Is Rakim really the G.O.A.T.?

I see where some of you guys are coming from but the argument that "he paved the way" is flawed...I mean grandmaster flash paved the way for dj'sbut then had kids like A Trak doin stuff he was doin in his mid twenties at age 13..u can agrue Dondi paved the way for dudes doin top to bottoms on cars butthere's ppl out there better than dondi..I understand what he did ill never take that away..its just I dunno I can't really listen to much rakimbesides "warming up kane" and "paid in full"...Nas is my g.o.a.t but I can't knock someone for sayin Kim or G rap or Big or Jay..itstoo close mon *dylan voice*

Well said

You can't take anything away from Rakim and respect what he has done for hip hop but there are close to 10 MCs who you could make a case for as the GOAT

The difference is that Grand Master Flash sounds dated, Rakim on the other side is timeless, you could take the way he was rapping on Know theLedge or In the Ghetto and put it on tape %%+% would still be relevant. His flow is timeless.

Rakim= GOAT

Changed the way MC's rapped, before you had cats rapping like... I got a dog a cat a mouse a rat/A fly he wont die and a little gnat

To....

Im just an addict addicted to music
Maybe its a habit, I gotta use it
Even if its jazz or the quiet storm
I hook a beat up convert it in a hip-hop form
Write a rhyme in graffitti in every show you see me in
Deep concentration cuz Im no comedian

I take 7 mcs put em in a line
And add 7 more brothas who think they can rhyme
Well, itll take 7 more before I go for mine
And thats 21 mcs ate up at the same time

I came in the door, I said it before
I never let the mic magnatize me no more
But its biting me, fighting me, inviting me to rhyme
I cant hold it back, Im looking for the line,
Taking off my coat, clearing my throat
My rhyme will be kicking it until I hit my last note

I hate this crap. Rakim didn't invent complicated rhyme schemes, you had poets doing that #%%@ in the 13th century. Julius Erving revolutionized the above the rim game, was he a better dunker than Jordan...? I don't think so.

Oh and what a shock, a kid with the name Jiggaman doesn't believe NaS is the GOAT......

You gotta understand that No rapper before him was complex like him. Nobody before him flowed to a beat so smooth. And on top of that Paid In Full reshaped hiphop

So basically anyone that revolutions something is automatically the best at their given craft? That seems like a load of bollocks to me. Archie > Google bythat logic.

Oh and what a shock, a kid with the name Jiggaman doesn't believe NaS is the GOAT......

I don't think anyone is arguing against anything that you just stated. It's more of someone like NaS took what Rakim was doing added his own style toit and made it better. That's more of the argument.

.u can agrue Dondi paved the way for dudes doin top to bottoms on cars but there's ppl out there better than dondi.
Props for even knowing that name.

Personally I try to avoid the "paved the way" argument. I look at it more as what he did relative to the time it was done and influences. The wayhe broke out in his day was way more advanced than what others did in they're time....Nas came very close though.

Someone in here said age plays a factor and I kinda agree. It's one thing to listen to his material now in an era where we're already used that styleof rhyming, and it's another when you actually experienced it first hand. The latter lets you understand/appreciate more what he did.

Rakim to rap is kinda like Jesus to the bible. There's B.R. and A.R. The difference between the music B.R. and A.R. is ridiculous.

I give Nas all the props in the world but he's not on the level of Rakim as far a lyricist and overall artist

I dont think there is such a thing as the GOAT in any music genre, but each genre has its greats. Rakim was one of the greatest rappers of all time, lyricallyhe was insane. Dude didn't need to fill up his lines with cursing and had material for days. I think that "The 18th Letter" is one of the moreunder-rated rap albums out there.

Personally I think Biggie, Rakim and Nas are top 3.

If only him and Dre could've made an album together

As an OVERALL artist Rakim is better than NaS...? Really?

He hasn't dropped an album in nearly a decade....

It doesn't matter if he hasn't dropped nothing since 99, OVERALL he's still a better artist than Nas

And the last really great Nas album was Stillmatic, no album album since than maybe God Son has any replay value

Rakim isn't the GOAT. He's definately a great MC but, like he said, (to me MC mean's move the crowd).
Nas isn't the GOAT. Only reason he's still around is the so call music beef with Jay. I mean, AZ has a similar style to Nas and where is he?

was he not the first to do multi's? i was almost sure he was the first to rhyme multiple syllables, and he explained how he did it when he started.

While I do think that Nas is the GOAT, I wouldn't be mad at anyone who thought Rakim is the GOAT. Personally, he's my #2.

Rakim was so far ahead of his time, he changed the entire way everyone rapped, and he was still better than everyone else.

When was the LAST good Rakim album?? I mean with Nas he has been in the conversation of the BEST MC since '94, its now 2009, 15 years later and he'sstill in top form, Unititled was brilliant. Rakim has always, and probabaly will always be in the conversation, but his reign on the top wasn't really thatlong. & I'm not willing to say he spent his entire prime as the undisputed best of his generation, though the same could be said about Nas(to anextent). But IMO since 01, Nas reclaimed his spot as the best and has just been building on that since . . . I had B.I.G. As my GOAT for the longest, untilUntitled dropped, it got to a point where Nas had made waaay too much good music to not be the BEST. I feel Nas carried that lyricism torch that Rakim held, and took it to the next level . . . But then again I grew up on Nas, & all the other greats from that generation (Class of 93/94/95) so I KNOW I have abias to a certain degree . . .

Nas +%%* was more impactful because I was an active part of hip hop as he was making history, where with Rakim and his generation, it was like goin back intohistory, so it never really had the same affect . . . Don't get me wrong, the music from the class of 87/88/89 still is AMAZING, on any given day I canthrow on a Rakim album, or a Kane joint . . . +%%* I was listenin to Edutainment & The (OG) Blueprint yesterday . . . But its hard to put some of the musicin proper context without an understanding of what was goin on at the time, all we can do is read about the 80s and listen to the music, but I remember the 90squite vivdly, I feel like my fav MCs provided a picture for the generation. With each album is a seperate portrait, from NaS to BIG to Wu Tang Clan . . .
