[:: J. COLE THREAD | DREAMVILLE's ROTD3 ALBUM OUT NOW!! ::]

growing up in the south the Kerney Sermon skit made me

.......hated those screaming pastors growing up......

Thing is, all Cole fans that heard all his tapes and SLS have heard 15 songs that, if positioned correctly, could match GKMC.

Those soulful jazzy beats, thoughtful lyrics, the fluidity, the cadence, that's what we've come to expect.

With his catalog BEFORE BS this should NEVER have even one skippable track, let alone 5 or 6.

I guess as a fan of Cole I have limitations on my expectations. He reminds me of that chick you mess with that will give u a decent lay, but you aren't expecting her to knock your socks off. If she does youre pleasantly surprised, but you know that in your heart a decent experience is expected. You hold on hoping that it clicks, but know that outside sources like athreesome or in coles case outside production and feedback could take it to the next level.

Cole gave us what I expected a decent album, but as I said before I expected just that and I have been a fan since the warmup not using that as a disclaimer.

No. You wrote a long review and all of it is voided because you think that Cole's rapping abilities are in Drake's lane.
For one it's my opinion lol and for two I didn't say he was in drake's lane. I said at his best he's more in the drake lane rather than kendrick lamar and on this album it sounds like he's trying to be more in the kendrick lane and it didn't work imo. Came out boring.

Watch when the albbum drops & the masses gice their opinion, y'all change your minds.

There was already ppl on here saying "my Ig & Twitter is saying it's good, so it's good" or "your review/opinion is too short or broad so you're wrong". They go listen & then all of a sudden they like it but can see why ppl don't. Sh*t doesn't even make sense

By no means is it a bad album but considering him hyping it so much & moving the date to compete w/ Yeezus. Also combining his potential, his past works & thinking he'd PROGRESS as an artist, this is a let down.

Still better than most, but I can't give it anything over a 7.5
7.5 that's exactly how I saw it too.

not sure if posted.. Power Trip sample :pimp:

still looking for the sample they used on chaining day

Think of songs/features like Looking For Trouble, Star is Born, what he did to Wale on Beautiful Bliss
sick.gif
 where he just spazzed.

Think of all the soul samples/jazzy production in Home For the Holidays, Get Away, Breakdown, the Autograph, I Get Up, Losing My Balance

Think of songs like Too Deep for the Intro, Farewell, Can I Live, Lights Please, etc.

Songs like these are why fans hoped for a classic.

Part of my disappointment I was so looking forward to the song at the end of this video. Mad it's not on the album. That sample and beat :x

Man wtf kind of analogy/metaphor/hyperbole is this

Also Coley Coles' release date was always the 18th, Ye pushed his album up to that day
But I'll purchase both and hope for the best
Done with thread until I listen and can formulate my own opinion

The lyrics were there on the album but the production/beats weren't up to par from what i expect from J.Cole. I'm going to still buy the album though.

I'm not sure on how people are saying its not at least a decent album. It flows really well IMO. I enjoyed the production.

Kinda talks about the same stuff through out the first half of the album. It's also sad that the Mo Money Interlude is the hardest song on the first half.

Power Circle and Crooked Smile are good singles that sound even better when placed in the album.

Not liking how he used the Electric Relaxation beat (with some changes) for an album song though.

 No. You wrote a long review and all of it is voided because you think that Cole's rapping abilities are in Drake's lane.

So Drake ain't rapping better than Cole right now? Really?

With his catalog BEFORE BS this should NEVER have even one skippable track, let alone 5 or 6.

Yupppp

Its wild seeing the range of opinions on this from Cole fans . Cole World to me had about 3-4 skippable tracks on it and 3-4 DOPE tracks the rest were meh in between for me. This has 2-3 DOPE songs imo and none are skippable. I too have been rocking with Cole since the Warm Up dropped, I remember seeing it on 2dopeboyz and just DLing it for the hell of it and being like :wow: I just discovered my new favorite up and coming rap artist...been a dedicated follower ever since. The singles on this album are well beyond those of the last one.

I don't think Drake is rapping better than Cole, the thing Drake has, is a realllllly good ear for production, like if you combined Cole and Drake you'd get a beast, while each are very very good on their own, they each have their drawbacks. Kendrick is an example of someone who has all of those in one (lyrical ability, storytelling, and a fantastic ear for sound and cohesion with production). But for me BS is a step in a different direction for Cole:

"It was just time for something new. I wouldn't have minded doing it again but I felt that I closed that story. "That metaphor and that storyline had really ended. Metaphorically I was just a kid working to get on this basketball team, got cut — that was The Come Up, then The Warm Up was like, alright I made the team, I'm on the team, now what? I'm not in the game, I'll just ride the end of the bench. Then Friday Night Lights was like 'come on man, you're still not gonna put me in the game? What I gotta do? Here, I'm gonna kill it in practice.Sideline Story was like, Wow, I really am starting now, and I feel like I ended that chapter when it's all said and done. Plus, this new theme is really more reflective of where I'm at and where I've been at for the past two years, so it was just perfect to move on."[

That's him explaining the process behind this album a bit, its like he's "made it" and he has a whole new slew of stories to tell...Viluminati, Mo Money (I reallllllly wish this song was like 3mins dude was going in on here :x), Trouble, Power Trip, Rich N____, Crooked Smile, even the skits fit in with an overall theme now that I've gone through this like 4 times. He hasn't lost any of his lyrical or storytelling ability, it may not as showcased here like say on Lights Please or Lost Ones but its definitely still there. I too think he should venture out more for different producers on his 3rd album but his production on here is far from boring, it fits with the tone of the album more...the subject matter is just much more subdued with some exceptions.

He definitely has the ability to combine the dark sound that bumps and lyricism (See Miss America) it's just a more simplistic (not worse) production for the most part on here. I think he's also suffering in some people's minds bc he really did drop some EXCELLENT mixtape material for free :smokin I just think this is equally as good, in a different way

Runaway is currently my favorite track after a couple listens.

I sort of wanted to hear T-Boz's voice more on Crooked Smile, but definitely a nice track nonetheless.

Nothing I want to skip, although I'm not too fond of Ain't that Some ****.

Count me in with the group that's surprised at the reception in here. I don't think this is as accessible to someone who isn't already a Cole fan, like his other material may be, but I thought it was very good, and trumped his first effort. Production was solid.

This may be an album that will grow on people over time.

Can't lie I was a little dissappointed with everyone's opinions on the album in this thread.

But I personally love this album. Didn't even skip a song. Sideline story had skips (cole word, mr nice watch, workout)

Buying regardless cause Im a huge supporter of Cole

Solid album but it didnt have that wow factor that Cole World had. Cole World flowed so nice and felt like you were listening to a story.

First half of BS put me to sleep but it picked up in the second half. Honestly, Crooked Smile might be my favorite this far.

I was hoping this album would have a good workout song (Rise and Shine/God's Gift) but it doesn't

My god!!! that sample/beat at the end :wow:
Had me looking forward for something that's not even there :frown:

Man I was let down at first listen but after listening some more I like the album. It sill isn't higher than 8-8.5 cause of some flaws. I am still let down that he couldn't bring us a classic like FNL or warmup but hopefully next album.

Land of snakes, power trip, mo money, runaway, rich N's, forbidden fruit, chaining day, crooked smiles, let down Nas are all super dope to me and what you expect from cole, all those songs have a message on there.

Flaws are the skits, the interlude, and the beat on the intro, (he was spitting but for intro he needed a more hitting beat) He also should of made mo money a full song.

He should of put Kenny Lofton and Cousins on the album smh
