Why are black schools held in such high regard?

hmm... i'd like to know how you came to that conclusion...
From what I see and its almost the same everywhere I go as far as black people are concerned. I actually stated why in the post you quoted mefrom but I'll spell it out better. I really think we have to many people that consciously or subconsciously don't want to see other blacks make it. I'm not saying other races don't have it cause they do but from what I've noticed not at the same level. Hell I want to be wrong and hope thingschange but its hard when cats are wired to think one way esp alot of cats that were raised in poverty. You don't have to agree thats your right but ifyou've never saw it I consider you lucky and a bit sheltered. Aren't you supposed to be practicing or something?

I'm black myself and go to a majority white school(Roll Tide). And I wouldn't touch an HBCU unless it was (Howard, Hampton, Morehouse, TSU, FAMU and 1or two others) all the other ones are kinda ehh

I know a lot of black people that passed on HBCUs to go to U of A.

alot of black people are still stuck in their black world. All their friends are black, they are scared of white people, and think everyone is out to get them.

I had a friend in highschool that got accepted to Princeton, she got alot of crap from people for not going to Howard.

It also doesn't help that many HBCUs(Read clark ATL) are pretty much HS pt.2(or so I've been told).

I urge against it not to many students past the State bar exam.

Really depends from state to state...One good thing about Howard Law is their career services dept. Almost 90% have jobs lined up after graduation, and(private sector) average salary coming out is $130k.

Plus you don't have to deal with all the white people using affirmative action as a scapegoat for you getting in (even though most schools stopped using it ages ago). Everyone I know that went to black colleges left with a wide number of contacts, and connections. I think the main thing is the fact that it is a historically black university that has been around for a long time, and is competitive and they train you to be the best you can, and teachers actually care about making you into somebody because they don't want their school getting bad press, and because they care about the progression of our people. Thats the main reason blacks haven't been as successful as other racial groups (because we don't know how to work together, we're always hating on someone). I just talked to this married couple from Atlanta while I was on vacation last week and the wife had went to Howard, and the Husband went to a prestigious "white school" (for lack of a better term) and he really regretted not going to an HBCU because his wife left with a bunch of contacts that continue to benefit her to this day, as well as being pushed to be the best by her professors.

But the BEST black school is only ranked 102. Think about the rest

I'm black and I understand that HBCUs serve a purpose, but honestly if you are an African American with intelligence and potential I suggest you don't attend an HBCU. Greatness inspires Greatness. Competition brings out the best in people. If you're not around the absolute best you can be around, how can you reach your full potential?

The only reason I would have attended Howard or Morehouse is simply to attain a 3.8+ GPA and go to Gradschool, Law School, or Med School.

I guess your right, Oprah Winfrey, Thurgood Marshall, Dr. King, Nikki Giovanni, and Langston Hughes among others couldn't reach their full potential

. It's not the school that counts, it's your individual effort at that school that plays the largest role in whether or not you succeed.

Basically... And Downtown 43.. there is a difference between what the students represent once they get into the school, and what image the institution wants tohold (I'm referring to your comment when you stated back then HBCU's stood for something)

And for those who feel that HBCU's should be abolished....I'm puzzled.

They don't promote segregation. You can be of whatever race and attend an HBCU. Just like you can recieve a scholarship from United Negro College Fund, nomatter what race you are, as long as that money is used for a school upon which UNCF is sponsered by.

It depends on what you do with yourself once you get into an institution, and unfortunately, many students have come in and tarnished reputations at manyHBCU's.

My sister was one of those intelligent black high school students many of you speak of. Graduated from a prestigious private high school, St. Stephens &St. Agnes, went on to Boston College, graduated in the top 25% of her class. She now works for American Heart Association as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill and isworking towards her master's in Public Policy at HOWARD. She could have gone to American, GW, Mason, UVA, or Georgetown.

It depends on what you go to school for and what you want to study. Nobody should look down on you if you choose to go to a non-HBCU. So OP my rant wasn'tto try to convince you to go to one. Just stating that it is what you do with your education no matter what school you go to.

Hell my step father went to Morgan State, got into Georgetown to complete his Dentistry studies, and is now regarded as one of the TOP U.S. denstists. But itall started at Morgan, case and point...

Schools don't always make you....it's what you do with yourself champ.

Real talk. People are showing their age in this thread. No one should look down on you regardless of the school you attended. As long as you areout there trying to better yourself who am I to look down on you just because you did not attend a school I deem prestigious?

Like people have mentioned college truly is what you make of it.

Employers are like NFL teams.Culpepper/J. Rice/TO/Rothlisberger didn't attend D-I powerhouses. Having been on the recruiting end in corporate America, employers scout top talent from ALL sorts of schools; they would rather take a person who busted their butt at a Morehouse and achieved a 3.8 over a Princetongrad who smoked kush all day who struggled to get a 2.5 GPA.

There was a great article in Smart Money a few months ago breaking down the ROI on colleges nationally and most "prestigious" schools faired poorly. Not saying that prestigious, non-HCBU schools aren't worth attending, I'm just saying that they are not an automatic gateway towards asuccessful/prosperous career.

I didn't attend a HBCU btw.

cosign to the fullest...you can see it a lot on NT.

Never knew blacks were scared of whites.

Scared and choosing not to trust them based on the beliefs of their parents/grandparents/ancestors are two different things.

I personally don't feel either way

Me and my ex were having a discussion about this very thing back when we were together...She thought the idea of HBCU's were Dumb. i tried to explain toher that they are just as good as the university she was attending at the time, and she refused to believe me..Imagine her surprise when she found out thatalot of her teachers graduated from the very HBCU she was frowning upon! lol..and not only that, her teachers taught some of the very same courses on thecommunity college level as well..

Like a lot of NT'ers already said, it doesn't matter what college you go to it matters what you do while your in college. I went to an HBCU, NorfolkState University. After graduating I became a System's Engineer.

I am 27 and never been to college, but that is all I hear from people that went to Howard or the other popular HBCU's...that it is like going to the DMVeveryday.

I would think that everyone is somewhat mature and striving for the best since so much money is involved, that everything would be 20 times smoother than highschool,am I being naive or...?

I'm thinking a lot of people would scream racism...
same thing with BET.. what if there were a WET and ALL white shows. (disregarding the fact that it used to actually be this way)

Equality should mean integrated not segregated
