Howdy,

I am in an urgent career "fiasco" situation! Will make this as short as possible while trying to maintain a coherent message.

I have to respond to an internship offer today, by 4PM. Although I wouldn't mind this internship (it is paid), I was able to interview with another companythis past month.

The other company, a very prestigious investment bank, has not offered me an internship, although I have progressed through all stages of the recruitment phaseand finished up my last interview yesterday.

Now, how do I go about making a decision as I see three possibilities:

One, I reject the first company and get rejected by the investment bank... have nothing to look forward to.

Two, I accept the first company and get rejected by the investment bank... all fine and dandy.

Three, I accept the first company and get accepted by the investment bank... mind you, I am highly interested in joining this investment bank as the perks arebetter and job security is there, especially post graduation (may 2010, considering I do a swell job).

I have already asked for an extension to the first company and today is the extension's deadline (hence: 4PM).

What I don't want to do is have to reject the offer I accepted.

I really do need help and will def. check with my career center today for more advice.

just accept the first company... but just be prepared to tell them that you've chosen another path if & when the second company decides to go with you

I see a...I accepted an Internship...then passed for another company then got down sized thread in the future...

Anyways, I got help from people in my career office.

But while in the office, I got a call from another company. ZZZMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

what recession?

What's wrong with accepting one and then quitting and going to the other one if they make you an offer?

That's how the real world works, shouldn't internships work the same way?

word I just thought about this too. obviously that may somewhat burn a bridge for the future, but I'd be willing to say if its far enoughdown the road the bridge won't be burned anymore. It'll be as if the bridge was never touched. but think about the fact that companies are rescindingoffers b/c of this recession. thats like them saying "oh i want you to work here if all all variables are held constant" likewise, that is like yousaying "I want to work for you guys if all variables are held constant" well just like they get to rescinding when the variables change, you havethe right to rescind whenever the variables change

by brother has a 4.0 at a top five business school in america and couldnt get an intership....take it if they are offering you.

No, you can't just do this. Actually, this isn't affiliated with your school at all is it? Because up here, it's called co-op andthat'd be a big no-no.
Anyways, hard to give reasonable advice because this is quite a personal decision and a gamble at best.

elaborate please? now a co-op, at my school anyways, is where you are taking a semester (usually fall/spring and sometimes through summer) andworking for school credit. an internship is different b/c you aren't enrolled in school. I'm taking an internship right now and though I'm notdoing it for school credit, there are others who are and of course if they quit they will probably not be granted their credit pending investigation of theissue.

but explain to me why you cannot accept an offer of employment and then choose to work for another employer. if thats the case that is definitely news to me,because that is in some way saying you are legally bound to work for that company which i dont think is the case.

Thank you all very much for this help...

I've been researching... hopefully I get the email that I've been waiting for in the AM from a special company but goodness, I didn't expect themto get back to me soo soon about this internship. I guess, it's a blessing in disguise to be frank as we are in a recession and people are begging for anytype of jobs/positions.

Hopefully my position with the company that I will learn the most from comes through. I emailed the HR manager today (late. around closing time) so hopefullyshe gets back to me tomorrow. !!!
