The original image is a photograph taken in 1945 after/during the Battle of Iwo Jima, a small island of relative insignificance especially since there wasnever an attempt to attack the Japanese mainland. The photograph is actually of the second raising of the flag by US Marines. There was a lot of controversyafter the photograph was used in a public relations/war bond drive and gained mass popularity. They misidentified people in the photo etc etc. And while thepeople in the photo are probably not even alive anymore, that picture meant a lot to a lot of people and I personally don't agree with the using of their,or any other military servicemen's liking for that purpose.
The First Amendment to the Constitution allows people to make such renderings but I see it as disgracing a national monument.
