Even though that example doesn't necessarily apply he's right. The term African-American is still politically incorrect despite what anyone says. When addressing other ppl who are born in America they have a country (i.e. Italy, France, England, etc.to identify with but black ppl are all lumped in to the continent of Africa. Only blacks born in Africa can come here and say they're Ethiopian-American or w/e. The term African American implies that you're born in America or a citizen of the country and that may not always be the case.
I understand what your saying. My problem is with the fact that we subdivide way too much in our culture. For a person of west Indian backgroundto take exception to being called African American is ridiculous.

Not really. People just say assume I'm Mexican!

But I'm actually Guatemalan n Mexican!

But some people still think that's a place from Mexico

I think it's the other way around. No where else do you see people referred to by a continent

I've gotten:

Pretty much any other race mixed with black
Straight up Latina
When I had my nose ring, I got Indian and Middle Eastern.

Seriously, I've heard it all...and some of the things I've heard just made me go "Really? You can't be serious." I absolutely hate whenpeople don't believe I'm mixed with black, which is probably why when people ask me about my background, I usually just say I'm black and they giveme that look like, "Well, you don't look black." I like to mess with peoples' perceptions.

I'm filipino and black and I get mistaken for Puerto Rican or black and mexican on a regular basis.

In America never. One chick thought my pops was cuban. Dude is made light skin.

But when Im in Africa outside of my country folks ask me if I am Moroccan.

But I am just good old black.
