Police: 5 children, father die in murder-suicide
GRAHAM, Wash. - A father apparently shot to death five of his children, ages 7 to 16, at their mobile home and then killed himself near a casino miles away, police said Saturday.

Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff, called it a domestic violencesituation and a murder-suicide.

"We believe they all died of gunshot wounds," Troyer said.

Police found the father's body early Saturday in his still-running car near the Muckleshoot Casinoin Auburn, about 30 miles south ofSeattle. He had apparently killed himself with a rifle, although no note was left in the car, AuburnPolice Sgt. Scott Near said.

Later in the day, Pierce County deputies checked the mobile home, which is about 20 miles southeast ofthe casino, and found four of the children dead in their beds and the fifth in the bathroom.

Neighbors in the Deer Run mobile home park, a neat, well-kept community nestled among toweringevergreens, were shocked and weeping at the news.

"How could something like this happen?" asked Mary Riplinger, whose kids were playmates of the slain children. "Everyone's asking: Whydid he do it? It's not right."

The mother of the victims was not at home, Troyer said. Deputies were called to the mobile home after a relative stopped by and saw a child lying motionlesson a bed through a window, but couldn't get anyone to answer the door.

He said investigators believe the husband and wife were not estranged.

"Clearly she's been very traumatized," Troyer told The News Tribune of Tacoma. "You kind of get hardened to seeing people who are killed because of their own badactions. But these kids died through no fault of their own. This is something you never want to see."

Authorities did not release the names of the family, but Troyer identified the dead children as four girls and a 7-year-old boy.

Another neighbor, Dale Lund, toldThe Seattle Times the 7-year-old boy who was killed played at times with his grandson and the boys sharedthe same school bus stop and attended the same elementary school together.

He said the dead boy played in his own yard most of the time.

"They pretty much kept to themselves over there," Lund said.

Dozens of investigators were on the scene trying to reconstruct the crime and discover a motive.
Police ID Calif. Family In Apparent Murder-Suicide
TERRY COLLINS, Associated Press Writer

Posted: 4:06 am PDT March 31, 2009Updated: 6:43 pm PDT March 31, 2009
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The man who gunned down his two children and three other relatives in an apparentmurder-suicide had been helping those relatives settle into the area after a recent move from India, police said Tuesday. Investigators did not have a motivefor Devan Kalathat's rampage Sunday night, which left six people dead and one critically injured at his home in an upscale neighborhood of Santa Clara. They said they were exploring the possibility of a family dispute, but they did not believe it was financially motivated. Police Lt. Phil Cooke said Kalathat,a 42-year-old engineer for Yahoo Inc., legally purchased a .45 semiautomatic handgun about two weeks ago, around the same that his brother-in-law arrived inthe United States from India with his 25-year-old wife and 11-month-old daughter. Police said Kalathat used that weapon and another handgun purchased inFebruary during the shootings that killed brother-in-law Ashok Appu Poothemkandi, 35; sister-in-law Suchitra Sivaraman, 25; the couple's daughter AhanaAshok; Kalathat's son Akhil Dev, 11, and daughter Negha Dev, 4. Kalathat's wife, whose name was not released, survived but remained in criticalcondition Tuesday with multiple gunshot wounds, Cooke said. Kalathat changed his name from Raghavan Devarajan after moving to the United States about 15 yearsago. He was found on the home's top floor, dead from a self-inflicted wound. Both handguns were found at the scene. Yahoo officials confirmed that Kalathathad been worked as an analytics engineer since 2004 but declined to comment further Tuesday. Cooke said there was no reason to believe that Kalathat had beenin danger of losing his job. The family had recently moved from a modest apartment in Sunnyvale to the tony Santa Clara community of Rivermark, a plannedcommunity about seven miles northwest of San Jose with a shopping center, playgrounds and a mix of town houses, condominiums and Spanish-style houses that gofor $1 million. His children had been enrolled in a nearby private school. Abhilash Appu, 32, a brother-in-law of Kalathat, told the San Jose Mercury News thathe had no idea why the bright, quiet man would turn on his family. Ashok Kumar Sinha of the Consulate Generals of India in San Francisco said it helped policenotify relatives and would be working with the family to claim the bodies.

Having lived in a lower-class trailer park, this is no surprise to me. Some of my former neighbors looked miserable six out of seven days of the week. Allthe kids in our neighborhood knew were either sports or gangs...

I wish God could stop some of this endless hate in our world...

We need to disarm these people. Everyone should be required to undergo a strict psychology assessment before guns are allowed to the public.

I'm here living all good but it just saddens me hearing about a shooting not even 2 days apart from each other. Is there some sort of curse, or virusrunning rampant? Someone make it stop.. damn. R.I.P. to those kids.
