Not sure why youre asking that as if anyone here designed them? But I'm sure its for lockdown fit. Dozens of nike shoes with zippers havelaces as well - Shox VC and Flightposite KG come to mind.

And to all those saying theyre ugly - I agree! Theyre not the most attractive shoes. but its function > beauty in this case.

Just thought I'd share some gold medal winning kicks...
 
Wow. Thats a nice find. I could see myself rockin them wit jeans. I know u wouldn't see anything but

It might not look all that attractive when the sides start to yellow.
 
Yes, I remember I watched one fight & saw the guy wearing them & thought it was pretty cool. (can't remember the name of the fighter)

But I didn't know that the whole USA team had them though! Thanks for the info!

...btw, the dude I watched who was wearing them ...lost!

The team had the option of wearing these...and also the Roy Jones shoe.
 
Yea, remember when they were posted before the Olympics. Was pretty much a love/hate shoe prolly grew on a lot of ppl now
