the influx of white people in brooklyn vol. gentrification

laugh.gif
I throw parties just about all over bk now. It sucks that theyre kicking the old neighbourhood out who've been there for years. But I appreciatethe help that it does for the communities. Better schools, parks, transportation, less crime, more CFK
smokin.gif
, no more self imposed curfews etc. It'll eventually even out in the longrun. But the buildings theyve been building are pretty

Harlem is like that now.

Back in the day, my block was somewhat rough, now they weeded out the crummy people, forced the dope boys into early retirement, and built up all these nicecondoms (Amani Toomer of the N.Y. Giants has one on my block. Nice dude in person).

They call Harlem, SoHa. In general, it's a good look. Harlem needed somewhat of a face lift.

Kind of off topic but I am surprised so many on NT know what gentrification is. None of my friends did when I brought it up, and they are really bright dudes.

That would be just bringing up @%@% from the past and using it as areason to complain. It's not a race issue. If you can afford to live in these neighborhoods (you know, the ones that are gentrified) then it's fairgame. Are you going to tell me minorities don't make 6 figures these days?

Yeah, a lot of them don't but for the ones that do, what's your argument?

this is actually happening in EVERY MAJOR CITY ACROSS THE COUNTRY!

i live in baltimore and they tore down the project all over the city and building new expensive houses that the folks who lived there before obviously cannotafford. they are turning baltimore into the tourist city that it used to be. some places, u literally have some section 8 and some boarded up houses on on sideof the street and literally right across the street there are $400-$700K+ houses.

i see it in DC also so i'm pretty sure it's happening everywhere.
smh.gif

they are moving the poor ppl to the outskirts of town and rebuilding the inner cities up for the "well off."

Why is it sad?

A lot of people are left homeless or have to relocate as a result of gentrification.....

And somehow that's all someone else's fault other than the people getting priced out.

Well....when you put it like that, I guess you're right. It is their fault they can't afford the skyrocketing rent. Lazy !$$ people,
should have went to college and got a better paying job.

seriously... how dare those people move to that neighborhood when they could afford to, now they want to get mad that the rent has increased past
their ability to pay it... how dare they be mad at something that is essentially designed to break up minority dense housing areas... ingrateful people...

what u obviosly don't understand is it is being done deliberately to move those ppl whove lived there for so long out of those neighborhoods.
this ain't by chance son, it's a calculated and strategic way to move those ppl out of there all in the name of a dollar.

the problem is bigger than wealth tho. i mean, you ship the CULTURE out and you get what you have now in NY.
NY ain't even NY anymore...
i was on the E train the other day and me and like one other person were the only black ppl on the train car.

i'm not saying that white ppl are bad. i'm all for integration..but there's a difference between integration and shipping black ppl off to thesouth, midwest, etc. via gentrification.

i just see the culture dying. no one has really mentioned that part.

I was in williamsburg with my girl on sunday, you would thought we was in SoHo. Even near my PJ whites are round now. Before they wouldn't eeven dare walkon our blocks. Things are changing.

What is this "something" that is designed to break up minority dense areas? Both of you are acting like it's some kind of evilscheme that "the man" has put into effect when in reality it's just people moving to where the rent is cheaper..

You do realize that Brooklyn was originally VERY white. Up until the 1960s even Bed-Stuy was white.

Populations change/fluctuate, it's all W/E. You know how many white folk complained when Flatbush started seeing an influx of Black residents?

The real conflict is between the haves and the have nots. Their race just happens to be a byproduct.

Pretty much. To me, race isn't even the big issue anymore. Its all about $$ and like you said, those that have it and those that don't...
