Sprained Ankle

Make sure to do proprioceptive exercises once you are able to. An example of this would be a wobble board. This will help prevent re-injuring it as frequentlyas you do. That being said, it's important to allow your ankle to heal properly and gradually place weight on it and progress to more aggressive rehab whenpossible. Soft tissue work and stretching are also of great importance. This will allow you to maintain good range of motion of your ankle which will help inmany ways. As a chiropractic student, I'm biased....and will suggest you see one to make sure you have proper joint functioning and to allow your ankle toheal properly. Hope that helps.

Stop wearing stiff high top shoes. The ankle joint is built formobility. Also stretch your calf muscle daily. Go to tnation and read Building Indestructible Ankles.

But OP, don't give up. What kind of supports are u usin? U gotta remember the level of support they provide. I bout some from !##@#, forget the name, but they $25 a piece and they have gel cushions around the ankle for added support. Feel great. I used to still hurt my ankle w/ the neoprene type ones. work on gettin ya ankles stronger and some better hoop kicks, don't stop hoopin.

Yes I am very familiar with proprioceptive exercises. I have a wobble board similar to this
wobble_balance_board.jpg
and I will begin to use it soon for rehab. I have been to a chiropractor and have found them to be more helpful than doctors. I went once formy prior ankle injury and he popped or re-adjusted my ankle into place (feels amazing). Man it feels good when they adjust your back as well

. Thanks for the advice man

it doesnt matter what type of shoes you wear... high tops or lows.. if you land on someones foot you're gonna roll your ankle no matter what.. i heard thatwearing braces when you dont need it, makes your ankles weak. once you get used to it, you cant play without it because your ankle go so accustomed to it..

warm is better than cold... cold doesnt do anything for you. if you get punched in the mouth, what will cold do for you? nothing... hot will make the swellinggo down.

and you cant watch where you land, especially if you are tired, your body reacts slower than what your brain wants you to do...which causes injuries

where do you get all this false information? the FIRST thing you do when you get popped in the mouth is grab an ice pack (or a cold steak from the freezer inthe old days) $+$ makes you think heat is going to reduce swelling?

University of Michigan (and everyone else who knows what they're talking about) says you're wrong.

i feel your pain bro, played high school football for 4 years, started at left tackle for the last 2 and i've never been so beat up in my life. i'm5'11, 235 and for the most part in good shape. but random, unexpected injuries mess things up. junior year, pulled both hip flexors, tore a ligament in myright shoulder and nearly dislocated my left knee. went to rehab after the season but got worse next year. dislocated both shoulders, regularly, hip flexorsagain, sprained knee and to top it off sprained the left ankle 3rd to last game of the year. still feeling all of it, but it was worth it.

gonna miss football :'(

For the first 48 hours ICE is ESSENTIAL. Follow R.I.C.E.

I don't think applying heat after a sprain/strain is going to do much. Apply heat during the recovering/physio stage of the sprain.

Im thinking of using less and less tape as my ankle gets stronger.. I too also heard using tape wastes away your muscles.

Damn sorry to hear that man. Let it heal 100% before you start ballin again. It'll be hard, but ankle injuries are serious business...

I hate when dudes step under you on a jump shot, word to bruce bowen. #%%@ gets me heated

i broke my ankle/fibula about 4 months ago, still healing.

Thanks for all the advice. Went to the doctor today and pretty much told me exactly what was said in this thread (minus the heat part). I got x-rays andit's a second degree sprain, nothing too serious. I'll be out for 4-6 weeks. Right now I have a soft cast on that I got to keep on for a fewdays.Walking around campus today in crutches was horrible. This is how I feel: "My body could stand the crutches but my mind couldn'tstand the sideline ~Michael Jordan" For everyone out there that feels my pain, stay positive and motivated. Get the proper rest and come back strongerthan ever, thats what I'm going to do.

Because that's horrible advice. That's the exact opposite of what you want to do with an injury.

But, good to hear that it'll only be about a month and some change. Stay strong.

funny how all of you say i'm wrong and all.. but that's cool... i'm the only one in this thread that can walk and run after a week and a halfafter spraining my ankle... i hear all of you being out for 4-6 weeks.. i never understood how come people could have ankle injuries for so long.. oh well...and i get ankle sprains just like all of you...

so when you get sore from working out, what it better for you? a hot shower, because that will improve your bloodflow, soreness will go away sooner and thatsame goes for spraining your ankle and letting the swelling go down.

and all that garbage about the shoes, is all mental.. high tops or low tops, it doesnt matter when you sprain your ankle you do, no matter what shoes youwear. in order to get injured less often, make sure that you are in good shape, cause when you get tired quickly, your body reacts slower than usual, and thiswill increase the risk of injuries.

post pics of your ankle while sprained. if you're running after a week it was probably a first degree or not even a sprain just a "tweak" or"twist" with no ligament damage or stretching. you must be at least under 20 if not younger and be exaggerating on your "sprains"

and once again I don't understand how heat will helped when swelling is caused by inFLAMMATION, when your ankle is inFLAMED you might consider someanti-inFLAMMATORY medication and ice.

why would i have pictures of my own ankle? like everyone else when you play basketball and you land on someone's foot you roll your ankle and have yourentire weight on it. to the point that you can't even stand or put your toes on the ground cause it hurts.

so i know what i'm talking about. and what does age have to do with it? dont come at me with stupid things saying that i'm under 20 or i'mexagerrating my sprains. because i'm older than 20.

i didnt come here to get flamed by you, cause who are you to tell me what is best? since when did you become a doctor? and who cares if you are? thatdoesn't mean you're always right, and in my case you're not!

i'm just here telling what i do and what is best for me. besides if you want to have an ankle sprain for 4 weeks or longer that is your problem. i rathernot, so i'm going keep on doing like i said before, cause i'll heal sooner than any of you in this post.

Ive found that the older I get the longer it takes to heal, but I now do ankle stretching like alot of you guys have mentioned and found that it makes a bigdifference on my ankles taking the little rolls and such. I have not had a bad one in a few years (Knock on wood) but have definatley seen a difference sincestreching my ankles and calves, only thing is now my ankles crack like crazy when I stretch them. Anyway good luck coming back and definatley wait till itshealed and stronger so that you dont rehurt it worse.

you think you found some sort of magic healing technique that has eluded the entire medical community? heat doesn't reduce swelling. what we have here isyou thinking that a tiny bump on your ankle is a bad sprain, that minor roll you're talking about that "everyone else" does is NOTHING. youobviously have never suffered a second or third degree sprain, and most people won't, it's not an "everyone else" thing. a first degreesprain can cause unbearable pain but it doesn't mean its cause the ligament damage that a second/third can.

a tiny bump? dude please stop talking.. you act like you are the only one that had a serious ankle sprain and i never had... probably been playing basketballlonger than you... but you know what... you win.. if that makes you feel better.. i just know that i can play after 2 weeks.. or you know what you can do? letme know when you sprain your ankle.. i'll tell you what to do and then after you've done it, you'll come to the conclusion that i was right.. imean what else do you have to lose right? besides cutting your healing time in half..

Current medical advice states you should resume normal activity as soon as possible. That doesn't mean you can start playing basketball again, butdon't be afraid to start putting weight on it and start walking again. Doctors no longer recommend immobilizing the ankle for a long period of time unlessit's broken. The reason for this is that walking helps reduce swelling, as the operation of your foot pumps blood out of the ankle and back into your body.Ever wonder why you can walk around all day without your blood collecting in your feet?

yeah well, that's easier said than done.. and i doubt it that they mean an entire day walking.. i think they mean short periods.. long periods is too muchfor someone that is still in healing process
