How Has The Recession Changed You?

There have been recessions before and there will be others in the future. The nature of this recession is unique because it was driven by the failure andfraud of institutions, the response was failure and fraud by banks and government and we face down inflation, government expropriation and general instabilityin the future. As a result I am and will continue to act differently, through out my life.

- I have resolved to save a much, much larger share of my lifetime earning and when I save, I will always have some of my wealth in overseas, non dollardenominated accounts and assets, I will buy more and more gold and silver and I will always keep a good chunk of cash and gold hidden under the house. On topof that, I want to have my house paid off as soon as I can.

- Family has become more important to me. I had always loved my family and socialized with my siblings and my cousins but now family is also becoming a unit ofprotection and economic security. I can really now understand why people, who lived in unstable countries and/or dangerous and/or impoverished places, care somuch about extended family, they are they are the only institutions you can trust. My dad is from the Third World, as are the parents of many of our friends. As kids we hated how they tended to be tight with money, worried about us excessively and made us always go to frequent family gatherings. Now, I and myfriends really can understand why our parents act how they do.

- Over the years, i have many books my people who lived in or through war, famine, civil unrest, tyrannical government, economic collapses, epidemics and othercalamities. I could understand, in an academically sense, what was happening, but books about chaos, tyranny and mass anxiety simply could not resonate deeplyto a person who only knew optimism and stability. While this recession is nothing next to something like the Holocaust or the Black Death, the events of thelast year have shown how quickly what looks like a very good situation can be imperiled and destroyed. It also has shown my why writers and thinkers from thepast were so focused on stability and avoiding chaos.

Has anyone else been changed by this recession and more to the point the nature of this particular recession? Has anyone else gained better appreciation of howunstable things really are? Do you feel closer with your family then you had a few years ago? Does anyone else now have a better understanding of what theirimmigrant parents say or what writers from the past have to say? Has anyone else been changed in other ways over the last year or so.

grown more depressed, no emo.
i try not to think of my financial situation if at all possible
if i do i can't sleep.

It hasnt changed my financial situation that much.... but people around me situations that have worsened it has affected our relationship.

being laid off from August 08 to April 7 when I went back to work has changed my spending alot. I also learned to really budget, if i dont need it or if i have2nd thoughts then I definitely dont need it. It really has taught me how to save.

What has changed? I got a new job, am making more money, am giving more money, and saving more money. I'm looking to take advantage of those in lessfortunate positions and get a better deal on my mortgage, and help out those in need.

Through the recession, I've been a lot more diligent in paying off my debts so that I can live like no one else, so some day, I can live like no one else.

not much...i wasn't making any real money before...but i will be working harder on saving more...hopefully i'll be able to get a cheap condo if thiskeeps up...

*Props*

Family Priority #1.

When my father was switching jobs I had to help out with the bills a little.

Besides that, more SBs.

I moved back in with my fam when my lease expired last year instead of throwing money away renting while trying to save for a house. It sucks but I figure inexchange for some freedom, I get to save more money for a place and at the same time help my family out by renting a room from them.

My company did massive layoffs 3 weeks ago. It sucks seeing people get walked out after 10, 15 even 20 years of service. People were crying. Even my boss gotaxed. It was a reality check. I'm budgeting myself to pay off all my debts ASAP. Small sacrifices I guess to prepare for the long run.
