Brown was born and raised in the small town of Tappahannock,Virginia, the son of Joyce Hawkins and Clinton Brown, The brother of Shannon Brown who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) .[sup][12][/sup][sup][13][/sup] He began dancing at the age of twoand began singing in his church choir.[sup][14][/sup][sup][15][/sup] He was influenced by the soul albums his parents owned. Originally interested in becoming a rapper, he chose to become a singer when his mother noticed his singing voice.[sup][13][/sup]

From the ages seven to thirteen, Brown was scarred by the domesticviolence his mother endured from her boyfriend.[sup][16][/sup] He claims to "hate him to thisday".[sup][17][/sup]

At the age of thirteen, Brown and his mother began looking for opportunities of a record deal.[sup][13][/sup] He was discovered by a localproduction team who visited his father's gas station while searching fornew talent.[sup][14][/sup] In 2004, Tina Davis, senior A&R executive atDef Jam Recordings at the time, was on the verge of signing Brown, butlost her job. The following day, she became his manager and landed him with a contract with Jive Records a week later.[sup][15][/sup] By early 2005, Brownbegan work for his debut album, working with the likes of Scott Storch, The Underdogs, Dre & Vidal, Bryan-Michael Cox, Bow Wow, and JermaineDupri.
