Why are black schools held in such high regard?

What they are now are colleges with important historical background. You still make no sense as to why you have a problem with them today.
The schools aren't and shouldn't disappear off the face of the earth just because Black people are allowed in other schools now. That history staysforever.
You acting like minorities should completely forget their own history and culture since were "accepted" now. Living through these injusticesincluding lack of availability to education is what started our culture in the first place. How you think we became "African hyphen Americans"? Whendid that start?
If more black people realized and remembered they weren't even allowed to learn how to read book let alone sit in a classroom we'd be better off todayand taking education more seriously.
You telling people to wake up, and you the one sitting here asleep.

Hopefully you aren't talking about me. I didn't forget the history. I understand why they are here, and I'm not saying the should disappear fromthe earth. We do people act like they ARE...not were the best thing for black students? Why do they get a pass for subpar schooling? Why am I not black enoughand why am I 2 uppity because I don't go to a black school? Why when I youtube "Howard" a video of people dancing the cafateria pops up? If whitepeople want to do that at there school fine, but as for me and mine I hold black people to a higher standard becasue we need to be held to a higher standard toprove ourselves in this world, sucks but thats how it is. I don't want our schools to be known for booty shaking, I want them to be known for groundbreaking, and sorry they aren't living up to that. Yes white schools get a pass because...frankly I don't care about their advancement.

I wasn't talking to you, my reply wouldn't make sense if I was referring to anything you been saying.

FSU was an all girl school, should we respect that history and keep it all girls? I'm not saying the history should be forgotten and the school abandoned.I'm saying they should be integrated, hmmm when have I heard that before?

You can make the case that African studies should be required learning at all schools or whatever but keeping people separated isn't going to make anythingbetter. The history you're holding on to is deadly. You should be celebrating equality being able to attend any school you want by doing it, not by keepingsegregated.

but !!$ do I know I'm not black.

The schools aren't segregated.
Its an entire cultures history. They can't do anything about it, but learn from it, which is exactly what I've been saying to you.

Plus you don't have to deal with all the white people using affirmative action as a scapegoat for you getting in (even though most schools stopped using it ages ago). Everyone I know that went to black colleges left with a wide number of contacts, and connections. I think the main thing is the fact that it is a historically black university that has been around for a long time, and is competitive and they train you to be the best you can, and teachers actually care about making you into somebody because they don't want their school getting bad press, and because they care about the progression of our people. Thats the main reason blacks haven't been as successful as other racial groups (because we don't know how to work together, we're always hating on someone). I just talked to this married couple from Atlanta while I was on vacation last week and the wife had went to Howard, and the Husband went to a prestigious "white school" (for lack of a better term) and he really regretted not going to an HBCU because his wife left with a bunch of contacts that continue to benefit her to this day, as well as being pushed to be the best by her professors.
l
But the BEST black school is only ranked 102. Think about the rest

I'm black and I understand that HBCUs serve a purpose, but honestly if you are an African American with intelligence and potential I suggest you don't attend an HBCU. Greatness inspires Greatness. Competition brings out the best in people. If you're not around the absolute best you can be around, how can you reach your full potential?

The only reason I would have attended Howard or Morehouse is simply to attain a 3.8+ GPA and go to Gradschool, Law School, or Med School.

I guess your right, Oprah Winfrey, Thurgood Marshall, Dr. King, Nikki Giovanni, and Langston Hughes among others couldn't reach their full potential

. It's not the school that counts, it's your individual effort at that school that plays the largest role in whether or not you succeed.
Don't kid yourself. Your school allows you to put your foot in the door. Your effort gets you through.

Right on Tk. The schools aren't doing the segregating, the students are doing the segregating. Every culture has history, doesn't mean you need to havea school for everyone.

The real problem I have is people specifically aiming to go to HBCUs for a reason such as what OP's saying. The schools can't do much to un-segregate,and while they're trying, they could do more. Really, it's up to non-black students to apply there and to black people to stop looking at other schoolsas 'white institutions' like my man earlier in the thread.

It'll be a long process to integrate the schools to any significant degree, and I don't have an answer on how to get it done other than raisingstandards and making them into better schools than they even are (e.g. FAMU needs to be a better school than FSU to get it integrated otherwise only peoplelooking to go to HBCUs will go there).

I'm sorry but you sound stupid. Its like that in some way at every school. Thats what cracks me up about cats acting like other races orhell schools that aren't hbcu's don't partake in the same stuff. This is why blacks as a whole will neverget anywhere. Young kids in general going to party and show off for the opposite sex or whoever they trying to attract.

I just don't agree with this at all. This isn't sports where you want to be on a team that gives you the best chance to win a NationalChampionship. What happens as far as your education is up to you and only you. Blaming anything else is in the words of Ben Wallace "The acts of acoward"

^ Sums it up.

For me, it's what I wanted, I got it & wouldn't trade it for jack.

This is only half true. A 4.0 at Harvard > a 4.0 at Howard. At the end of the day, the prestige of your school matters along with the work you put in,simple as that.

damn nt has a lot of ignorant people. For those who say hbcu's are not diverse, i go to Morehouse and we have over 35 countries represented here. Diversityisn't just skin color, we have white dudes who go here and we have white professors . I have a cousin who graduated from Tuskegee and works for NASA in dc,she says a lot of other people who went to HBCU'S work there as well. I have another cousin who graduated from FAMU and is a manager at walgreens, and isabout to get her own store making over 6 figures. What's funny is that blacks are more critical of HBCU's then white people. Bunch of house #%$%%$.When corporations say they want diversity in the work place, where do you think they go?

I had a great college experience and I'd give everything I own to be back @ Jackson State as a freshman right now.

arent you black?

if so why do you speak about african-americans as if you arent one of us?

I got accepted at Hampton, but they didn't have my major (it changed anyways).

Going to a mostly white school thats in between 2 HBCU's was the best. You gotta venture out. As far as the social aspect, college is what you make it.

I will say that from the times I've been on campus at the hbcu's while I was still in school it's a whole different feel....events, parties, student commons, hell just even walkin around on campus.

i didnt compare you to anybody. I just asked you if you were black, and if you are why do you refer to african-americans as if you are notafrican-american yourself? you really do have alot of self-hatred within you, but hey to each his own.

I've heard several horror stories. Staying on top of your paperwork is a MUST. After paying so much for education, it doesn't seem like it should be anissue. Hampton is like 30gs aint it?
