NT any words of advice on my college situation

the first thing i will say is... do NOT go to Penn State if you're a minority.

and even if you aren't, i would go to Maryland. it has a strong academic reputation on the East Coast, great social scene, sports are always popping(especially ACC basketball), and you said you already know people there... that will make it a LOT easier to make a social network of friends from your firstday. as opposed to going to another school, where the kids from PA or NJ high schools would already have their groups, and you wouldn't know anybody whenyou first get there.

and Maryland is right next to DC. unlike Penn State, which is in the middle of nowhere. and i don't know much about Rutgers location, but i don't thinkthey are within a 10-minute radius of a city as good as DC.

Yea i'm gonna visit penn state tomorrow just so i can say i didnt rule out all my options. You guys think i should bother visiting rutgers?

Which campus are you visiting? (Rutgers)

Take a visit to each. They are all pretty similar academically but if you even have a slight clue to what your major is look into how the departments rank ateach university.

The problem isn't tuition costs its just these feelings i have about each college when i think about going there. I'm leaning towards Maryland right now but so many people from my school are going there i feel like it will just be 4 extra years of my high school all over again. I hear that Penn State is in the middle of no where but i was supposed to go visit but i just didn't want to go visit because i feel like thats just not where i want to go. And Rutgers i havent even planned to visit or anything but i havent completely ruled it out. So any words of advice on this situation?

Go to Marquette. Being Jesuit has nothing to do with it. My girl goes to Loyola in Chicago and she's not Jesuit. It's really not an issue.

I'd say go to Maryland. I was in a similar situation to you 4 years ago. I was between Rutgers (20 mins from my house) or Drexel in Philadelphia. Half mygraduating class went to Rutgers, I went to Drexel cause I wanted a new experince. I had fun but I went home a lot to hang out with old HS freinds at Rutgers.4 of my good high school freinds got a house at Rutgers and partying there has been awsome cause its just like back in day. I do regret not going to Rutgersbut I think thats because Drexel is so diffrent (no football team, crappy basketball, in philadelphia which is huge, just doesn't feel like college).

One of my roomates is from Maryland regrets not going to UMD. I'd say go to UMD, meet new people and stay close to the people you were really cool with inHS. It doesn't hurt to visit but UMD, Rutgers, and Penn State will prob all give you the same college experince its really just location and if you likeyour hometown and Maryland why leave?

havent read any other replies so i might repeat others.

will never feel like an extension of high school, unless you live at mom and dads and take classes. you will tons of new people. i see people from my highschool here and havent said a word to them in 3 years. no if you have troubles meeting new people, or you are going to live alone, then it will help knowing alot of people at college.

As far as penn state being in the middle of no where: 30K people on one campus, there will always be something to do. i go to school in farmville, va andtheres always something to do.

you also got to know what u want from a school, and u can get that by visiting. i knew i wanted to go to a small school and the major i wanted. i was acceptedto schools that have a large population and campus, and knew i didnt want that. i went to a place that i thought fufilled my needs and i enjoy it very much.

go to Maryland...

as someone already pointed out, the schools are pretty much on the same plane academically. The difference is the in state tuition. trust me, fin aid is one ofthe most important parts of college. The tuition at Penn State is ridiculous, esp. for a state school (highest one in the nation, i think). Do your parents afavor (and yourself, who would probably have to pay back those loans), and go to Maryland....good social scence, good athletics (esp. basketball), and prettygood academics.

go to Maryland. Don't think of it as an extension of high school; its too different for the most part
