants (mom & pop). Rent is affordable and it is closeto Downtown, and a hop and a skip from the Hollywood scene. Hell, if you don't have a car, you are one bus ride from the Sunset Strip or Hollywood Blvd.

Because i'm a risk taker...I used to live conservative and that got me nowhere. I live for today and i'll worry about tomorrow later. Sure, I couldplay it safe but playing it safe isnt going to get me the apt near the beach. If my plan fails, then i can go back to where I was.

Tomorrow isnt promised. Hell, I eat 2 mcdoubles from mcdonalds everyday for lunch. I could drop any day now

Echo Park is not that nice, to put it nicely again. Glendale, and Los Felix part of L.A. would be a better choice, just a bit north of Echo Park, but rent would be higher there. We lived in a nice apartment with 2 bedrooms in Los Felix back in the mid 90's and I still remember the rent was $1,000. I'm sure it went up by 100% since then.

Tim - I've never gone to NorCal so I can't answer that. I don't think it would be much of an issue if you just use it as a place to sleep and mind your own business. We lived in a bad area for about 9 years, granted that it was a gated community, but there were still gun shots and gangs around. I never mess with anyone or anything in the area..once that gate opens up, I shoot down to the onramp to get on the freeway.

like I said previously, all you need to do is go OUT and look. chances are you will stumble upon a desperate owner willing to rent.just make youself look presentable and not unprofessional. good luck.

i live in alhambra, 2br 1ba apt for 1200 a month. 950 sq ft.

you can get something similar in ktown for about 1400.

price of this in santa monica is about 1800.

if you want to be central, goto ktown. its decent price and in between everything.

if you want to be a commuter, move to the valley (northridge, reseda, tarzana, granada hills, woodland hills) or the other valley (alhambra, south pasadena, san gabriel, rosemead, monterey park, montebello).

it really depends on where you want to be close to. i live in alhambra but i work in santa monica, so it takes me about 1hr 15 min every morning to get towork. im used to it so it aint bad and im willing to do it. plus i couldnt live on the westside. i could live in ktown tho, which would be like 30 mins to workeven tho its only like 8 miles away.

also on a sidenote....im here until sunday. im staying at the miyako hotel in japantown. tonight were hitting up the rootdown at little temple. anything else crackin this week???
Melrose and Sunset is always cracking.

K-town...that's not the safest neighborhood, to put it nicely. Your price range is kinda low so you may have to settle for htat. When I looked around at an apartment 2 yrs ago, I found a nice 1 bedroom apartment in Northridge near my campus for $1,100 a month and that was a STEAL for what it was.

thank you for the info, i appreciate it. not sure if you can answer this, but maybe you have been to san francisco. how unsafe is it compared to the urban areas of san francisco? im asking because thats where we are from, so if its pretty much like that kind of atmosphere, we can deal. it might actually help with the homesickness! haha

the highest we have been looking at as far as price range goes is in the $1400 range, if that helps.
for $1400 you can find a 2br in ktown easy.

ktown, while some areas are not good, there are areas that are perfectly fine. just use google streetview to determine how the neighborhood looks. dont goanywhere south of the 10 freeway. try looking around HANCOCK park area or MID WILSHIRE. Thats ktown but in better parts. Stay away from streets close towestmoreland and rampart blvd.

and in SF, while i havent lived up there, i have visited, and i never really felt like i couldnt walk in urban areas. in ktown during the day i dont feel bad,but at night in some areas i dont like walking around because you can get hit up by people. nothing most likely will happen.

pre- you moved from the SFV? I didn't know Hancock Park is part of Ktown...the homes there are big and very nice. The only time I really go through Ktownis when I'm going with my mom to get cosmetic from some Korean shops or when I'm driving to my friend's house in L.A. and want to avoid the 405.

Iron Man- it has nothing to do with being soft or tough at all. I said it's bad because the neighborhood is below a middle class level, at least IMO. Iunderstand not everyone is privileged enough to live where they wish to.

hancock park is definitely not ktown...
laugh.gif

and yes...echo park is not middle class, but the area is not that dangerous imo....

echo park is moving on up though.....my neighborhood in between echo park and ktown has had a lot of young white people moving in...

never heard a gunshot in my life....

yeah, moved about 2 years ago to pasadena now in alhambra.

and Hancock isn't Ktown, but i mean its like right next to it so I just call that whole damn area Ktown anyways since its like 5 mins away. You know how itis

it's just the difference between living by the beach or downtown or in one of the many suburbs or in the boonies. the lifestyle/pace of living is worth itto a lot of people in areas like LA, SF, NY

either have further, but bigger and more affordable living or
be right in the mix and have decent living space and high costs

finished apartment hunting...

i think me and the lady found what we want. were leaning towards the downtown LA in a building directly next door to FIDM. thanks for all the help yall.

alot of yall dont know High class scum bag how i do. Duke taught me alot and helped me get where i am right now on the up and up.

go scoop a crib rafa and ima dip on out there in the summer and we post up for a while.

Also NT you dont know the whole story bout why he moving there but he can make TRUST me, and can prolly make more doe and
live better while doing it. i hate dallas for that very reason not much to offer and not many things to do. thats why i want to put my self in the spot to moveto NYC and be able to have money and own my buisness and keep moving up in the world.

I live in Santa Monica and my rent for my good sized one bedroom is 1400
laugh.gif

I could live like a king anywhere else other than Cali/NY on that monthly rent
Add Miami to that list too with high rent 1200 for a small +*% room when in TX 1200 can get you a 2br 2 story apt
1200 in TX can get you a 2 story house, 4 bedroom, 2 living rooms, 1 gameroom, 2 garages, big backyard, and like 3 bathrooms , in a very goodneighborhood

Why even move if you're already complaining about the cost of living?
Sure California has one of the highest COL in the US, but I love it here and NEVER complain about it because I'm here by choice.

Congratulations! I always thought those Apts (assuming they are the new ones going up right at LA Live) were way more than that.

OP - If you want to live in a nicer area that is convenient, westside is where you need to be. I love everything about living on this part of town except therent ($1350 for 1bd/1ba approx. 650-700 sq ft) and my rent aint even all that expensive compared to a lot of the buildings in my neighborhood. If you'reinterested I believe there is a 1bd that just opened up in my building. Its mostly young professionals, couple of older single folk, and two geriatriccouples, but everyone is chill. I have people over at my place all the time and noise is never an issue. I also
pimp.gif
all the time with windows open and aint no one complained or called the cops oranything. Very easy going building to live in.
